  • Have a look on the plunkr for a concept of what we'll do.

    what will I be taught?

i tried to keep the use case small-ish so that it will focus on the WCM materials as follows:

    news

IBM Buffs office and WebSphere Portal
  • via Stuart J. Johnston
  • November 11, 2004
  • IBM this week introduced new and up to date products in its office family unit of collaboration products, including 19 position-primarily based built-in functions for medium and small enterprise customers. The business additionally observed it will supply ad hoc web conferencing as a carrier for valued clientele beginning in December.

The options give customizable company capabilities for particular industries or categories of company tasks and operations – all constructed the usage of IBM office products and chosen third-party purposes.

although perhaps a cliché via now, IBM officers additionally persevered to stress the changes between a “community-delivered” collaboration environment and one primarily based essentially on own computers – peculiarly Microsoft’s view. “[With Workplace Solutions] you don't have to have Microsoft workplace,” says Larry Bowden, vp, of IBM place of work application options.

IBM designed the solutions via gaining knowledge of the job roles required for performing ordinary units of initiatives or operations within a collection of vertical markets. at the same time, it regarded how to put in force horizontal business roles inside standard companies’ IT environments, including procurement, finance and administration, consumer service, and human elements. the brand new place of work solutions provide built-in software units that meet at that nexus; for example, techniques to provide branch banking or retail keep administration features.

“They’ve taken classes out of IBM’s functions group and . . . they have designed these applications to make these people with the important thing company roles extra helpful,” says Robert Mahowald, research supervisor at IDC. That should, the reasoning goes, make these organizations that undertake these solutions more successful.

since the options and IBM place of work items support industry standards, together with Java and XML, different items may also be built-in with other programs as well. IBM office comprises Lotus office, WebSphere Portal, Lotus Notes and Domino, and WebSphere Everyplace, in line with the enterprise’s web web page.

“Our focal point is on organizational productiveness,” says Bowden, adding, “Having a aggressive part isn't pretty much as good as having a sustainable competitive aspect.”

basically, imposing complete built-in techniques in keeping with the features that a business needs to operate as neatly because the roles of the individuals who operate the quintessential tasks, and featuring that to consumers in a solution kit that's the subsequent best thing – or so IBM officials hope – to a turnkey answer, provides that sustainable edge, enterprise executives put up.

The solutions don’t do everything. Implementation particulars stay but IBM’s intent is to take part of the ache out of the procedure for small and medium-sized groups that don’t have a division committed to presenting IT. “Why don’t they get you 70 p.c of the way?” asks Bowden rhetorically.

in a single of IBM’s demonstration situations, a financial institution branch teller receives a huge investigate and needs to acquire the approval of a consumer service adult, and also needs to clear the deposit for regulatory compliance and auditing. The branch banking answer provides job roles for three distinctive worker task units to satisfy the required enterprise capabilities. certainly, the new office solutions encompass more than 30 job functions or employee roles, company spokespeople talked about.

among the areas the place IBM is offering new workplace options are: retail, electronics, manufacturing, finance, telecommunications, executive, existence sciences, healthcare and automotive companies. moreover, the business has updated its branch Banking solution as well as its company Controls and Reporting answer (now at version 2.5).

fundamentally, although, IBM is taking a a little bit distinct tack on coopetition. To organizations like Oracle, SAP and PeopleSoft, “They’re asserting, ‘we’re going to deliver the plumbing for you,’” says IDC’s Mahowald, leaving part of the pie for different players.

IBM will additionally begin providing on demand internet conferencing subsequent month, officials noted. “you probably have a browser and a cell, which you could deploy an internet convention,” Bowden says. “in its place of buying the application from us, that you may just buy the provider.” This comes as a right away try and take company away from Microsoft’s are living assembly, says Mahowald.

furthermore, IBM also announced a brand new product in the office family. IBM place of work functions specific v2.0 is a brand new product designed for small and mid-sized companies and departments in enormous agencies. It comprises team collaboration, document management, web forms, assignment lists, and portal services as neatly user customization aspects. IBM workplace features categorical also integrates with the person's present applications and records, in addition to email, calendar and address book, and provides a range of collaboration tools including integrated fast messaging. it's going to ship in December, officers talked about.

ultimately, IBM debuted the latest liberate of WebSphere Portal – edition 5.1 – which adds digital portals, enterprise procedure workflow points, and more desirable content management capabilities. version 5.1 will be purchasable via the end of November.

