Two enterprise-class open-source projects that Alibaba has contributed to the community are Ant Design, a UI design language implemented on React, and Egg.js, a Web framework.6. Ant Design
Ant Design is the result of middle and back-end design experiences from the development of Ant Financial. Its product interaction and visual style aims to be “inconspicuous, definite and cheerful”, and improve user and designer experiences. Abundant, flexible and valuable base components are accumulated to provide solutions for frequently asked questions. TypeScript supports complete type definition, and the high-quality out-of-the-box React components are based on npm + webpack + dva enterprise-class development frameworks.
Major Ant Design developments of 2017:
1. Ant Design 2.x continued its evolution from version 2.6.0 to version 2.13.11.
2. The front-end scaffolding for Ant Design Pro was introduced in October, providing best practices for typical middle and back-end application scenarios.
3. Ant Design 3.0 was released in early December, providing a brand-new design system and many new features. The release log can be found here.
In the two years since its open-sourcing, Ant Design has continued improving by collecting various design and development requirements. The design team responsible for Ant Design is constantly refining design specifications and adjusting overall visual effects, something which is well reflected in version 3.0.
Currently, the main focus remains on publicizing the long-term project development plan, collecting new requirements and issuing reports regularly through DingTalk and GitHub, and interacting closely with the community. The project has fixed cycles for the development of minor versions, where versions with bug fixes are released on a weekly basis and bigger updates are released on a monthly basis.
Ant Design is one of the most popular UI component libraries in the React community, and is used by technology companies including Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, Meituan, Didi, and ele.me. Ant Design has garnered over 21,485 stars in GitHub, and was nominated in Open Source China’s 2017 Top 20 list of open-source Chinese software.
Ant Design has reached a relatively advanced stage after the release of v3.0, and will not be undergoing major changes anytime soon. Instead, the team will be working to enhance the visual layout and theme configurations, and promote internationalization and integration.

Egg is an enterprise-class, basic web framework developed to overcome deficiencies found with Node.js. When micro-service architecture is adopted, specific tasks such as service granularity, API interface and development maintenance are involved, and the front and back-end face the conflict of flexible user experience vs. back-end service general utility. Node.js has managed to overcome this widely-criticized weakness, and npm package is now the most popular peer, with vast improvement in single-threaded problems, avoidance of burdensome callbacks with the help of ES norm, a type system based on mature TypeScript, and better overall performance.
Unfortunately, the infrastructure maturity and popularity of Node.js are not a match made in heaven, and so it is essentially still a newcomer. In the industry, there are very few Web framework practices, and the community repeats a lot of work from scratch and lacks unified referential norms, which brings many repeated and unnecessary issues. Compared to the application, Node.js fundamental technology research is still rare, so ease of availability is a stumbling block.
The application of Node.js in Alibaba started in 2011. After experiencing difficulties, including starting from scratch, Alibaba began to seriously consider not only unifying the ecology build, but also customization support. Egg was born at the right time and is anticipated to be a fundamental framework for Web development to help all teams in building upper-layer framework. Egg was cultivated from engineering practices of large-scale enterprise applications, including robustly supporting Singles’ Day sales on November 11, and was polished in four versions of microkernels throughout 3 years.
Egg is based on Koa and is totally different from the upper-layer frameworks of Sails/LoopBack. It lies in the middle-layer and provides “microkernel + plug-in component mechanism + framework customization capability”, delivering a whole set of unified agreements for the service of upper-layer frameworks. It also adopts a gradual development method with extreme flexibility, so it is suitable for the fast development of small project and development by enterprise-level teams.
Within just a year of open-sourcing, Egg has received over 500 Pull Requests (272 in the host library), handled over 1,200 issues, and published over 40 official documents of over 100,000 words. It has also received over 6,000+ stars in GitHub and nearly 10,000 PVs on its official website.
Within Alibaba, it has served over 500 front end developers and over 1,000 apps, while outside Alibaba, Egg has received feedback for improvement from over 90 developers in various companies, including Baidu, Tencent, Quanmin and Dxy, and even Rod Vagg, Director of Node TSC, who got involved retweeting about Egg!
In the future, Egg will focus on the optimization of developer experience and the continued sharing of best practices.
Besides the 1,000+ apps within Alibaba, the technology team also eliminated some bottom-layer bugs in Node.js, and explored with Intel the further improvement in Node.js functions. In addition, Alibaba has just released a Node.js performance platform, and provides Node.js running + monitoring and diagnosis services for free.

Atlas, a flexible Android development framework, was created to assist with internal issues at Alibaba. With the continuous development of mobile Taobao, the R&D team became larger and functions more complicated, which required the fast iteration of end-side businesses. On the other hand, the problems encountered during development, operation and maintenance continually increased, which also required fixing online bugs. As such, the mobile Taobao team began to think about how to simplify the complicated problems and conduct dynamic deployment to improve mobile development efficiency.
