Lotus takes Notes into workplace | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

IBM Corp. intends to forge enhanced bonds between its messaging and collaboration tools with up-to-date versions of Lotus Notes and Domino, which have been launched last month at the Lotusphere person conference in Orlando, Fla.

Marking the 20th anniversary of Lotus Notes, Armonk, N.Y.-primarily based IBM used the annual Lotusphere experience to officially launch the third beta for Notes and Domino 7, with the last product slated to ship this summer time. Notes and Domino 7 presents tighter integration with IBM’s DB2 regularly occurring Database and the Eclipse and Java-based mostly IBM office platform, in response to IBM. Notes and Domino 7 can support eighty per cent extra clients, IBM said.

It additionally uses 25 per cent less processing vigor, the company stated. The new edition of Notes and Domino features equipment to immediately convert purposes into XML-based web capabilities.

IBM also unveiled Domino clothier, a visible, script-oriented programming tool that creates Notes and web-based mostly purposes, and new Domino domain monitoring tools to help organisations consolidate statistics on fewer Domino servers.

all through the outlet keynote tackle, Ambuj Goyal, universal supervisor of workplace, portal and collaborative utility (Lotus software) at IBM, observed the bulletins had been designed to put an end to the “two-lane highway” method and supply tighter integration between Notes and IBM’s two-year-historic workplace messaging and collaboration platform.

in the past, Lotus Notes and Domino clients had been worried about the company’s product road map, above all as IBM had concentrated more on J2EE and WebSphere collaboration applied sciences. Notes/Domino and place of work are now on the identical path, Goyal pointed out. Future versions of Notes will fall beneath the Java-primarily based IBM workplace platform umbrella, he delivered.

Joanne Clerk, country wide income supervisor, Lotus utility for IBM Canada in Markham, Ont., talked about IBM continues to be dedicated to end users employing Lotus Notes and Domino applied sciences.

Daren Collins, IT infrastructure manager for TransAlta Corp., a Calgary-primarily based power generation enterprise, attended Lotusphere to get a clearer figuring out of the Lotus/Domino road map. TransAlta these days prolonged its Lotus Notes and neighborhood calendars to the internet and built-in the utility with the SAP AG’s commercial enterprise Portal product. TranAlta has been a heavy Lotus user considering that 1996, Collins talked about, including that IBM outlined sufficiently the stage of help that Lotus/Domino will get hold of and where the technologies will healthy into the IBM workplace framework.

HCL Acquires selected IBM utility businesses: Lotus Notes, Domino, Tivoli | killexams.com Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

HCL technologies has acquired selected IBM application organizations — including some basic Lotus Notes, Domino and Tivoli products — for $1.eight billion.

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty

The deal highlights IBM CEO Ginni Rometty’s effort to improve the business’s salary combine — peculiarly because the company prepares to digest pink Hat for more than $34 billion.

still, the HCL deal also highlights IBM’s failure to navigate the shift from customer-server to SaaS enterprise models on diverse products in multiple market segments.

The IBM software asset income to HCL encompass:

  • Appscan for relaxed software building,
  • BigFix for relaxed device administration,
  • Unica (on-premise) for marketing automation,
  • Commerce (on-premise) for omni-channel eCommerce,
  • Portal (on-premise) for digital journey,
  • Notes & Domino for email and low-code fast software development, and
  • Connections for workstream collaboration.
  • HCL and IBM have an ongoing IP Partnership for five of these items, both organizations talked about.

IBM software heritage: Hits and Misses

IBM bought Lotus for $three.52 billion in 1995 and Tivoli for $743 million in 1996. Lotus Notes and Domino ranked among the desirable client-server groupware and e mail systems within the Nineteen Nineties — competing head-on towards Microsoft trade. but while Microsoft made a a hit transition to office 365 in the cloud, Notes and Domino mostly ignored the cloud era.