The business will announce pricing for all of the items and features when the items can be found, enterprise officers stated.

  • Click the Page Menu icon and click Edit Page Layout as shown in Figure 7.80.
  • Click Add Portlets in the left column in the layout as shown in Figure 7.81.
  • A search screen renders on the page to let you search for the portlet you want to add. Search by Title Contains and enter PetTravel as the search criteria as shown in Figure 7.82.
  • In the search results, select the check box for both ListPetTravelCompany and PetTravelInfo as shown in Figure 7.83. Click OK.
  • ListPetTravelCompany and PetTravelInfo appear in the left column of the layout page as shown in Figure 7.84. Click the down arrow to the right of ListPetTravelCompany to move it below PetTravelInfo. Click Done.
  • Your two portlets appear in the portal site as shown in Figure 7.85.
  • In this step, you have added the two portlets to a portal page. They now appear in the portal site.

Step 3: Access a Portlet as a New User

In this step, enroll in WebSphere Portal as a new user by filling out your own profile information; then log into Portal using the new ID.

  • Sign up as a new WebSphere Portal user.
  • Open a browser and enter the URL http://<hostname>:<port_number>/wps/portal where <hostname> is the fully qualified host name of the machine that is running your WebSphere Portal, and <port_number> is the port number. For example, enter http://portalhost.ibm.com:10040/wps/portal.
  • Click the Sign Up link above the Log In button.
  • Fill in your user profile information to enroll in WebSphere Portal. You can choose your own user ID in Portal. In the example that follows as shown in Figure 7.86, the User ID registered is Mary. Click OK.
  • A message is displayed saying the user was created successfully.
  • Log in to Portal using the newly created user Mary.
  • Do you see the two portlets on the Pet Travel page? The portlets are not on user Mary's Pet Travel page. When you installed the portlets in WebSphere Portal, you did not grant users with access permission to the portlets. That is why you can only view the portlets as the administrator. No other users can view them at this point.
  • Exit WebSphere Portal by clicking Log Out in the upper-right corner.
  • In this step, you logged in as a new user and were not able to access the portlets because you have not been granted access yet.

Step 4: Set Access Permissions for a Portlet

In this step, all authenticated portal users will be granted access to the portlets.

  • Go to the administrative function for setting permissions for portlets. Grant users access to the newly installed portlets.
  • Log in to the WebSphere Portal as the Administrator again.
  • Click Administration at the top of the page.
  • Click Access, Resource Permissions.
  • Grant users access to the newly installed portlets.
  • In the Resource Permissions page, as shown next in Figure 7.87, click Portlets.
  • Search by Title Contains and enter PetTravel as the search criteria.
  • Click the Assign Access icon displayed beside the PetTravelInfo resource as shown in Figure 7.88.
  • Click the Edit Role icon beside the User role as shown in Figure 7.89.
  • There are currently no members in this role, as shown next in Figure 7.90. This explains why you weren't able to see the PetTravelInfo portlet when you logged in as a user who is not an administrator (for example, Mary). Click Add to add members to this role.
  • Select the All Authenticated Portal Users check box. Click OK.
  • Log out of Portal, and log in as a user who is not an administrator. For example, log in as Mary.
  • What do you see in the Pet Travel page? You should see PetTravelInfo but not ListPetTravelCompany as shown in Figure 7.91. You have granted users access to the PetTravelInfo portlet but have not done that for the ListPetTravelCompany portlet yet.
  • In this step, you set access permissions to the portlet PetTravelInfo and confirmed that all portal users now have access to the portlet.