Atlas dockerizes to solve large-scale team cooperation issues, which is suitable for the development of large or small-sized apps on system versions higher than Android 4.0 and supports dynamic publishing. Generally speaking, the industry usually uses plug-in component frameworks. However, Atlas adopts modularization, which divides businesses and reuses common parts in consideration of reusability. The project adopts the approach of OSGI (Open Grid Services Infrastructure (OGSI)) and separates business to independently form a bundle for isolation and decoupling operations, so that concurrent development, fast iteration and dynamic deployment can be realized.
Atlas is a result of five years of development by Alibaba’s mobile team, and makes technical preparations for static and dynamic modularization. After the official open-sourcing this year, Atlas has maintained the publishing of a major version every two months, and uses the same coding both in Alibaba and the community. Altas’ improvements lie in stability, tool chain upgrade, dexpatch, etc. With regard to dynamic deployment, new functions include component support, dexpatch function, and bundle view reuse.
As an early open-source project, initially Altas was not perfect and received criticism for its high barriers to entry, incomplete documentation and primitive demos. The Altas team immediately decided to form a DingTalk group to help developers understand and have access to Atlas, and make better documentation and demos. Many Chinese Android apps are using Atlas (such as Tmall, Taobao, Xiami, Youku and Alibaba Cloud), as well as at least three non-Chinese apps.
Atlas’ vision is to “bring developers back to the golden era of app development”. In the future, Altas will continue to improve documentation, upgrade the toolchain, lower access costs, improve stability and compatibility, introduce a complementary Emas for Atlas business services, and increase convenience for server-side publishing.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is accelerating its efforts to mandate vehicle-to-vehicle communications, a step that could help lower the number of traffic deaths in the U.S., but also creates a major challenge for data security and privacy.
NHTSA plans to submit a proposed connected car rule by the end of the year. New cars equipped with the communications technology could hit the market by the early 2020s, the Transportation Department estimates. The technology could have great public benefits, potentially reducing the 30,000-plus crash related deaths that occur in the U.S. every year. But the technology would emit a stream of data broadcasting the location of millions of cars, a potential security dilemma.
A group of eight automakers already has put years of work into developing an unprecedented system to manage such risks. The system is a form of so-called public key infrastructure, which employs encryption and authentication and is widely used by online shopping sites and banks. The idea is to let two vehicles that have no existing relationship securely exchange data.
PKI technology is effective, but not infallible. Attackers stole credentials from a heating and air conditioning contractor to breach Target’s network and point of sale system in 2013. A software flaw called Heartbleed, discovered in April 2014, potentially exposed secret encryption keys used by servers. The Canada Revenue Agency blamed the bug for the 2014 theft of hundreds of social security numbers from its website.
The data stream that will come from vehicles is bound to attract a broad range of hackers. “A terrorist might want to shut down a major bridge or tunnel in a major urban area by causing a whole bunch of vehicles to misbehave,” said Steven Shladover, a program manager for California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology, a research and development program at the University of California, Berkeley. Such manipulation might be accomplished by sending fake safety messages from one vehicle to the next.
Designers of the new security system for connected cars are trying to guard against that possibility. The system would be larger than anything in use today, creating a new set of technical challenges. A PKI system for connected cars ultimately will need to scale to 200 million or more vehicles, while maintaining driver privacy and fending off hackers.
Automakers including Ford Motor, General Motors, Nissan Motor, Mazda Motor Corp., Honda Motor, Volkswagen and its luxury brand Audi, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. plan to finish a proof of concept for a security credential management system by August of next year. The automakers, part of a Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership consortium, have a cooperative agreement with the Transportation Department to build the system. CAMP has already invested 11 years researching and testing various security approaches.
“The unique challenge that is addressed in the CAMP security system is: Developing a system which meets the security technical requirements while also satisfying the privacy goals,” said Michael Shulman, a technical leader at Ford, and program manager for CAMP’s Vehicle Safety Communications Consortium. “Other PKI systems, such as the system in operation by the Department of Defense, do not have the same privacy goals,” said Dr. Shulman, who spoke to CIO Journal both on the phone and via email. Vehicle-to-vehicle communications, as envisioned by U.S. regulators, would broadcast the position of every equipped vehicle 10 times per second to similarly equipped cars and trucks within 1,000 feet of each other for the purposes of crash avoidance, he said.
PKI makes use of encryption and pairs of digital keys to encode and decode messages. The sending party in a communication uses a private key to digitally sign its message, embedding information that validates its identity. An associated public key is used by a receiver to verify the sender’s digital signature.
The use of PKI is transparent to most online shoppers, because their Internet browser comes equipped with public keys that help verify the authenticity of websites. The shopper simply sees the letters "https" in the Web address, often alongside the image of a padlock. Drivers won’t need to worry about the technology either, because it will be managed automatically. Connected vehicles will broadcast messages that contain their position and speed. Security credentials known as certificates are sent along with those messages. A third-party known as a certificate authority validates those credentials to prove that a particular message did indeed originate from a specific vehicle.