Tivoli, meanwhile, ranked among the large 4 IT administration utility providers — competing head-on in opposition t CA applied sciences, BMC and HP within the Nineteen Nineties and early 2000s. every of those companies stumbled a little as international 2000 agencies pursued simplified IT management platforms in contemporary years — opening the door for ServiceNow to disrupt predominant parts of the market.

    IBM enterprise Evolution

Even because it sheds some application property, IBM is doubling down on the software market in different areas. The enterprise’s pending crimson Hat buyout, valued at around $34 billion, probably gives IBM a robust software footprint in on-premises statistics facilities and third-birthday celebration clouds.

Some media insurance suggests that the IBM-red Hat combo will compete head-on against Amazon net services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. but that isn’t completely correct. red Hat does not have a big IaaS or SaaS enterprise. quite, pink Hat’s utility customarily runs on third-birthday party public clouds — together with AWS, Azure and positively IBM Cloud. It’s additionally largely deployed on-premises, which potential IBM could benefit a robust hybrid cloud story.

nonetheless, the IBM-purple Hat deal also highlight’s IBM’s urgent need to shake up its personal company as more and more clients shift workloads to AWS, Azure and to a degree Google Cloud Platform.

Lotus on IBM i: A Chat with Some Users | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

In the highly amplified world of information technology, the chatter about what’s next almost always drowns out the talk about what the majority of companies are capable of doing to help their businesses today. Innovation makes the news, but in the real world innovation isn’t the extreme sport that it’s often portrayed. Real innovation is results oriented. If you want to know the reality of IT departments running Lotus software on the IBM i platform, talk with some average companies.

There’s a great deal of innovation going on if you are willing to put innovation in perspective with where a given company has been and where it is going. Being evolutionary has always been more popular than being revolutionary. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, there are many good reasons for it. Keep in mind that in some instances, the pace of evolution is quite brisk. Other times, it’s excruciatingly slow.

Whatever your preconceived notions are about companies that run Lotus Domino on the IBM i platform, let these four examples either reinforce your thinking or open your eyes to what life is like in this environment.

Gabriele Spaszewski — Dachser GmbH & Co. KG

Dachser is one of Europe’s leading logistics companies. For years it has run its business on IBM AS/400s, iSeries, System i, and now Power Systems with IBM i. And for as long as there has been Lotus Notes and Domino, Dachser has depended on that combination of servers and software to handle workflow and a substantial load of business communications with deep integration to its home-grown transport management software. It’s had opportunities to migrate from these systems, but has chosen not to.

There’s a strong connection between the IBM i platform and Lotus software users, but it’s a difficult one to assign any numbers. I know for a fact it’s hard to find an IBMer who will quantify this connection. That’s just the way it goes in the IBM i server business these days. But coming out of the annual Lotusphere conference in Orlando, Florida, three weeks ago, with its emphasis on Lotus as the leading edge of social business, I looked for some customers who would tell me what they were up to.

Dachser has a centralized Lotus environment on IBM i. It also has an experienced, well-educated staff to make it work well and the willingness to innovate.

The main mail server, a Power6-based Power 570, hosts 11,300 registered users in 240 branches and includes mail files in 11 languages. That equates to approximately 400,000 emails routed per day with an average mail delivery time of less than 1 second.

Those 11,000-plus users are in the processing of moving from Lotus Notes 7.0.1 on Citrix Presentation Server 4 to Notes 8.5.1 on XenApp 5. And soon after, there’s a plan to upgrade the servers to 8.5.2. The Notes database houses more than 200 document libraries and more than 100 in-house developed Lotus Notes applications that range from a simple dictionary to a complex CRM system that is accessed by close to 1,000 employees each day.

Three additional IBM i servers are set up for specific duties: one for Lotus Sametime integrated chat, one for a third-party content management system, and one for a portion of the CRM system.

Apart from the in-house developed apps, third-party products are used for group calendaring, fax software, and data transfer and synchronization between Lotus Domino and supported external systems.

The only pieces that don’t run on IBM i are the servers accessed by BlackBerry mobile users, which IBM did not design to run on IBM i.