IBM Liberty: Modular and solid as a rock | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Some stars take a little longer to shine. If you would have come to the IBM conference in ICC in Berlin, which took place in October 2011 and you wanted to attend one of the two presentations titled “Lean WebSphere environment for development”, you most likely wouldn’t have been able to find a seat, and you would have witnessed cheers and extended applause. What happened? It was an audience that, aside from the undeniable strengths of the IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS), had most likely got used to its somewhat poor attributes: complex configuration, high resource consumption and long start times for the server or application. In a worldwide premiere, Ian Robinson (WAS Chief Architect) and his colleague Tim deBoer presented an application server of a completely different kind: a start time of 2 s (seconds!) using an old-fashioned notebook and a 60 MB ZIP file for the installation of the entire application server – no more DVD stacks.

    IBM understands

An unequivocal and clear statement was met with even more enthusiasm: They are not unaware of what ails the developers, in particular. Yes, it has taken a while. As of today, however, everything is different. The presentation introduced the “Liberty Profile”, a completely new version of the IBM WebSphere Application Server.

And what’s up with that star, five years later? Back then it was a pre-release version of an application server. Today, IBM WebSphere Liberty – some may have to overcome their antipathy to the name and look at things in perspective – is a valuable server, certified for Java EE 7 Full Profile, that remains slim, fully suitable for production and supported by the manufacturer. As was the case before, the transition to the application server is very simple: after a download of only 50-100 MB, depending on the version, a simple unzip is all that’s needed and Liberty is installed. One more command and the server can be started.

The configuration is just as simple: if you like, a single XML file is all you need. Whoever uses Tomcat will be familiar with it. Anyone used to the IBM configuration has been unfamiliar with this kind of elegance and simplicity, until now.Even though Liberty is far less known than Tomcat or JBoss/WildFly, some myths die hard. They want to explicitly clear up a few of them.

Myth #1 about the configuration: “There’s no graphical configuration tool”. Yes, there is. If you want one, you can use the practical IBM WebSphere Liberty Server configuration tool [1], a browser-based administration and configuration tool. There is also the option to use the graphical editors from the Eclipse-based WebSphere Developer Tools (WDT) to edit the XML configuration files. WDT can be downloaded via the Eclipse marketplace, and thus Myth #2 is exposed: „You need expensive Rationals Tools to work with WebSphere“.

The configuration via XML file or UI serves another purpose, however, that you won’t know from other Java EE application servers, namely the definition of the features to be prepared by the application server. This partly explains the puzzle of how IBM has been so successful in making such a slim server. It is completely modular. The developer or administrator tailors their server precisely using the selection of modules in the configuration.

    Liberty consists of modules

IBM developed the Liberty Profile as a modular server with fine granularity from the bottom up. Standardized and proven OSGi technology is used for modularization, which is known to properly depict the ideas of versioning and dependencies between components.

A kernel of the server loads the specified Liberty modules at startup. It loads further modules automatically when they are needed. IBM started using internal modularization by way of OSGi in the classic WebSphere Application Server V6.1 back in 2006. In that case, however, you could ban the portlet container or JCA container that is not being used from the central memory. The granularity of the modularization of Liberty is much finer and, in their view, unique to Java EE servers. In order to clear up an obvious misunderstanding: Though OSGi is hidden from the normal Java EE user, you can also use it for the program code comprehensively in Liberty, of course – as is the case for many application servers. The list of features and their modules is too comprehensive for this article, so we’ve included a link [2]. They think an example might be useful here:

Imagine the Java EE application you use requires JSF. The JSF feature is loaded in Liberty through the corresponding configuration. Liberty automatically obtains the servlet and JSP features and their modules, thanks to OSGi. If the application does not use any JSF or JSP-based UI, but rather just servlet calls, only the servlet feature loads. As a result, no CPU cycle or central memory is used for the JSP or JSF functionality.

Liberty is completely Java EE 7 certified

Myth #3 about specification: “Liberty only supports the limited JEE Web Profile.” From the developer’s perspective it is great that, for the above-named feature concept, Liberty has been a fully certified Java EE 7 application server since Version 8.5.5.6 [3].This makes it much more than the classic WAS as far as this current programming model is concerned. It also supports the use of Java SE 1.6, 7.0 and 8.0, and not only in the in-house implementation of IBM, but also Oracle, for example. IBM offers comprehensive, production-ready support for Liberty via the standard agreements. This depends on what edition of Liberty you have. The selection ranges from a simple version certified only for Java EE 7 Web Profile to a clusterable edition that offers much more than only Java EE 7.

