Migrating MySQL to Oracle Part I | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

    1. Introduction

As you might imagine, migrating a database and its attendant applications is no small affair.  Throw into the mix a switch of database platform, and you certainly have your hands full.  In this two part article, we'll be discussing all of the steps involved in this process, questions to ask yourself, what to watch out for, and how to perform the whole thing within a limited window of downtime.  At the end, we'll go over the process of "upgrading" your skills, be it through books and publications, forums, training, or certification.

    2. Assessment of Migration Plan

Before you do anything, you will need to put together a plan or outline of what's to be done.  I know, I know, no one likes to write documentation.  But it's an important step because on the tech side, it will force you to determine what needs to be done, and on the management side, it will illustrate step-by-step the process, so they can see the complexity, consider business impact, cost of requisite systems, resources required to execute the migration, and overall timeframe.

What should this assessment include specifically?  Well first, you should investigate what version of MySQL you're using currently.  Do a review of what features you're using, such as datatypes (numeric, character, enumerated, etc), what type of storage engines you're using such as MyISAM, Innodb, and so on.  Consider the index types you're using, and additional features such as Views and Triggers that may be in use inside your database.  Also, audit the stored procedures you have in your database, as these will need to be rewritten.  Consider MySQL replication carefully as well.  If it is setup for the whole db, it will match more closely to Oracle's standby database or DataGuard feature, whereas if you're using table by table replication with the wildcard syntax in your my.cnf file, this will more likely be done using materialized views (formerly called snapshots) in Oracle.

On the Oracle side, you'll need to look of course at the version you'll be running, how the various MySQL datatypes, and objects map into Oracle.  Consider the autoincrement attribute on primary keys.  Although Oracle does have sequences, sequences differ slightly from how autoincrement works in MySQL.  There is no guarantee of consecutive numbers, for instance.  Therefore, you may experience gaps in your key values based on how Oracle caches sequences.  Consider how this might affect your application’s behavior.  Although not directly part of the migration process, you'll need to consider how you want to backup your Oracle systems as well.  The export facility fairly closely matches mysqldump on the MySQL side, and RMAN of course provides all the hotbackup functionality you might find in utilities like innobackup or the underlying ibbackup available with MySQL.

In your assessment document, make a note of all of these findings, and be as thorough as possible.  The more you do the due diligence now, the fewer gotchas you'll have later on in the process.

    3. Development Migration and Setup

    3a. Preparation

Preparation will involve setting up your development environment.  That includes requisitioning the right hardware, setup at the data center, installation of Oracle software, and building your starter database.  Consider Oracle's best practices when doing this setup, such as using RAID 10 for your underlying disk storage, layout your redologs, allocate sufficient system and sysaux tablespace and so on.  You'll also want to consider the character set of your new database.  Beware of US7ASCII as it can limit you from European and accented characters.  Better to choose WE8ISO8859P1.  If you may be using Asian characters in your database, you'll have to look into the National Language Services (NLS) features of Oracle, and consider multi-byte character sets.  You'll also create tablespaces for data and index.  Consider the size of your source objects.  At the filesystem you can use "du -sm dir_name" of your data directory.  Give yourself another 25-50% space to make room for growth.

    3b. Database Structure Migration

On the MySQL side, dumping the structure of a database (which becomes a schema in Oracle) you can do the following:

    $ mysqldump --no-data my_db_name > my_db_name.mysql

Because of slight differences in syntax,  you cannot run this script as-is in Oracle.   What you can do is rewrite these CREATE TABLE and CREATE INDEX statements yourself.  Obviously if there are huge numbers of objects in your database, you'll want to consider an automated way to do this.  We'll discuss Oracle's Migration Workbench in part II of this article, but for now they recommend running through the objects one by one.  This will also provide a sort of inventory of objects in your database, and force you to be thorough and pour through them all in turn.  It will also be prudent to get developers involved in this process.  By running through the tables and objects to change their syntax, they will on the one hand brush up, or get up to speed on Oracle syntax, and on the other, really comb through the objects to consider what changes might be required in their application code.