“We are lucky that they have a lot of iSeries know-how in their company,” says Gabriele Spaszewski, team leader of Lotus Notes administration at Dachser in an email from Lotusphere. “They really know their job and they help us tailoring the OS so that it fits their needs. This is absolutely necessary if you plan to run Domino on iSeries, because unfortunately there aren’t a lot of people around knowing how to handle Domino on iSeries–you have a hard time finding some experts.”

    Bob Laing — Independent Contractor

As an independent contractor in western New York, Bob Laing works with more than a dozen IBM i shops that run Domino and a few that run Domino on Windows. His view is a microcosm of the Domino on IBM i landscape. His clients are primarily manufacturers, but with a couple of insurance companies also in the mix. Most have an IBM i history that includes the iSeries, the AS/400, and the System/36 and System/38 eras.

The IT shops Laing supports vary in size from 10 users up to 500 users. He is the IT staff at small shops, while the larger companies have IT staffs in the range of 15 to 20 people, where his Domino expertise and IBM software/hardware skills (hardware installations, OS upgrades, PTF installations, and performance tuning) supplements the full-time personnel.

Most of his customers are current on OS and software upgrades, but are operating at a fairly basic feature/function level with little custom tweaking and performance tuning. They’ve been running this way for years, preferring the stability and the manageability that Domino on IBM i offers to the hoopla of social business and cloud computing, which are little more than curiosities at this point.

“I just went through a project where three Windows servers were consolidated to an existing iSeries,” Laing says. “The only required tuning involved the overnight backups. Domino runs great on iSeries and the box manages the memory it uses, the disk space it uses, and it can be tweaked–but I have never seen that done locally. I’ve often seen shops consolidating from multiple iSeries to one iSeries because you no longer need multiple machines to get the needed level of performance.”

“Leveraging the social aspects of the Lotus software line is not a high priority. Most shops are doing traditional email and traditional client-based applications. I’d say less than 25 percent of the shops are just now getting into Web-enabling their 10-to-15-year-old Notes applications.”

In his slice of the customer base, he sees a handful using HA solutions and Domino clustering and several are looking into making use of mobile applications. The obstacle, on more than one occasion, has been mobile apps required to run on Windows servers. These are shops that are leery of bringing in more Windows servers. The preferred workaround, for now, is using mail forwarding to get information to smartphones.

There is a parallel to traditional email and traditional client-based applications. It is traditional skills.

“I see a skills vacuum for people who possess both legacy skills and modern skills,” Laing says. “There are a lot of RPG programmers with skills that should be updated, but for various reasons they aren’t going to learn modern techniques. The same can be said for a lot of Domino developers. They have been doing the same thing for 10 years, and as technology evolves, they don’t evolve as well.”

Regardless, Laing says, “In my neck of the woods there is a healthy install of Domino on iSeries. I don’t anticipate it changing by more shops migrating to the iSeries or migrating away from the iSeries.”

Rick Davis — Frisbie Memorial Hospital

In March 2001, a single Domino R5 server was deployed at this Rochester, New Hampshire, hospital. There were 51 registered users. By the time Rick Davis joined the IT staff in 2008, the user list had expanded to approximately 500, with about 350 of those using the Notes client and 150 using the browser-based iNotes. The number of users continued to grow, and today there are 258 iNotes users and 383 using the Notes client. The server is running Domino 8.5.1 and there’s an upgrade to 8.5.1 in progress for the clients. There are plans to roll out Lotus Traveler (for mobile apps) in the near future and the use of Sametime (instant messaging, voice over IP, and audio-video conferencing) is in the “under consideration” phase.

Davis is a one-man IT staff. He handles administration duties and some development chores. On some platforms it would be ridiculous to think it could be a one-person job. Davis does get some assistance.

He says contracting with a Domino hosting service has been a great help to the hospital, which was searching for a way to securely deliver information to providers “outside the network.” The hosting service was the key to secure information replication.