    Zero migration with Liberty

The above-described modularity allows IBM to break new ground with Liberty in order to make using Java EE technology as efficient and agile as possible. A migration of the runtime environment to a higher version eliminates the significant efforts involved in testing and, if necessary, adapting the existing applications for the new version. Given the backward compatibility of many specifications, the extent of adjustment for a single application is generally minor. However, it can’t be avoided. In addition, there are often a hundred or more applications that can be affected particularly in larger environments. And the migration process is not complete until the final application has been adapted. The result: unpredictable project durations that can often go on for many months.

Thanks to its modular structure, Liberty offers a surprisingly elegant solution for this. The migration of Liberty means that an old existing feature would have to make way for a new version; the new version does not simply replace the old one. Instead, the new version is added, which means that both are available.

An example: Liberty currently has the features “servlet-3.0” and “servlet-3.1”. If applications only require “servlet-3.0”, the server can be configured so that only this feature is loaded. In this way, the servlet runtime environment doesn’t change (from the application perspective). If this applies to all features required by the application, the application migration is no longer required here.

In addition, the OSGi-based architecture ensures that incompatibilities between features or certain versions of features are reported at server startup and not only at the runtime. For example, the simultaneous use of “servlet-3.0” and “websocket-1.1” is blocked from the start.

SEE ALSO: IBM technology evangelist: Outsourcers are “like pizza boxes”

    Continuous delivery of new features

IBM is breaking the mold when it comes to the development of and support for Liberty. The traditional way of adding functions through new releases and refresh packs can slow progress in many projects. Too rarely are there updates.

Here, IBM has two approaches to the solution, marketed under the slogan “Continuous Delivery Model”. It is now common that new functionality is made available through the quarterly fix packs. Something that was only available in a restricted format, mainly in the form of additional properties for fine configuration of individual components of the application server. Now, entirely new features are rolled out as follows:ejb-3.2, batch-1.0, jacc-1.5 and countless others were introduced in fix pack 8.5.5.6, so that the Java EE 7 certification was possible at this level and above. The real innovation, however, is the Liberty Repository. Here, IBM is providing new functions for Liberty continuously, without fixed schedules and lengthy announcements. This could involve new APIs, features, or tools, as well as scripts or “snippets” for the configuration of the server. Anyone looking for open source components like Struts, RichFaces, Hibernate or others with Liberty will find everything they need there.

The Repository is accessed from the IBM Installation Manager, directly via the website [4], or from the developer tools available for Eclipse environments (these in turn must be installed via the Eclipse Marketplace). Search and filter functions help you find suitable downloads from the well over 150 entries that are already there. For existing Liberty installations, it is also possible to access the Repository via the command line. In this case, the dependencies of features are taken into account automatically.

    Sweet spots in modern architectures

Despite all the euphoria, you have to look at the reality of the data centers, of course, in order to find the best application scenarios for Liberty. Often, a Java EE Application Server already exists, with recorded and possibly automated procedures for server installations, deployment and testing of applications, etc. Adding a new product here would have to be carefully considered. Since there is no “wsadmin” scripting language from the traditional WebSphere Application Server (WAS) for Liberty, such processes cannot be transferred from a WAS to Liberty without some effort.

Myth #4 about the target group: “Liberty is intended only for developers”.

It must be mentioned that Liberty can be used in production environments without restriction. There are cluster mechanisms that enable reliability and load balancing. Larger environments can be administered centrally via an interface (keyword: “collectives”). The scaling potential here is even better than in a classic WAS.

Therefore, using Liberty is less about replacing an existing infrastructure in one fell swoop. Instead, it makes more sense to select the projects that best take advantage of Liberty’s strengths. These are, for example, dynamic and modern runtime architectures like Docker or Cloud. Here, IBM has already created the best prerequisites for Liberty with the platform as a service solution Bluemix. Liberty is likewise recommended for highly scalable server environments with potentially thousands of specialized servers, since the slim and module structure of Liberty works particularly well in that context. Software architectures based on microservices would be a perfect scenario for that.