Ultimately, application changes will be a large part of porting to a new database engine, no matter how diligent your developers may have been in writing database independent code.  So again, this manual process will force a fine tooth comb upon the intricacies of your database.

    4. Conclusion

Yes, migration of a database application to a new platform like Oracle is no simple task, but it can be done, and with proper preparation, it can be managed.  Do a proper assessment of your current systems before any systems setup, and review the time, hardware, software, and people requirements with management before moving forward.

In part II of this article, we'll discuss moving the actual data from production, review Oracle's Migration Workbench which may save you some time, and discuss potential application issues, and challenges.  We'll then review the whole process, and carefully plan the final migration of your production database and applications.

Eight Sound Reasons Not to Use MySQL | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

In the time I've served managing a technical consulting firm, I've heard my share of excuses for not using MySQL. While many of these reasons were based on misconception, there are a number of sound reasons not to use MySQL. These will, of course, vary from one situation to the next, but in each context, I suggest that rather than rely on the opinion of a jaded database administrator (DBA), the rejection of any database technology should stick to the legitimate reasons. To that end, in this article I outline eight sound reasons not to use MySQL.

First, the reasons not to use a given technology are not of the same nature as the reasons to use it. Often the reasons to avoid something are more compelling. They might need several reasons to actually use the technology, but it may take just one to stop us in their tracks. The selection of software is one such decision; a single reason is almost never adequate to trigger an affirmative decision, but a single strong negative overrules a dozen good positive factors.

Five Compelling Reasons to Use MySQL

While there is a long list of relational database management systems (RDBMSes) from which to choose, I restrict comparisons to a few of the most common. Many technical comparisons exist, although comprehensive recent ones are fewer in number. Here they concern ourselves with the "big-picture" reasons.

    MySQL Uses the GPL

The biggest one first. This isn't the time or place for a GNU General Public License (GPL) flame war and typically, neither is the selection of database technology. Clearly a GPL license is a plus for many, but for some environments, GPL'd software is a non-starter. In these situations, if the BSD license of PostgreSQL is still too "open," a commercial license is preferred.

    MySQL Doesn't Use the GPL

In some instances, MySQL is non-free, and the GPL may not serve those situations well. If you want to distribute the license for the database along with your own project, your project must either be licensed under a similar compliant license, or you must pay for a commercial license. If this factor changes the way that your software is distributed, you'll need to cope with the added burden of supporting your product on multiple versions or configurations of MySQL, or (if it otherwise increases the cost to the end user) there may be an undesirable bottom-line impact caused by MySQL's use. In these circumstances, some software distributors may tend to opt for an alternative such as PostgreSQL under the BSD license.

    Integration With an Existing Environment

I know of one large IT shop that has site licenses for Oracle and Sybase, and a number of specific licenses for MS-SQL Server. In this shop, the MS-SQL instances are largely the result of the ignorant department staff who don't know they paid for site licenses for other databases. The addition of MySQL (or any other database) is an unwise idea in this context, given that the DBAs already have enough environments to deal with. In situations with pre-existing database environments, it is pretty much axiomatic that the management burden is diminished if a common platform can be maintained. Further, if the company already owns licenses to a proprietary system, one of MySQL's major strong points is negated.

    Product Maturity

By way of comparison, Oracle will hit the 30th anniversary of its first product shipment in 2009, at which point MySQL will not yet have hit half that distance from its first release. For its part, Microsoft SQL Server is only a couple of years older than MySQL, but its first release was based on Sybase, which was at that time six years past its first release. As for the other notable open-source database, PostgreSQL will in 2009 hit the 20-year mark from its first release. While MySQL is not the newest database on the market, there are older, more established alternatives—and for many, that's reason enough. To be fair, this is in my view not a particularly strong reason to opt against MySQL, but at the same time, I'd be hard-pressed to tell a conservative IT manager making a platform decision for a mission-critical application based on this factor that he's doing the wrong thing.