At the same time, the hospital has increased the number of Notes applications that electronically track and document many processes that were previously paper-based. Those applications include coverage calendars, variance reporting, HIPAA violation tracking, key and badge requests, surveys, change requests, network management and many more. Davis points out that the managers now have accurate data for planning and evaluation purposes.

A high availability system is also under way. It includes a second iSeries box and a second Domino server clustered with the existing production server. Fail over testing has been scheduled so upgrades of the OS, processors, and memory in the current production server can be accomplished while maintaining business continuity.

The only problem area that Davis revealed was an ongoing issue with the client upgrade process.

“Over the years there has been no defined install process. Or perhaps there was, but it changed every six weeks,” he says. “We’re finding components in folders and places they never anticipated. This has required a bit more ‘hands-on’ than they would have liked.”

Davis says the bond that connects Domino and the IBM i is very strong, but he stops short of saying the two will remain forever linked.

“Both Domino and most of the non-Domino medical applications run on the iSeries,” Davis says. “As they continue to grow and stress the capacity of the iSeries, the option to move Domino to another platform will always be under consideration. But for the foreseeable future, Domino will remain on the iSeries and the iSeries will remain the production server platform.”

    Eric A. Jewett — McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital

In most cases where IBM i is the operating system of choice for Domino, core business applications are running on that platform. It began that way at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio, but the facility is in the process of migrating its main hospital system to Linux. In the short term, that will have no impact on a decision to move Domino off the IBM i platform.

Because the hospital makes use of a multi-partitioned box, it has realized many advantages–specifically, separate partitions for email, WebSphere Portal, and a test environment for both WebSphere and Domino.

“We went from two Windows servers to a multiple LPAR for Domino,” Jewett says. “And at that same time, they moved to Domino 6.5.”

That was a bit of a rough road–the Domino upgrades of that era were notoriously ugly–and it required some help from a business partner to smooth the transition. But as Jewett says, “Once they got through that, they never looked back. They now have Sametime and Quikr running on the iSeries, and another application server as well. The only Intel Domino server in this mix is for BlackBerry (only runs on Windows). Given the choice, they probably would be running that on iSeries, too.”

In the LPAR environment, Jewett can run multiple releases of Domino, which is handy for testing new applications. The test environments include pretty much everything that’s in the production environment. And it allows regression testing while making Domino upgrades.

“Currently they have two different Domino releases,” Jewett says. But there have been times–because of add-in packages and questions of compatibility–we’ve had three releases running at one time.”

The hospital is up to date with Domino 8.5.2 for everything that’s capable of running on it.

The majority of users–the line of business staffers–have access to browser-based applications. Jewett says, “A lot of newer and more sophisticated apps have been built for browsers, but the supervisory staff still relies primarily on applications running on the Notes client especially when accessing older departmental databases. Some composites application development is also in the mix.

Jewett describes his job as being mostly focused on the admin side of things. His affinity for the platform is clear.

“The fact that Domino on the i has been tremendously stable has been a great benefit. Once it is up and running, it stays running and they have very few issues,” he says. Although he claims his development skills are a bit stale, he wants to tackle the modernization of some of the client-based apps.

“It’s not been a high priority to this point because of limited time,” is the familiar refrain Jewett evokes. “The top of the priority list is generally taking care of things that are broken as is the case when dealing with older applications. There are things that we’d like to move over to the browser and take advantage of new features. The time to work on those projects isn’t there right now.”

The lease on the hospital’s current iSeries will soon expire. Jewett says there’s no consideration given to leaving the platform.

“We will be scaling down their hardware buy because there’s a terabyte of disk space or more that is tied up in the hospital system, which is no longer needed on the i. But the platform has been very stable and the licensing model is not conducive to switching to individual Linux or Windows servers. Besides, managing that workload [on the Linux or Windows side] would not be something that I could add to my duties.”