Even if you don’t take existing Java EE landscapes into account, there are still plenty of arguments in favor of Liberty: a certified programming model with Java EE 7, production capability through scalability and reliability mechanisms and the reliable support from IBM.

And on top of that, the IBM contingents in companies finally have a really cool product to show off again.

Configure SNMP agent for WebSphere Application Server | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

    Introduction

I have a customer here at Hungary. They wanted from us to do a WebSphere healtcheck on its production environment, and also have a look on its monitoring system to make it more reliable and comfortable. Customer has a Tivoli Monitoring System, but the production WebSphere environment does not have a proper neither ITCAM nor SNMP agent configured for monitoring.

Since the customer is running mainly on WebSphere Application Server version 8.5.0.1 and higher except some servers (for example WebSphere Portal and Business Process Manager which are using WAS 8.0) it was a perfect choice to use the WAS’ new SNMP agent, shipped with the product itself.

To clarify the differences between WebSphere SNMP agent and ITCAM for WebSphere.

  • ITCAM for WebSphere: has the capability to monitor in a wider perspecite including operating system attributes as well amongs WebSphere metrics.
  • WebSphere SNMP Agent: is just another server profile inside the configured node, and provides SNMP interface to the PMI (Performance Monitoring Infrastructure – inside WAS) metrics.
  • Since customer wants to monitor such basic metrics like CPU usage, uptime, JVM heap size and some pool resources, the SNMP agent seemed a better option for them.

    Prerequisites

As I mentioned in the Introduction section, the WebSphere built-in SNMP agent can be used only if you are running WAS version 8.5.0.1 and higher. I have never tried to configure it on previous version. On the other hand, SNMP agent can be used only in ND environment, so standalone servers are out of scope at the moment.

So if you have either standalone servers, or running version prior 8.5, you have only one choice if you want to monitor: ITCAM for WebSphere.

You have to enable PMI for the server which you want to monitor at least Basic level. If you are not sure, you can check it on the admin console by navigating the Monitoring and Tuning > Performance Monitoring Infrastructure (PMI) page and choose the node where your server is. Make sure that checkbox labeled as Enable Performance Monitoring Infrastructure and at least Basic level is set inside the Currently monitored statistic set section.

    Supported platforms are:

  • z/OS
  • IBM i
  • Distributed operating systems
  • Installation and configuration

Well, the configuration is pretty straightforward and described in the product KnowledgeCenter (see resources section), but not as clear as I thought. So let’s walk through together on it and you will read my comments as well. :)

Note: I have a demo environment within IBM Hungary’s office, and this playground running on RHEL 6.4 x64 (Santiago) and WAS version is 8.5.5.9 (see below).

Installed Product––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Name: IBM WebSphere Application Server Network DeploymentVersion: 8.5.5.9 ID ND Build Level cf091608.05Build Date: 2/25/16Package: com.ibm.websphere.ND.v85_8.5.5009.20160225_0435Architecture: x86–64 (64 bit)Installed Features:IBM 64-bit WebSphere SDK for JavaWebSphere Application Server Full Profile EJBDeploy tool for pre-EJB 3.0 modulesEmbeddable EJB containerStand-alone thin clients and resource adapters Installing the agent

In my environment, I have a dedicated node for the SNMP agents to separate them from the nodes which contains servers/clusters. It is not neccessary, I prefer this way and keep things smooth and clean. My complete topology looks like the following:

    My local environment’s topology

    Okay, let’s get started.