    Feature Set Maturity

While some are tempted to compile an overview feature comparison of MySQL versus other systems to use as an authoritative decision-making tool, in many respects this is a mug's game. As new software releases or patches are issued by any of the vendors, the list becomes rapidly outdated. Further, features that are important to some applications have no relevance to others, such that "10 percent more features" is really a measure of no consequence. What does matter is whether the feature set at the time of release matches the requirements, or matches closely enough.

Sometimes, you can compensate for missing features with workarounds, such as a join instead of a subquery in MySQL prior to version 4.1. Most of the required features for an RDBMS are firmly in place with the release of MySQL 5.0, but they can legitimately consider the maturity of some of these features as a possible reason to shy away from MySQL. For example, the lack of views, triggers and stored procedures has historically been the major criticism of MySQL. These have all been supported by MySQL for a year or so now, but by comparison, they have been features for about 10 years in most competing RDBMSes.

Sure, the development cycle from the MySQL team is, in many ways, impressive. However, if the user's temperament is particularly gun-shy toward new technology, the longer-supported feature is the more certain bet. In this case, these three major features are still relatively recent additions. Even as of MySQL 5.0, ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) consistency is not guaranteed in the case of a crash when some kinds of stored procedures or functions are used to modify the database. (See Binary Logging of Stored Routines and Triggers.)

    Availability of Certification

Some IT shops love certification. While MySQL does have a certification training program, its training availability is not nearly as widespread as for, say, Oracle or MS-SQL Server. In broad terms, even if IT staff with MySQL are relatively easy to come by, certification or ongoing training remains less so, with fewer third-party training sources available. For larger IT shops, the enterprise experience that typically follows the commercial database systems is also desirable, while some people with MySQL experience may have less depth.

A related issue is the availability of qualified third-party support. While the availability of support services directly from the vendor mitigates the issue, to some degree, the same factors apply if strong local on-site support is required from a third party.

    Corporate Considerations

Oracle, Sybase and Microsoft are all publicly traded companies. Whatever one might say about the strength of MySQL's backers, the fact that the company is not publicly traded means the financials are not required by law to be a matter of public record. At the risk of being accused of spreading FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt), the relative transparency of a publicly traded company (rightly or wrongly) provides certainty, stability and security to some IT managers and those to whom they report. The old saying about nobody ever being fired for buying IBM applies here (even if IBM recently decided to start selling MySQL); dealing with a large reputable corporate entity does tend to help some people sleep at night, be they investors, PHBs (Dilbert reference: Pointy-Haired Bosses) or experienced IT managers.

    Perception of Scalability

I've titled this last reason carefully. There is a fairly consistent perception among many industry professionals that MySQL doesn't scale well. This matter is debated by some, though most debates tend to munge the difference between scaling up and scaling out (vertical vs. horizontal). MySQL discusses scaling out more than scaling up, but lists scalability as one of the top reasons for using MySQL.

One trend I have observed but for which I have no hard data is that formally trained DBAs tend to prefer a proprietary RDBMS such as (most commonly) Oracle. I suspect that those with formal training and experience as a DBA (rather than as a software developer) tend to have a bias toward proprietary systems. In a larger environment with a defined role for a DBA (as opposed to a part-time consultant or someone doing double-duty as a developer), MySQL is likely to find less favor for this reason. Whether the scalability of MySQL is a real or imagined criticism becomes irrelevant at precisely this stage. Barring a strong reason to override this factor, when you have talented resources at your disposal, you want to give them the tools with which they are most comfortable and can get the most mileage. If your staff DBA with 15-plus years' experience wants Oracle and it's in the budget, do it; this approach always pays off in the long run.