Working with the OSGi Console | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

This chapter is from the book 

Before delving into the inner workings of the OSGi console, it is best to briefly explain OSGi. OSGi stands for Open Services Gateway initiative framework. This framework allows software to be written and executed as independent components. In OSGi-speak, these components are referred to as bundles. OSGi is used in a wide range of applications, from client programs such as Eclipse and IBM Lotus Notes, to mobile phones, to server applications such as IBM Lotus Domino. As a result of their modular nature, OSGi bundles can be started, stopped, and debugged on an individual basis, without the need for stopping or restarting the entire platform. Both the Domino server and the Notes client use Eclipse’s implementation of OSGi (Equinox) as their OSGi runtime platform.

OSGi was added to the Domino platform in release 8.5.2. As a result, in Domino 8.5.2, the XPages runtime was repackaged to run as OSGi bundles (instead of just a regular collection of Java JARS), also referred to as Eclipse plug-ins.

The OSGi console allows for the input of commands that the OSGi platform then performs. The platform posts the results of such commands back to the console. The OSGi platform itself has a whole host of commands that can simplify the troubleshooting of problems. The OSGi console can assist developers in developing XPages controls and applications, as well as assisting support personnel in diagnosing runtime issues. Developers who extend the XPages runtime by creating libraries will find the OSGi console commands to be a particularly powerful tool in analyzing problems. The OSGi console is of particular use when the developer/administrator needs to know whether individual plug-ins (or sets of plug-ins) are loading correctly or which version of a plug-in is in use.

As mentioned earlier, OSGi is embedded within both the Notes client and the Domino server. Depending on where your XPages application is running (whether on the client or the server), your method of accessing the OSGi console will vary. They start by explaining how to access the OSGi console on the Domino server.

OSGi is embedded within the HTTP task on the Domino server, as a result, the OSGi console is started automatically whenever the HTTP task is started. OSGi console commands are routed to the OSGi console via the HTTP task. That is, when entering an OSGi console command on the Domino server, the user must tell the HTTP task to route the specified command to the OSGi console—for example:

    tell http osgi <<command>>

Here, <<command>> is the name of the OSGi console command. Any OSGi command can be executed using the preceding syntax.

When it comes to OSGi commands, every developer and administrator should know several rudimentary commands. These commands can be your “go to” commands when problems arise—say, when you suspect bundle loading might be a factor. Even when you do not think that bundle loading is the problem, it is often best to first confirm that the bundle is actually loaded before proceeding with other debugging techniques.

Table 3.2 lists some of the more commonly used OSGi commands that are available to use for diagnosing plug-in issues on the Domino server (and also the Notes client). In Table 3.2, bundle-symbolic-name is referenced extensively. This is the name by which the OSGi platform references bundles. bundle-symbolic-name correlates directly to the Bundle-SymbolicName manifest header, often referred to as the plug-in name.

    Table 3.2. OSGi Console Commands

    Command Syntax

    Description

    tell http osgi diag <bundle-symbolic-name>

Diagnoses the status of the bundle whose name is provided. Determines whether the bundle is resolved and, if not, states why the bundle is not resolved.

    tell http osgi ss <bundle-symbolic-name>

Lists the status of all bundles in the system. Optionally, a symbolic name or a symbolic name prefix can be provided to obtain the status of a particular bundle or a subset of bundles.

    tell http osgi start <bundle-symbolic-name>

Starts the bundle with the specified symbolic name.

    tell http osgi stop <bundle-symbolic-name>

Stops the bundle with the specified symbolic name.

    tell http osgi b <bundle-symbolic-name>

Prints metadata relating to the specified bundle.

    tell http osgi headers <bundle-symbolic-name>

Lists the OSGi headers for the specified bundle.

    tell http osgi help

Lists all the OSGi command available on the server, along with some text describing each command.

All the commands listed in Table 3.2 can be entered via the Domino server console, with the results of such commands being printed back to the console, as illustrated in Figure 3.4.