  • Start your Deployment Manager server if it is not running already.
  • Navigate the <Dmgr profile root>/bin directory, then execute the following command: ./wsadmin.sh -lang jacl and wait until the wsadmin prompt comes up.
  • Locate the SNMP Agent CAR file which can be found on the <WAS binary root>/optionalLibraries directory. In my case this is/opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/optionalLibraries/IBM/SNMPAgent/config/templates/templateSnmpAgentServer.car
  • You also need to collect your Cell name and the node name where you want to install the SNMP Agent. You can easily collect thom from the admin console. In my case, the cell name is TamasCell01 and the node name is TamasSNMP01.
  • Go back to the wsadmin interface and execute the following command$AdminTask setVariable {-scope Cell=TamasCell01,Node=TamasSNMP01 -variableName WAS_NODE_NAME -variableValue TamasSNMP01 }
  • Before they can deploy the agent, you have to define a name for that. In my case I want to monitor my only one server instance, so I named it: SNMPAgent_for_TamasCluster01Server01
  • Then execute the following:$AdminTask importServer {-archive /opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/optionalLibraries/IBM/SNMPAgent/config/templates/templateSnmpAgentServer.car -nodeName TamasSNMP01 -serverName SNMPAgent_for_TamasCluster01Server01 }
  • Last step is to save the configuration, so execute the following:$AdminConfig save
  • Deployment finished, you can close your wsadmin session.
  • Check the result on the admin console. To do that, navigate to the Server > Server types > Generic Servers page and check that the configuration has been created with the defined name and inside the configured node.
  • DO NOT START THE AGENT YET!
  • My SNMP agent’s configuration appeared on the admin console Configuring the agent

Okay, so they have a deployed SNMP agent, now it’s time to configure it. Please note, that an SNMP agent can monitor only one server at a time, so if you have a cluster with 4 servers on two nodes with a deployment manager, and you want to monitor all server instances, you have to install 4 SNMP agent for the servers, 2 SNMP agents for the nodeagents, and 1 SNMP agent for the Deployment Manager.

The agent configuration is little but uncomfortable, because you have to edit 3 XML files under the Deployment Manager config directory. A single SNMP agent has 3 XML files on the following path:<dmgr profile>/config/cells/<cell name>/nodes/<node name>servers/<server name>/. Before modifying these files, it’s a good idea to create a backup.

    agentConfig.xml

The agentConfig file contains all the neccessary configuration for the agent itself. Host name, port, username and password, just the basic stuff. Here is my configuration:

    <?xml version=”1.0" encoding=”UTF-8"?> <agentConfig agents=”WsSNMP” name=”WsSNMPAGENT” registryPort=”1135"> <metadata mibs=”nh-smi.smi,rfc1213-mib.mib,rmon-mib.mib,snmpv2-tc.mib,tokenring-rmon-mib.mib,websphere-mib.mib,rmon2-mib.mib” mibsFolder=”properties/mibs”/> <WsSNMP Behaviors=”getScalars,getCollection,getControl,getCounter,getData,getTrapDestinations” ipAddress=”10.106.12.13" jmxConfigFile=”jmxConfig.xml” snmpPort=”10162" views=”V1" authMode=”MD5" password=”******” user=”snmpagent” > <V1 communityNames=”public” jmacfgFiles=”oid.out” trapConfig=”trapConfig.xml”/> <getScalars class=”com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.behaviors.GetScalarsBehavior” oid=”1.3.6.1.4.1.1977.22.10.1.0"/> <getCollection class=”com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.behaviors.GetCollectionBehavior” oid=”1.3.6.1.4.1.1977.22.10.10.1.2"/> <getControl class=”com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.behaviors.GetControlBehavior” oid=”1.3.6.1.4.1.1977.22.10.11.1.2"/> <getCounter class=”com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.behaviors.GetCounterBehavior” oid=”1.3.6.1.4.1.1977.22.10.12.1.2"/> <getData class=”com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.behaviors.GetDataBehavior” oid=”1.3.6.1.4.1.1977.22.10.13.1.1"/> <getTrapDestinations class=”com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.behaviors.TrapDestinationBehavior” oid=”1.3.6.1.2.1.16.19.13.1.2"/> </WsSNMP> </agentConfig>

In this file, you have to take care for the following properties:

  • Port: The port number to register the bootstrap agent with the Java RMI service registry. This attribute is present in the <agentConfig> tag.Note 1: Specify a port number higher than 1024 to avoid using reserved ports.Note 2: you can leave this on default. If you have multiple SNMP agents on the same machine, you should take care not to have a port conflict.
  • ipAddress: The address of the host on which the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent runs. The same value should be set in SNMP monitoring software to communicate with the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. This attribute is present in the <WsSNMP> tag.Note: Specify the fully qualified hostname/IP address instead of the default value: localhost.
  • snmpPort The port number on which the WebSphere Snmp Agent listens for the snmp packets. The same value should be set in SNMP monitoring software to communicate with the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. This attribute is present in the <WsSNMP> tag. user The name of the user authorized to connect to the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. The same value should be set in SNMP monitoring software to communicate with the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. This attribute is present in the <WsSNMP> tag.Note: ”user” and „password” are the user/password credentials used for the SNMP monitor that is to connect to the SNMP Agent. These credentials are not the WebSphere Application Server credentials used to log in to the administrative console.
  • authMode The authentication mode used for communicating with the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. The same value should be set in SNMP monitoring software to communicate with the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. This attribute is present in the <WsSNMP> tag.Note: do not touch this. Use MD5, do not worry about the plain being, after the configuration completed and synchronized the changes to the node and finally start the agent, it will be masked.
  • password The password of the authorized user defined in the user attribute. The same value should be set in SNMP monitoring software to communicate with the IBM WebSphere Snmp Agent. This attribute is present in the <WsSNMP> tag.Note: the password must be at least 8 characters long.
  • jmxConfig.xml

The jmxConfig file is responsible to configure the connectivity to the desired server instance.

    <?xml version=”1.0" encoding=”UTF-8"?> <jmxConfig connectorType=”SOAP” security=”yes” serverTypes=”SOAPmbeanServer RMImbeanServer”> <SOAPmbeanServer address=”localhost” port=”8885" user=”admin” password=”*****” connectorSOAPConfig=”file:/opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/TamasCustom01/properties/soap.client.props” keyStore=”/opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/TamasDmgr01/etc/DummyClientKeyFile.jks” ksPassword=”*****” trustStore=”/opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/TamasDmgr01/etc/DummyClientTrustFile.jks” tsPassword=”******” sampleInterval=”60" > </SOAPmbeanServer> <RMImbeanServer address=”localhost” port=”2804" user=”admin” password=”*****” connectorRMIConfig=”file:${sas.client.props}” sslRMIConfig=”file:${ssl.client.props}” sampleInterval=”60"> </RMImbeanServer> <mbean> <collection counterMode=”automatic” counters=”” expression=”.*”/> </mbean> </jmxConfig>

This section is quite well documented in the KnowledgeCenter except two attributes: the trustStore and the keyStore. In normal cases WAS using its own trustStore and keyStore which is in p12 format and can be found inside the config directory of the Deployment Manager. However, the agent cannot use those files because the invalid format. The agent only able to consume JKS stores (Java KeyStore). So to achieve a correct configuration you can simply use the DummyKey and Trust stores inside the Deployment Manager. The correct path is in my case was: <Dmgr profile root>/etc/DummyClient<Trust|Key>File.jks

    trapConfig.xml

If you plan for using traps, this is right place for you. Unfortunately, I am not going to cover this section in this blog post.

    <?xml version=”1.0" encoding=”UTF-8"?> <tns:TrapDestinations xmlns:tns=”http://www.ibm.com/schema/WsT/SNMPSchema/TRAPConfig/” xmlns:xsi=”http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance” xsi:schemaLocation=”http://www.ibm.com/schema/WsT/SNMPSchema/TRAPConfig/TrapConfig.xsd „> <TrapDestination community=”public” index=”1" name=”${Explorer}” protocol=”1" status=”1" version=”2"> <HostName></HostName> <Port></Port> </TrapDestination> </tns:TrapDestinations>

You can use my config files as a template in your environment.

