The name stack effects are back in reverse order, with the most contemporary application initially and the entry point at the conclusion. I invoked Procedure1 within the i Navigator’s RunSQL scripts utility, therefore, the name stack begins with the QZDASOINIT program.
The 2d outcomes set carries fewer entries because the IBM system classes are excluded:
each time an ILE C application starts there are two name stack entries: leading and _C_pep (software entry element). you could eliminate the useless rows by using filtering out the _C_pep value in the where clause.
just a few notes on the output columns from this table characteristic: The “stack entry” column is a sequential counter for uniquely selecting each and every row. The “application quantity” column is a counter that increments each and every time a brand new application is encountered on the name stack. as a result of each program can have distinctive tactics within the call stack, this value suggests when a new application boundary is encountered. The “Request stage” column (no longer shown) is lower back from the QWVRCSTK API, however doesn’t seem to convey a great deal information.
With as little or an awful lot aspect as necessary, the comprehensive ILE/OPM call stack is purchasable to your SQL application. This information will also be very beneficial in an error handler. If, as an example, a saved technique receives an error, this name stack can be formatted as textual content, XML, or HTML, stuffed in a protracted VARCHAR or CLOB and saved to a desk or IFS file for later evaluation.
Procedure4 proven under suggests an error handler that wraps the name stack into a simple text string formatted with carriage return/line feed characters (X’0D25′ in US EBCDIC).CREATE manner PROCEDURE4 SET choice COMMIT=*NONE begin DECLARE @CALLSTACK VARCHAR(6144) now not NULL DEFAULT 'CS:'; DECLARE proceed HANDLER FOR SQLEXCEPTION begin DECLARE @SQL_STATE CHAR(5) no longer NULL DEFAULT '00000'; DECLARE @MSG_TEXT VARCHAR(70); GET STACKED DIAGNOSTICS EXCEPTION 1 @MSG_TEXT=MESSAGE_TEXT; SET @CALLSTACK='Error '||@MSG_TEXT||X'0D25'; -- When an error happens, get the call stack FOR facts AS CALLSTACK_NO_IBM CURSOR FOR select STACKENTRY,PGMNAM,remark FROM desk(QGPL.GETCALLSTACK('Y')) CS where technique<>'_C_pep' ORDER by using STACKENTRY DO SET @CALLSTACK=@CALLSTACK || cast(STACKENTRY AS VARCHAR(10)) || ' ' || PGMNAM || ' stmt: ' || commentary || X'0D25'; end FOR; -- Do anything with the text facts RETURN; conclusion; -- inaccurate code encountered signal SQLSTATE '38001' SET MESSAGE_TEXT='I Goofed'; end
The formatted name stack textual content will look like this:Error I Goofed 1 PROCEDURE4 stmt: 0000000081 2 PROCEDURE4 stmt: 0000000041 4 PROCEDURE5 stmt: 0000000014
Who Am I? Retrieving The existing software name
Let’s take yet another example of what can also be gleaned from the name stack. Programatically getting the name of the latest technique (with out hardcoding it) is beneficial when recording audit tips about what code changed a desk’s row.
SQL Server, for instance, has a metadata feature known as @@PROCID in order to return the enjoyable identifier of an SQL module (process, trigger, function). DB2 for i has no such analog (however in limited circumstances GET DIAGNOSTICS can return the ROUTINE_NAME). The CallStackEntry scalar function can provide DB2 the same performance as @@PROCID and more.
The inputs to the CallStackEntry function are:
The characteristic’s output is a VARCHAR(160), but the price it returns is one in every of two codecs counting on how UsePgmLevel turned into populated:
So how is the feature used? Say there’s a need to have a trigger listing the desk, time, person, and application of a row insert in here AUDIT_TEST table:CREATE table QGPL.AUDIT_TEST ( TABLE_NAME CHAR(10) no longer NULL, person CHAR(10) no longer NULL, CHANGE_STAMP TIMESTAMP no longer NULL, CHANGE_PGM CHAR(20));
To make things pleasing, a couple of software tables will want this audit table populated and the set off code should be consistent, if viable. because of code sharing, of selected hobby is the need for the trigger to dynamically get values for the TABLE_NAME (base table) and CHANGE_PGM columns. The CHANGE_PGM is not the set off itself, but somewhat the name of the SQL manner or HLL software that achieved an INSERT.