    Figure 3.4

Figure 3.4. Running an OSGi command on the Domino Server Console

All the commands referenced in Table 3.2 can alternatively take the bundle id as a parameter (instead of the bundle-symbolic-name). The bundle id is a numeric ID that the OSGi runtime assigns to the bundle during platform initialization. The ID might vary from instance to instance of the platform, but users might find it easier to input than having to enter the entire bundle symbolic name. Examples of how to determine and use the bundle id are given later in this chapter.

Rarely does a single OSGi console command answer all the questions on why a plug-in is not loading or operating as expected. The following sections explain in greater detail how you can use each of these commands and the results you can expect to see from executing such commands.

    diag <bundle-symbolic-name>

This is one of the most valuable commands in your arsenal and will likely be the one you’ll use most frequently when diagnosing issues. You can use this command to determine whether a bundle is resolved within the OSGi platform. The status returned by this command will be one of the following:

  • No unresolved constraints
  • Unresolved constraint
  • If No unresolved constraints is the returned status, it suggests that the system has recognized the bundle and that all dependencies of the bundle are satisfied. When an Unresolved constraint status is returned, it suggests that one or more bundles or packages that the bundle requires are missing or cannot be loaded. It is worth noting here that a bundle might still fail to start even though the OSGi console reports that the bundle has been resolved. If a bundle fails to start and is resolved, some code in the bundle’s activator likely is failing (throwing an exception).

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core

Listing 3.8 shows the typical output of running the diag command against the com.ibm.xsp.core plug-in.

Listing 3.8. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Successful Case > tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM initial@reference:file:../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp. core_8.5.3.20110629-1645/[119] 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM No unresolved constraints.

In this case, the diag command reports that there were No unresolved constraints against the entered bundle symbolic name—in other words, the system recognizes the given bundle. Upon closer examination, the user can obtain further information about the bundle in question. It can determine where the bundle being used by the platform is installed, and the platform-assigned bundle id can also be obtained.

From reading the console output, the user can see that the bundle is installed to ../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.core_8.5.3.20110629-1645. The location specified is relative to the osgi/rcp/eclipse directory, which is a child of the Domino program directory. In this case, the console output indicates that the plug-in is installed at: <domino program directory>/osgi/shared/eclipse/plugins.

Finally, the output states the platform-assigned bundle id for the specified bundle. 119 is the id assigned to this bundle in this example. As stated previously, the OSGi commands listed here can use the bundle id interchangeably. In this example, executing the following command has identical output to that in Listing 3.8.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi diag 119

Listing 3.9 shows sample output of running the diag command in an unsuccessful scenario.

Listing 3.9. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Error Case > tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM update@../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com. ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_8.5.3.201108111413.jar [116] 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Direct constraints which are unresolved: 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0.

In Listing 3.9, you can see that the OSGi platform reports that the bundle in question is not resolved as a result of a missing dependency. They can see from the console output that the OSGi platform has actually found the bundle that they are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt), but as one of the bundles that com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt depends on is not resolved, the com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt bundle does not get resolved itself. Looking a little more closely at the console output, they can determine the following:

The bundle com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt is installed at ../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_8.5.3.201108111413.jar. They now know that this path is relative to the <domino program directory>/osgi/rcp/eclipse directory. Hence, they can deduce that com.ibm.extlib.sbt is installed at the <domino program directory>/data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/ directory.

The OSGi platform–assigned bundle id for this bundle is 116.

One other tidbit of information can be extracted from the console output, in this case. The final line of the output tells us that the host is missing:

    Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0

This tells us that the bundle they are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt) is, in fact, a plug-in fragment, and the unresolved constraint (com.ibm.xsp.extlib) is the host plug-in.

ss, ss <bundle-symbolic-name>, or ss <bundle-name-prefix>

Similar to the diag command, this command quickly determines the status of a particular bundle—or all the bundles installed in the platform. Users can optionally specify a bundle name or a bundle name prefix to get the status of specific bundles. The returned status shows the bundle id, state, and bundle name of all bundles. In many situations, this command is just as useful as the diag command because it also reports the status of a bundle. This command does not tell the user why a particular bundle is not loading, but it does tell the user the state of a bundle.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi ss

Listing 3.10 shows the result of running the ss command without any parameters.