    Starting the agent

Okay, finally they configured their agent, it’s time to start. But before they can start it, just in case execute a full resynchronize command for the node where the SNMP agent resides. To do that:

  • Sign in the WAS admin console and navigate to the System administration > Nodes page. Select the node where your SNMP agent is, and click the Full Resynchronize button. Wait for the success message on the top.
  • To start the SNMP agent, navigate the Servers > Server types > Generic servers page.
  • Select your agent, then click on the Start button.
  • Wait until the red cross at the end of the line changes to a green arrow pointing to the right.
  • Check the logs on the filesytem. The SNMP agent has the standard SystemOut.log SystemErr.log log files and a pid file containing the OS process id on the standard logging path: <profile root>/logs/<server name>. You should see something like the following:
  • Repository Dir: /opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/TamasSNMP01/config/cells/TamasCell01/nodes/TamasSNMP01/servers/SNMPAgent_for_TamasCluster01Server01 Agent WsSNMPAGENT is bound to the registry at port 1135 Connected to Server TamasCluster01Server01 on Node TamasCustom01 … ========================================================================== ======*********IBM WebSphere SNMP Capability*********====== – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – IBM WebSphere SNMP Capability IS RUNNING………. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As you can see, my SNMP agent started and connected to my server node running on another profile. It’s a good practice to check the agent using netstat to validate the listening status on the configure snmpPort (10162).

    Tracing

In normal circumstances, the agent is not really a talking type guy. Even if he has a headache. So in order to provide the cure, you have to make him talk. A lot. So being serious, enabling the trace is not as easy as a normal WAS server. You have to create a properties file, then you have to modify the JVM generic arguments, nothing special just uncomfortable. Let’s do this.

First of all, you have to create a properties file with the following entries.

    traceFileName=stdout com.ibm.ws.pmi.snmp.*=all=enabled com.tivoli.snmp.*=all=enabled

When your file is created, you have to upload it to somewhere on your server. Generally I prefer to store files on the designated directories where meant to be, so I copied the file to my <SNMP node profile>/properties/ directory.

The last step is to configure the SNMP Agent adding some generic JVM arguments to the agent, then restart. To augment the agent with those properties, on the admin console navigate to the Servers > Server types > Generic Servers > Your SNMP server > Process Definition > Java Virtual Machine page and add the following lines to the Generic JVM arguments textarea. Take care for the white spaces and enters. One attribute per line.

    -DtraceSettingsFile=/opt/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles/TamasSNMP01/properties/SNMPTrace.properties-Djava.util.logging.manager=com.ibm.ws.bootstrap.WsLogManager-Djava.util.logging.configureByServer=true JVM arguments

Now you have to Terminate the server and Start when terminated. If your trace configuration is correct, the trace level messages should appear in the SystemOut.log. A trace should look like this:

    Standard WebSphere like trace stream

If debug messages are no longer required in your environment, simply remove the Generic JVM arguments from the configuration and restart your agent.

    Testing

Last but not least, open a monitoring software (for example MIB Explorer or MibBrowser) and try to connect to the SNMP agent. Remember: all the required information for the connection can be found in the agentConfig.xml file (including the username and password as well). So, connect to your SNMP agent and let’s execute an SNMPWALK against it. In MibBrowser you can navigate to the WEBSPHERE-MIB > networkharmoni > applications > webSphere > wsCounterTable > wsCounterEntry > wsCounterName. Right click on the las one and execute an SNMPWALK. Voilá! You received the names of those PMI attributes, which is currently enabled on the monitored server (in my case this is the Basic attribute set).

    MIB files

If your monitoring software and/or team ask you to provide the neccessary MIB files, you can download them from the <WAS binary root>/properties/mibs directory. Simply download them and provide to requestor. These are the required files (total 7):

  • nh-smi.smi
  • rfc1213-mib.mib
  • rmon2-mib.mib
  • rmon-mib.mib
  • snmpv2-tc.mib
  • tokenring-rmon-mib.mib
  • websphere-mib.mib
  • Closure

These are just the basics. You can playing aroung to fine tune your monitoring conditions (playing around the MBeans) and trap definitions. I hope this blog entry helped you a little or lot, and saved some time for you. This configuration took me almost a week which is insane (especially if you think how complicated in reality as well).

    Happy monitoring!