here is likely one of the many “fancy” utility tables that want auditing:CREATE desk QGPL.MY_DATA ( DUMMY VARCHAR(256));
here trigger will record the information within the audit table after statistics is inserted into table MY_DATA:CREATE OR replace trigger QGPL.TRIGGER_MY_DATA AFTER INSERT ON QGPL.MY_DATA FOR every statement MODE DB2SQL SET alternative COMMIT=*NONE, USRPRF=*proprietor begin DECLARE @CALLER CHAR(20); DECLARE @set off CHAR(20); DECLARE @LONG_TABLE VARCHAR(257); DECLARE @table VARCHAR(10); /* Get identify of set off - CHAR(20) */ SET @set off=QGPL.CALLSTACKENTRY(1,'Y','Y'); /* Get identify of base desk from trigger catalog */ choose EVENT_OBJECT_SCHEMA || '.' || EVENT_OBJECT_TABLE, SYSTEM_EVENT_OBJECT_TABLE INTO @LONG_TABLE, @table FROM QSYS2.SYSTRIGGERS /* Get set off identify in accordance with device application name */ the place TRIGGER_PROGRAM_LIBRARY=LEFT(@trigger,10) AND TRIGGER_PROGRAM_NAME=appropriate(@set off,10); /* Get name of caller - CHAR(20) */ SET @CALLER=QGPL.CALLSTACKENTRY(2,'Y','Y'); INSERT INTO QGPL.AUDIT_TEST VALUES(@desk,consumer,CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, @CALLER); end;
The trigger uses the CALLSTACKENTRY function with a call stack level of 1 to dynamically get its personal name:SET @trigger=QGPL.CALLSTACKENTRY(1,'Y','Y');
also, the set off uses the CALLSTACKENTRY characteristic with a call stack degree of two to get the name of the prior non-IBM program on the call stack. this will both be blank (for dynamic SQL) or the application name of a process that ran an INSERT commentary:SET @set off=QGPL.CALLSTACKENTRY(2,'Y','Y');
Now, to validate that it works, create a kept procedure to insert information into table MY_DATA:CREATE OR substitute manner QGPL.INSERT_MY_DATA SET choice COMMIT=*NONE start INSERT INTO QGPL.MY_DATA VALUES('hiya'); conclusion
Invoke the procedure:call QGPL.INSERT_MY_DATA;
at last, query the audit desk:opt for * FROM QGPL.AUDIT_TEST;
The query of the audit desk will reveal you here consequences:
7/26/13 9:26 PM
As expected, the trigger dynamically looked up its own device software name and the non-IBM software that known as it. The trigger additionally picked up the table name it's in accordance with (due to the SYSTRIGGER catalog view) in order that the table identify can be covered within the audit without hardcoding it within the trigger. don't forget that DB2 SQL routines are in fact compiled C courses. The system catalog views tune the correspondence between the short system name and the lengthy SQL name for all SQL primarily based triggers, strategies and capabilities.
The “Caller” column consists of the system name of the calling software; although, the system name can also be used to look up the lengthy SQL name of the caller through the use of the SYSPROCS catalog view. The one caveat about hardcoding a call stack entry value of two, is in the thorny case the place an INSERT factors multiple triggers to fire. If triggers are probably nested then code will be required to search the call stack to locate the non-IBM/non-set off code working an INSERT commentary.
So the accurate same set off code (not including the trigger name and desk identify) may also be used to audit any table. Of course, there's a cost to searching up this tips dynamically instead of hardcoding it, but when low code upkeep is your highest precedence then this approach is advantageous.
To sum it up, when your software takes a dive, recording the call stack counsel can yield valuable insights into how the issue befell. Likewise, in case you deserve to dynamically look up the identify of the present software or caller, the name stack is there to give the crucial data!

This chapter brought DB2 and its background, discusses the forms of clients and servers purchasable with DB2, and covers the forms of clients and servers obtainable with DB2.This chapter is from the book
DATABASE 2 (DB2) for Linux, UNIX, and windows is a knowledge server developed by means of IBM. edition 9.5, available on account that October 2007, is probably the most latest version of the product, and the one on which they focus in this booklet.
in this chapter you are going to study concerning the following:
in view that the Nineteen Seventies, when IBM analysis invented the Relational model and the Structured question Language (SQL), IBM has developed an entire family unit of statistics servers. development started on mainframe systems comparable to digital desktop (VM), virtual Storage extended (VSE), and varied digital Storage (MVS). In 1983, DB2 for MVS edition 1 was born. "DB2" become used to point out a shift from hierarchical databases—such as the information management equipment (IMS) regular on the time—to the new relational databases. DB2 building persisted on mainframe systems as well as on distributed structures.1Figure 1.1 shows one of the crucial highlights of DB2 background.