    Listing 3.10. Result of Running the ss Command Without Any Bundle Name Parameter > tell http osgi ss 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM Framework is launched. 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM id State Bundle 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 0 ACTIVE org.eclipse. osgi_3.4.3.R34x_v20081215-1030-RCP20110624-1648 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM Fragments=57, 76, 88, 89, 235 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 1 RESOLVED org.eclipse.equinox. event_1.1.0.v20080225 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM Fragments=32 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 2 RESOLVED com.ibm.pvc.jndi.provider. java.nl_6.2.3.20110625-0109 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM Master=71 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 3 RESOLVED com.ibm.eclipse.equinox. preferences.nl_6.2.3.20110624-1648 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM Master=85 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 4 <<LAZY>> com.ibm.icu. base_3.8.1.v20080530 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 5 RESOLVED com.ibm.pvc.servlet. jsp_2.1.0.20110625-0109 09/09/2011 01:46:07 PM 6 RESOLVED org.apache.commons. logging_1.0.4.20110625-0109

Listing 3.10 lists a subset of the information that displays when this command is run in a normal server environment. However, the listing does show all the information needed to understand the output of the command.

The command outputs several important pieces of information about each bundle:

  • Bundle-id—for example, 2, which is the OSGi platform–assigned ID of the bundle.
  • Bundle state—for example, RESOLVED, which is the state of the bundle within the OSGi platform. A bundle can have one of seven states. Table 3.3 explains all of these.
  • Bundle name—for example com.ibm.eclipse.equinox.preferences.nl_6.2.3.20110624-1648, which is the bundle symbolic name with its version information appended to the name.
  • Master or Fragments—for example, Master=71. This data tells whether the bundle in question is a plug-in or a fragment. If the bundle specifies neither Master nor Fragments, it is automatically implied that the bundle is a plug-in bundle. The digits corresponding to the fragments or plug-ins are the OSGi platform–assigned bundle ids of the fragments or the master plug-in of the bundle in question.
  • Sample usage:

    tell http osgi ss com.ibm.xsp.extlib

Listing 3.11 shows the result of running the ss command with a bundle prefix specified.

Similar to Listing 3.10, Listing 3.11 shows the results of executing the ss command, only this time the command is passed a bundle symbolic name as a parameter. The ss command finds all bundles on the system that either start with the parameter or have a bundle symbolic name that is the same as the parameter. Listing 3.11 lists all the bundles, along with their bundle id and state.

Table 3.3 lists all the possible states of an OSGi bundle.

    Table 3.3. OSGi Bundle States

    State

    Description

    UNINSTALLED

The bundle is uninstalled and is unusable.

    INSTALLED

The bundle has been installed, but the platform has not yet resolved it.

    RESOLVED

The bundle has been resolved and is in a position to be started.Note that it is still possible for the bundle to fail to start, even though it has been resolved by the environment.

    <<LAZY>>

Similar to RESOLVED, the platform has resolved the bundle and is in a position to be started. The bundle is not yet ACTIVE because it has been configured (via its bundle manifest) to be initialized lazily–that is, only when another ACTIVE bundle references the bundle will it be activated.

    STARTING

The bundle is in the process of starting. Either another bundle has specifically caused the bundle to start (by referring to a class within the bundle) or the user has manually started the bundle via the console. Rarely is a bundle in this state because it is transient.

    STOPPING

The bundle is in the process of shutting down. Similar to STARTING, a bundle rarely is in this state.

    ACTIVE

The bundle is running within the OSGi platform.

Developers and administrators should be aware that, on the Domino server, the state of a bundle is not persisted from one session to the next—that is, after the HTTP task is restarted, any bundles that were started manually in the previous session must be started again. Luckily, the ss command has an argument for filtering all bundles in a given state. The ss command can filter the bundles based on their state, by appending -s [state] to the command syntax.

