IBM's Tivoli Storage manager (TSM) application has protected enterprise records for 20 years and is an immense market share player and an business standard within the backup, recuperation, and disaster recovery area. IBM's improvements in this enviornment are neatly conventional and recognized throughout the IT industry because the "go to" answer for big data, database backup, recuperation, and records resiliency.
Gartner posted its 2014 Magic Quadrant for commercial enterprise Backup utility and integrated home equipment (June sixteen, 2014), acknowledging that IBM's work to practice analytics to information lower back-up and storage administration makes it possible for groups to convey extra clever, world data availability.
These points allow employees and consumers to entry the guidance they need, when they want it. constructing on the recent launch of software-described storage items, IBM continues to assist companies construct smarter the way to use their facts to its fullest talents.
The 2014 Gartner Magic Quadrant for commercial enterprise Backup utility and integrated appliances record included here vital findings that determine shifts happening in records backup requirements:
To additional explore IBM's place, I spoke with Ian Smith, IBM's Director of Storage utility, to find out why IBM is a transparent chief in the backup and recuperation software house.
"I suppose IBM has moved ahead, while their competitors has stagnated. they have now persevered to make investments and analysis in backup and restoration. Gartner acknowledges their innovation and vision in this house." Ian Smith, Director of Storage software, IBM.
Mr. Smith gave here facets to accept as true with when searching for a backup and recovery solution or when taking into account a switch to a brand new backup/recovery software seller.
There are a lot of claims in this house about saving funds and decreasing TCO. youngsters, agree with that IBM has taken the excessive charge out of TSM with the aid of decreasing the volume of required hardware, with the aid of cutting back installation time from 5 days to 5 minutes, and by reducing management frustration by means of redesigning the management interface; there is proof of decrease TCO with a Tivoli Storage manager software answer.
TSM Entry is an entry-degree backup and restoration product for small to medium-sized companies that gives you that identical commercial enterprise backup capacity as its general counterpart. TSM Entry is a similar utility, but with out the scalability — designed principally for smaller environments. This entry-degree product additionally features a big license charge savings as well to additional support SMBs with adoption.
in the event you don't wish to examine the whole document, beneath is IBM's entry from the 2014 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Backup/restoration software report.
IBM's Tivoli Storage supervisor (TSM) presents very extensive platform support across many OSs, file programs and applications. IBM has over 23,000, predominantly giant business customers for TSM, and has partnerships with MSPs to offer recuperation functions. whereas IBM has leveraged its gigantic direct earnings drive, the portfolio generates the majority of its revenue from international enterprise partners.
valued clientele cite the portfolio's capacity to scale to deal with very massive recovery necessities, and the dealer's service and aid proceed to receive excessive marks. via its acquisition of Butterfly application, IBM now claims to have profiled over 2,000PB of backup environments working competitive options, and states that, average, TSM has validated 53 p.c reduce total can charge of ownership (TCO) over the competitors.
IBM is getting more vocal with its advertising and messaging, and has extended its licensing alternate options, providing processor cost unit (PVU) and back-end terabyte capacity licensing components, and is in beta now with a entrance-conclusion terabyte scheme that can be offered later in 2014.
in the newest edition 7 liberate, TSM expanded scalability with as much as 10x growth of every day ingest of deduplicated and replicated statistics. The IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy manager picture help that included IBM and NetApp has been more suitable to guide EMC VNX, Symmetrix VMAX and Symmetrix DMX, and IBM has a road map for broadening its third-celebration array aid. TSM for virtual Environments has been extended to offer a whole lot extra capacity, including VM immediate entry and fix, as well as merchandise-degree healing for exchange and SQL Server.
In 2Q14, a brand new product became released, TSM Entry, which protects up to 50 home windows and Linux servers. while TSM presents many compelling advantages, the perceived administrative challenge of managing the product has been an issue for a long time; youngsters, the TSM Operations middle GUI, launched in 2Q13, has a multi-unlock plan to offer more up to date management capabilities, with the third free up deliberate for later this year.Strengths
IBM closing week unveiled a brand new Power7-based disk array called the device Storage DS8870 that promises up to three times the I/O as its previous flagship storage enviornment community (SAN) array. huge Blue’s huge fall product launch additionally introduced a brand new LTO6 tape force that guarantees a significant upgrade in backup throughput in comparison to older LTO5 drives. a brand new release of the Storwize V7000 midrange SAN management software and a new SmartCloud storage offering round out the storage announcements.
the new DS8870 replaces the DS8800 at the right of IBM’s SAN heap, and whereas both arrays look very identical from the outside, the internals were upgraded considerably.