The architecture of the system is designed from the start with privacy and security in mind. Certificates will be changed frequently, about 12 times per hour at irregular intervals, to prevent tracking by outsiders, according to Dr. Shulman. The messages will be signed, to verify that they weren’t changed between the time one vehicle sent it and another received it. “We’re using some standard cryptography, but we’re transforming it in a way to maintain privacy,” Dr. Shulman said.
Inside the security credential management system, a technological division of labor helps maintain security: one element creates a bundle of certificates, but doesn’t know which device will receive them. Another part of the system knows where the bundle is going, but doesn’t know which certificates are in the bundle. “Policies will be adopted to prevent the operation of these … parts by the same organization,” he said.
No personally identifiable information is contained in the certificates or in the basic safety messages, he said. And devices that are out of compliance or have been tampered with can be revoked.
Vehicles will communicate with one another using a modified version of Wi-Fi, called dedicated short range communications, which automakers including Ford and GM have been collaborating on for more than a decade. The technology works by letting vehicles exchange messages, up to 10 times per second, which contain basic safety data such as a car’s speed and position. For example, a driver who is about to make a left-hand turn at an intersection would receive a warning about an oncoming truck running a red light. Vehicles need to be within 1,000 feet of one another to receive the messages.
GM acknowledged that security of the radio frequency is a “significant issue,” but one that CAMP is addressing. GM plans to introduce vehicle-to-vehicle communications in its 2017 Cadillac CTS. “We’re confident that they can resolve this issue prior to the introduction of the technology with the 2017 Cadillac CTS,” a spokesman said.
During the first year that new vehicles are equipped with communications technology, the security credential management system will only need to scale to a few million equipped vehicles. That will require roughly 30 high-end servers and is comparable to the scale of existing IT systems. But 25 years after connected cars are mandated, there will be roughly 300 million equipped vehicles on the road, according to an August 2014 NHTSA report.
“When it is fully operational, this PKI system will be the largest in the world in terms of the number of certificates generated per year and the number of equipped devices,” Dr. Shulman said.
The sheer size of the system may make it difficult to manage. “Given the scale and size of this, it’s very complex architecture,” said Joshua Corman, CTO of Sonatype, a security firm, adding that problems occur frequently with much simpler systems such as email certificates in corporations. One challenge may be issuing and revoking certificates at such a large scale, said Mr. Corman who is also an automotive security specialist and has done work with a grassroots organization called I Am The Cavalry, which focuses on issues in which computer security intersects with public safety.
Automakers say that the potential safety advances of the technology outweigh the challenges. For example, vehicle-to-vehicle communications may help reduce deaths that occur in intersections by alerting drivers to an oncoming vehicle running a red light or stop sign, said Dr. Shulman. About 26% of 32,719 people killed in vehicle crashes in 2013 were killed in intersections, according to a December 2014 report from the NHTSA.

We published their first KMWorld Trend-Setting Products list nearly a decade-and-a-half ago because they wanted to bring some clarity to the sometimes elusive knowledge management needs of their subscribers. As they do with their KMWorld 100 Companies That Matter list, they established a judging panel of colleagues, market and technology analysts, KM theoreticians and practitioners, customers and a select few savvy users in a variety of disciplines to identify products that fulfill the ultimate goal of knowledge management—delivering the right information to the right people at the right time.
Throughout the yearlong collaborative judging process, they looked at more than 200 vendors, whose combined product lineups include more than 1,000 separate offerings. Although the standards they set for inclusion on any of KMWorld’s lists are high, they didn’t develop a formal, rigid set of criteria that needed to be met for inclusion on this year’s. As in years past, though, they all agreed that usability, flexibility, adoption rate and total cost of ownership were valuable components for inclusion. Their committee further agreed that each company/product listed holds the promise for the marketplace—even if the marketplace has yet to realize it.
In each and every case, the thoughtfulness and elegance of the software certainly warrants further investigation, and we’re confident that a number of products listed below will dramatically boost the productivity of any type of organization. You’ll note that some of the products have appeared on the list before—sometimes the market needs a little nudge. Nevertheless, the products and their developers share a focus on addressing customer needs. It’s always good to know that customers at every level of the value chain are the true benefactors of knowledge management.
Not all the offerings listed were launched in 2015; some have been around for a while, a testimony to the limber execution of their initial mission of adaptability. Others are relatively new, and their uniqueness points to (what they believe should be) their much wider adoption.
Are these the only trend-setting products on the market? No, of course not, but they do represent the ones best suited to meet the needs of KMWorld readers, and all have been designed with a clear understanding of customers’ needs.
The judging process has already started for next year’s list, and we’ll continue to welcome and take special note of unsolicited recommendations for list inclusion from customers actually deploying specific products. They encourage readers to send your thoughts and suggestions to the judging panel at firstname.lastname@example.org.