In 1996, IBM announced DB2 regularly occurring Database (UDB) version 5 for dispensed structures. With this edition, DB2 became capable of store all types of digital facts, together with traditional relational information, as well as audio, video, and text files. It become the primary edition optimized for the net, and it supported a variety of disbursed platforms—as an instance, OS/2, windows, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris—from multiple carriers. additionally, this ordinary database became capable of run on a lot of hardware, from uniprocessor techniques and symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) techniques to hugely parallel processing (MPP) programs and clusters of SMP techniques.
even though the relational mannequin to keep information is essentially the most accepted within the industry nowadays, the hierarchical model in no way misplaced its importance. in the past few years, because of the popularity of eXtensible Markup Language (XML), a resurgence within the use of the hierarchical model has taken region. XML, a flexible, self-describing language, relies on the hierarchical model to keep records. With the emergence of recent net technologies, the deserve to shop unstructured forms of statistics, and to share and exchange counsel between agencies, XML proves to be the foremost language to satisfy these needs. nowadays they see an exponential boom of XML documents utilization.
IBM recognized early on the significance of XML, and massive investments had been made to deliver pureXML technology; a expertise that provides for better aid to store XML documents in DB2. After five years of building, the effort of 750 builders, architects, and engineers paid off with the unencumber of the primary hybrid statistics server in the market: DB2 9. DB2 9, accessible on account that July 2006, is a hybrid (also known as multi-structured) statistics server since it allows for storing relational facts, as well as hierarchical information, natively. while different information servers in the market, and former models of DB2 might save XML files, the storage formulation used changed into not most beneficial for performance and adaptability. With DB2 9's pureXML know-how, XML documents are saved internally in a parsed hierarchical manner, as a tree; therefore, working with XML files is significantly superior. In 2007, IBM has long past even additional in its support for pureXML, with the release of DB2 9.5. DB2 9.5, the newest version of DB2, not simplest enhances and introduces new points of pureXML, but it additionally brings advancements in installing, manageability, administration, scalability and performance, workload management and monitoring, regulatory compliance, issue choice, help for utility development, and aid for business associate applications.
DB2 is obtainable for many systems including device z (DB2 for z/OS) and gadget i (DB2 for i5/OS). unless otherwise referred to, once they use the term DB2, they are regarding DB2 edition 9.5 operating on Linux, UNIX, or windows.

i-based Power Systems shops looking for a power tool to supercharge their database development and maintenance tasks may want to check out the latest release from AquaFold. Last week the Silicon Valley company unveiled Aqua Data Studio version 7.0, which adds support for the DB2/400 (DB2 for i) database, brings a new entity relationship modeling component that should help developers better understand how their applications consume data, and support for seven languages.
AquaFold bills its Aqua Data Studio as an integrated development environment that provides programmers, database developers, and systems administrators with a single, consistent interface to work with for all major database management systems. The Java-based product was created in 2002 by company founder and CEO, Niels Gron, as freeware, and it soon went commercial. But that hasn’t stopped the growth of the tool, which today costs $399 and has more than 300,000 users around the world.
Before ADS version 7, the software focused on three areas of functionality for relational database management systems (RDBMs). The first was graphical database administration and query. Users can browse and modify any database from the product’s GUI and create SQL scripts. The second area was a collection of comparison tools that allow users to view the differences of files, directory structures, source control files, and databases and schemas. The third area of focus was source control. Full clients for Subversion (SVN) and CVS source control systems enabled users to track all development and maintenance activity.
With the launch of ADS version 7, AquaFold has expanded into the “fourth estate” of database maintenance: database entity relationship (ER) modeling.
AquaFold says the new ER Modeler enables developers to create, explore, detail, and modify database schemas to create fully editable diagrams of database relationships and objects. What’s more, developers can modify an ER diagram and then have these changes applied to the database schemas (and the relationships they have with objects) by simply activating the automated scripting function in the product. This greatly reduces development time and can vastly improve a developer’s understanding of database schemas and relationships, the company says.
The new entity relationship modeling feature in ADS version 7 gives users tools for exploring the relationships in their databases, including DB2/400.
Another major new feature in ADS version 7 is support for DB2/400. (The folks at AquaFold labeled this database as “DB2 iSeries (formerly known as DB2 for i5/OS).” Technically, IBM calls it “DB2 for i,” but if you just use the informal “DB2/400,” everybody will know what you’re talking about.)
Like it does for other databases, ADS provides a way for developers or administrators to manage the DB2/400 database and write queries. From the schema browser, users can visually edit many elements of their DB2/400 database, including tables, views, indexes, packages, sequences, stored procedures, triggers, aliases, nicknames, user-defined functions, materialized views, and user-defined datatypes.