There comes a point when comparing stable, mature, feature-rich products that one tends to stop obsessing about which one is "better" in an absolute sense. In place of this question is one that requires more insight: which one is more appropriate to a given situation. I think the leading RDBMSes have all reached this point now, including MySQL. The question of when this occurred may be open to some, and those few are welcome to conduct a debate on the matter. Suffice to say that this is the landscape of today, and with no slight to any of the leading systems, there are specific times to opt against the use of each. In the case of MySQL, I believe we've been able to cover some of the strongest ones—those that are not simply one version-release away from becoming outdated.

Now that you've read the reasons not to choose MySQL, be sure to read the alternate view: Five Compelling Reasons to Use MySQL.

Difference between SQL and MySQL | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

We have earlier seen the difference between SQL and NoSQL. Now in this post, I will tell you the basic difference between SQL and MySQL. Most people find it hard to wrap their head around SQL and MySQL, and you might be one of those. There are books about SQL everywhere, and for a good reason! Reading these books has helped me in differentiating both the concepts, viz. SQL and MySQL.

To begin with, let us explain you both technologies, and this is how they are defined:

SQL stands for Structured Query Language. It’s a standard language for accessing and manipulating databases. MySQL is a database management system, like SQL Server, Oracle, Informix, Postgres, etc. MySQL is an RDMS (Relational Database Management System).

When considering a utility for data management the two most popular choices are MySQL and SQL Server. Both are efficient at keeping your data organized and readily available through a user interface. Both technologies have the concept of the schema (that is table storage) for data storage.

SQL is a language.  Specifically, the “Structured Query Language” Now it would be better if they start differentiating the topic as the difference between SQL server and MySQL and take them point by point.

    SQL Server and MySQL Vendors:

The MySQL development project has made its source code available under the terms of the GNU General Public License, as well as under a variety of proprietary agreements. MySQL was owned and sponsored by a single for-profit firm, the Swedish company MySQL AB, now owned by Oracle Corporation.

SQL server is owned by Microsoft and is typically referred as Microsoft SQL Server. It has a long history of releases, and it is updated often adding all latest trends and technologies to it thus making it one of the trusted database applications today.

    Strengths: SQL Server and MySQL

To give a better idea of the differences in MySQL and SQL Server -MySQL is geared more toward selecting data so it can be displayed, updated and saved again. MySQL is weaker in the areas of inserting and deleting data. But it is an excellent choice, for data storage and referencing data.

Here are some specific technical differences in MySQL and SQL Server when it comes down to the ANSI SQL standard: Features like stored procedures, triggers, views, and cursors became a part of the MySQL database server in MySQL version 5.0 and still you won’t find a rich feature set in terms of development functions and capabilities. However MySQL’s stored code-objects are close to ANSI standards, but again, they don’t have the breadth and depth of T-SQL, Microsoft and Sybase’s proprietary extension to SQL.

    Security: SQL Server and MySQL

Security is a major concern for data management. Both technologies that are MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server are EC2 complaint and make sure that they have adequate security support for building government applications.  Going down the line, Microsoft’s SQL Server leads the way in offering all-around security features, as Microsoft’s Baseline Security Analyzer helps administrators ensure that the SQL Server installation is up to date. MySQL has no such tool to do so.

    Support: SQL Server and MySQL

Both SQL server and MySQL has the support from their respective vendors both in free and paid form. MySQL, as they know, is now a subsidiary of Oracle which is a Capability Maturity Model (CMM) level 5 company and offers support via technical representatives and “Virtual MySQL DBA Assistant”.

On the other hand, Microsoft has been pioneering SQL server over the years and assured assistance on its SQL database and Cloud storage. Furthermore, a free Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) makes it easy to migrate data from Oracle, Microsoft Access, MySQL, and Sybase to SQL Server.

    Conclusion: MySQL vs SQL Server

As they have seen the difference between SQL Server and MySQL, the picture is now almost clear. It all comes down to your needs, how much secure, scalable and efficient database you want. From most points, it is clear that Microsoft’s SQL Server provides some extra features over MySQL and is more trusted in the development market.