    Sample usage:

tell http osgi ss -s active

Figure 3.5 shows the output of running the ss command with the -s active argument.

    Figure 3.5

Figure 3.5. Result of running the ss command in the Domino server console

    start <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command requests that the platform manually start the specified bundle. Calling this command does not guarantee that the specified bundle will be started. An exception can still occur during bundle initialization that would cause the bundle initialization to fail. Performing an ss command after the start command reports the status of the bundle. This command is helpful when a new bundle has been installed on the server, but the administrator or developer is not in a position to restart the HTTP task to start the new bundle.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi start com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

Figure 3.6 shows that, by running a combination of the ss and start commands, a bundle can be started and its state can be verified.

    Figure 3.6

Figure 3.6. Result of running the start and ss commands in the console

    stop <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command tells the platform to stop the specified bundle. Users should be careful when calling this on a production environment. In some cases, it might not be possible for the platform to stop the bundle. If this is the case, the reason will be printed to the console.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi stop com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

Figure 3.7 shows how running a combination of the ss and stop command stops a bundle and verifies its state.

    Figure 3.7

Figure 3.7. Result of running the start and ss commands in the console

    b <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command prints all metadata relating to the specified bundle. The metadata includes imported packages, required bundles, exported packages, bundle location, and so on. This command is useful when the developer needs to quickly verify that the bundle loaded by the platform has the meta information that the developer believes it has.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi b com.ibm.xsp.extlib

Listing 3.12 shows a subset of the output from running the b command against a specified bundle.

Listing 3.12. This command causes the OSGi header information for the specified bundle to be printed to the console. This command is convenient for checking information such as the packages that a specific bundle exports or the bundles that the specified bundle depends upon. All the information stored in the bundle’s manifest.mf file is printed to the console.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi headers com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

IBM finalizing free Symphony office suite for Macs | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Taking aim at the Microsoft Office franchise on the Macintosh, IBM announced Tuesday that its free Lotus Symphony suite of personal productivity applications will come out of beta for the Apple Inc. hardware platform later this month.

Symphony, which was introduced by IBM in September 2007, is already available for Windows and Linux PCs. Now it will compete for Macintosh business with Microsoft Corp.'s market-leading Office for Mac software as well as fellow upstarts such as Apple's own iWork suite and OpenOffice.org, with which Symphony shares a common technical heritage.

[ See how Symphony, Google Docs, and Zoho match up against Office in InfoWorld's Test Center review | Discover the top-rated IT products as rated by the InfoWorld Test Center. ]

Released in October, OpenOffice.org 3.0 is the first version of the open source software that can run natively on Mac OS X; prior releases required the use of the X11 Unix windowing environment. Symphony is based on an older version of OpenOffice.org, although the code has been heavily modified by IBM.

The Symphony applications can be downloaded free of charge. Users can buy relatively inexpensive support contracts under a program launched last June by IBM, which is making the Mac announcement in conjunction with the annual Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco.

In addition to the various desktop application offerings, Mac users also can turn to Web-based office suites, such as Google Docs and, if Macworld-related rumors are correct, an upcoming cloud version of iWork.

IBM also released Version 8.5 of its Lotus Notes collaboration software for the Mac. Similar to Notes 8 for Windows and Linux, Notes 8.5 for the Mac sports a revamped user interface that offers simplified access to multiple features at the same time. For instance, from within the Notes interface, end-users can see who is online among their contacts in the companion Lotus Sametime instant messaging and VoIP software and then quickly begin Sametime conversations, IBM said.

Notes 8.5 also offers integration to public Web calendars hosted by Google Inc. or Yahoo Inc., according to IBM. And it stores e-mail attachments on Lotus Domino servers, thereby using up to 40 percent less space than previously. The upgrade works only on Macs that are running Mac OS X 10.5, the latest version of Apple's operating system -- more popularly known as Leopard.

In addition, IBM released a Version 8.5 update for its Web-based iNotes application, which lets Notes users access their e-mail via the iPhone's Safari browser. The vendor launched iNotes in September.