The product’s query window is where the developers write and fine tune their SQL scripts. The split-paned and tabbed interface of the ADS query window gives SQL developers all kinds of shortcuts, including automated formatters, syntax coloring controls, auto completion, and auto describe features. Developers also select the format of their results from this view (data, INSERT statement, XML, HTML, or XLS are the options), view the SQL archive, or pull up the table-data editor for previewing the SQL changes before committing.
The version of ADS for DB2/400 includes most of the other editors and tools, including the ER modeler, comparison tools, import and export tools, script generators, and source control functions.
AquaFold has made many other enhancements in ADS version 7, including: support for English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, and Japanese (to go along with localization for simplified and traditional Chinese, Russian, and Korean); support for the integrated debuggers for DB2 for LUW (Linux, Unix, and Windows, otherwise known as DB2 UDB) and Microsoft SQL Server; the introduction of new tools for monitoring and managing the configuration, storage requirements, and security controls of DB2 for LUW and MySQL databases; support for pivot charts; new filters and sorting in the visual table editor; and support for character-level comparisons, among many other enhancements.
In addition to support for DB2/400 and Apache Derby, ADS version 7 adds support for Oracle 11g, DB2 9.5, Informix 11, and PostgreSQL 8.3.
ADS version 7 is available now. Single-user commercial licenses start at $399. Developers actively participating in open source projects may be eligible for a free copy of ADS as part of its recently introduced open source developer license. In any case, free 14-day trials are available from the company’s Web site at www.aquafold.com.

This chapter introduced DB2 and its history, discusses the types of clients and servers available with DB2, and covers the types of clients and servers available with DB2.This chapter is from the book
DATABASE 2 (DB2) for Linux, UNIX, and Windows is a data server developed by IBM. Version 9.5, available since October 2007, is the most current version of the product, and the one on which they focus in this book.
In this chapter you will learn about the following:
Since the 1970s, when IBM Research invented the Relational Model and the Structured Query Language (SQL), IBM has developed a complete family of data servers. Development started on mainframe platforms such as Virtual Machine (VM), Virtual Storage Extended (VSE), and Multiple Virtual Storage (MVS). In 1983, DB2 for MVS Version 1 was born. "DB2" was used to indicate a shift from hierarchical databases—such as the Information Management System (IMS) popular at the time—to the new relational databases. DB2 development continued on mainframe platforms as well as on distributed platforms.1Figure 1.1 shows some of the highlights of DB2 history.
In 1996, IBM announced DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Version 5 for distributed platforms. With this version, DB2 was able to store all kinds of electronic data, including traditional relational data, as well as audio, video, and text documents. It was the first version optimized for the Web, and it supported a range of distributed platforms—for example, OS/2, Windows, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris—from multiple vendors. Moreover, this universal database was able to run on a variety of hardware, from uniprocessor systems and symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems to massively parallel processing (MPP) systems and clusters of SMP systems.
Even though the relational model to store data is the most prevalent in the industry today, the hierarchical model never lost its importance. In the past few years, due to the popularity of eXtensible Markup Language (XML), a resurgence in the use of the hierarchical model has taken place. XML, a flexible, self-describing language, relies on the hierarchical model to store data. With the emergence of new Web technologies, the need to store unstructured types of data, and to share and exchange information between businesses, XML proves to be the best language to meet these needs. Today they see an exponential growth of XML documents usage.
IBM recognized early on the importance of XML, and large investments were made to deliver pureXML technology; a technology that provides for better support to store XML documents in DB2. After five years of development, the effort of 750 developers, architects, and engineers paid off with the release of the first hybrid data server in the market: DB2 9. DB2 9, available since July 2006, is a hybrid (also known as multi-structured) data server because it allows for storing relational data, as well as hierarchical data, natively. While other data servers in the market, and previous versions of DB2 could store XML documents, the storage method used was not ideal for performance and flexibility. With DB2 9's pureXML technology, XML documents are stored internally in a parsed hierarchical manner, as a tree; therefore, working with XML documents is greatly enhanced. In 2007, IBM has gone even further in its support for pureXML, with the release of DB2 9.5. DB2 9.5, the latest version of DB2, not only enhances and introduces new features of pureXML, but it also brings improvements in installation, manageability, administration, scalability and performance, workload management and monitoring, regulatory compliance, problem determination, support for application development, and support for business partner applications.
DB2 is available for many platforms including System z (DB2 for z/OS) and System i (DB2 for i5/OS). Unless otherwise noted, when they use the term DB2, they are referring to DB2 version 9.5 running on Linux, UNIX, or Windows.
DB2 is part of the IBM information management (IM) portfolio. Table 1.1 shows the different IM products available.Table 1.1. Information Management Products
