    Ecosmob Announce Customized Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Solution

    Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations partners and users begin One Version era

    Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations has entered the so-called One Version era, in which  customers will say goodbye to traditional ERP upgrades and apply an ongoing and mandatory series of smaller updates to their systems on a monthly to quarterly basis.

    At the D365FO User Group & AX User Group Summit Europe this week, Microsoft made the case for the transition, hoping to convince current Finance and Operations (D365FO ) customers that the new approach will benefit them in the long-run, and that Dynamics AX customers that upgrade will never have to endure another upgrade project in the future.

    The transition to One Version comes at a time when D365FO is growing at a "far higher pace" than the overall Dynamics 365 product line's 51% revenue growth rate according to general manager for Dynamics 365 Muhammad Alam, who spoke at the event. He said he was eager to share more details on the good news around D365FO but was restricted from sharing specific figures. But based on July 2018 data that put the number of D365FO customers in production at more than six hundred, a higher growth rate indicates that the number of live customers could now be above one thousand, an estimate that one Microsoft source believed was accurate.

    Some other data Microsoft shared about the growing D365FO customer base:

  • Functional usage in D365FO production environments

  • Finance: 98 percent

  • Warehouse management: 63 percent
  • Project accounting: 16 percent
  • Alam added that he expects migrations from AX to start ramping up in 2019 due to improved upgrade and migration tools and the quickly approaching end of life of various versions of AX.

    The current model, which is in place as of the 8.1.x versions of D365FO and carries forward into the 10.0.x version that launches in April, calls for customers to apply at least one update every three months, meaning a customer can skip two monthly updates but then must deploy the next one. For each update the customer can specify the week, day (Saturday or Sunday for most, but some industries like retail are opting for mid-week), and the time.

    "We have been doing thousands of updates since last fall and doing it at scale and they are ready to do it for all customers with success," said Alam, "and it really begins starting their April update."

    With so many live customers on D365FO before the One Version era began, Microsoft has found itself supporting up to 48 permutations of the service, between four platform versions and 12 updates. To ensure backward compatibility, Alam said Microsoft is now doing six times the validation on each update, deploying known customer configurations, including with custom extensions and ISV solutions. Their validation of each update also includes 12 weeks of "bake time" before a release. Furthermore, most customers will be applying an update weeks after it has gone through the early adopter program in production environments. For companies choosing the latest possible update window, as much as seven weeks of production usage of the update will have already been done by other customers.

    Another validation step for new updates will be the Release Validation Program, which brings customer-specific projects into an environment where they can be validated ahead of a release. Test results are seen by Microsoft and any defects are shared with the customer. Microsoft group program manager Shelly Bakke explained to partners at the conference that the program requires sharing code and data with a small team at Microsoft. The program is also most appropriate for customer environments where there is a relatively stable codebase, as opposed to ongoing updates to extensions or add-ons.

    Customer responsibilities and response

    Customers at User Group Summit Europe this week listened intently to guidance on updates delivered by Microsoft MVP Andre Arnaud de Calavon as he explained the One Version approach. He told MSDW that users did not raise significant concerns or questions in response to his guidance.

    "I was expecting some nasty question, but there was nothing," he said.

    Arnaud de Calavon say he suspects that while some customers now have a good understanding, others still do not, both in terms of Microsoft's policies and the responsibilities they will put on the customer as opposed to the partner.

    "If you look at DevOps and split it, there is the development part and the operations part. The partner can do the development part and then hand it over. The customer has to do verification, the acceptance tests, and when you have done that then you will decide when and if you are going to apply [updates] in production."

    Arnaud de Calavon's message to AX and D365FO users was to prepare to own the operations of their own systems, especially as it relates to evaluating, preparing for, and deploying updates on a monthly or at least quarterly basis.

    He noted that historically customers have been unwilling to make frequent updates when they knew a system was working well, but One Version forces them to do just that. In theory, that risk from more frequent updates should be mitigated by two factors. First, early adopters will be getting these updates ahead of the majority of customers, and those teams should detect and report problems a month or more in advance of more conservative customers. Second, partners will be seeing the same update across all customers, meaning they should be able to predict the most common issues in any given month or quarter across all their D365FO clients.

    Predicting customer response – and the odds of future policy changes

    Microsoft is also actively investigating customer needs, and partners could have a voice still. An outside consulting firm has been engaged to report back to Microsoft on what customers say they need in various scenarios and industries (for example, FDA-regulated manufacturers). Microsoft has already heard feedback from the community, too.

    For example, early D365FO customers, that adopted the product when it was still very much an IaaS architecture tend to find the adjustment more challenging, Bakke noted. And Microsoft knows customers want more tools to support updates. The regression testing suite, RSAT, doesn't touch key areas including POS and reporting.

    Bakke also reminded partners that the continuous update cadence begins during an implementation project, not just when a customer goes live. Is that going to help customers to build that mindset in during the implementation? In the coming months, many organizations on both sides of the implementation process may shift their approaches.