The biggest enhancement comes from the use of Power7 sockets loaded up with 4, eight, or sixteen processor cores in the commercial enterprise configurations, and two-core Power7 processors in the new lower can charge “enterprise class” configurations. The sixteen-core configurations (that’s a two-socket energy methods desktop) help increase the throughput of the DS8870 by means of as much as three times compared to the fastest DS8800, which launched two years ago with two dual-core Power6+ processors. IBM says performance of each sequential read and sequential write throughputs within the DS8870 has accelerated by using greater than 60 p.c over the DS8800.
The DS8870 has already claimed a appropriate efficiency mark with the SPC-2 benchmark on the Storage efficiency Council. The SPC-2 benchmark effect checks efficiency throughout three kinds of workloads, including enormous file processing, tremendous database query, and video on demand, with a 70TB (31TB usable), RAID-5 blanketed laptop that can charge just over $2 million. The aggregate of those exams display a performance score of 15,423.66 MBPS and a cost efficiency of $131.21.
practically all the throughput improvement is due to the faster processor complicated (available in a single- and two-method configurations), when you consider that none of the other components have modified tons, with the exception of memory (now as much as 1TB, a 266 p.c improvement). The number of drives you could fit into the DS8870 model 961 (the bottom unit) continues to be 240. Denser drives, youngsters, increase the entire usable skill from 144TB to 216TB. IBM is the usage of the same 8Gb/sec Fibre Channel/FICON adapters in the DS8870, and you may still join eight of them.
IBM has improved the number of growth contraptions (DS8870 mannequin 96E) that can connect to the base SAN array; it now helps up to 3 expansion instruments, in comparison to two prior to now. a completely equipped, top-of-the-line DS8870 with three growth gadgets, 16 FC/FICON adapters, and 1TB of memory will deliver 1.4PB of actual ability when the use of 1,536 of the 10KRPM 900GB SAS drives, or up to 2.3PB when the use of 768 of the 7,200 RPM 3TB nearline SAS disk drives.
purchasers can combine and fit drives within the DS8870 to supply them the most effective configuration for coping with sizzling, heat, or bloodless facts. In specific, IBM encourages the use of super-quickly 400GB SSDs to address the most well-liked facts. other drives offered encompass a pair of 15K RPM SAS drives in 146GB and 300GB configurations, or 600GB 10K RPM SAS drives. all the drives assist RAID-5, RAID 6, and RAID-10, except for the SSDs, which handiest support RAID-5. the use of absolutely self-encrypting drives with the DS8870 is also new. the entire drives supported on the new array will self-encrypt, that allows you to increase security, IBM says. administration of the encryption is handled through the Tivoli Key Lifecycle manager software product.
IBM’s new “enterprise category” configuration isn’t as big or speedy, and lacks some aspects, however’s much less costly and is wholly upgradeable to the “commercial enterprise type” configuration. The enterprise type unit promises as much as 129 TB of actual means across 144 drives. it's in line with a single Power7 processor with two cores activated, has 32GB of reminiscence, 16GB of cache, and presents four FC/FICON adapters. You can not attach an expansion unit to the company class SAN, and it additionally lacks the advanced reproduction features and i/O precedence manager utility that clients of the large storage dog can use.
The DS8870, which becomes accessible on October 19, facets a few not obligatory utility components that can also be brought, together with features akin to element-in-Time replica, FlashCopy, Metro reflect, global reflect, and z/OS global replicate functions. There’s also a new Dynamic volume expansion function as a way to boost the measurement of storage volumes to adapt to improved software storage requirements, with out requiring any downtime. It’s supported out-of-the-container with AIX and z/OS servers; IBM says other platforms can also assist it with some work. For extra tips (and a 14-page price ebook!) see IBM united states Hardware Announcement 112-154.
New LTO6 force
IBM ultimately shipped its new LTO6 pressure, the system Storage TS1060, which it has been readying seeing that July. the new TS1060 may also be used within the TS3500 tape library.
IBM’s new LTO6 pressure offers a optimum records transfer rate of a hundred and sixty MB/sec, up from one hundred forty MB/sec with LTO5 apparatus. complete means with the LTO6 media has accelerated to 2.5TB (native) or 6.25TB with 2:5 to 1 compression. That compares with the LTO5 media, which provided 1.5TB of native capacity, and 3TB with 2 to 1 compression.
The TS1060 is designed to mount within the TS3500 Tape Library mannequin L53 or D53, and in 3584 Tape Library fashions L52, L32, D52, or D32. it really works with all servers that may tackle Fibre Channel interfaces, including IBM i servers. listing cost for the TS1060 is $25,855. For greater information, see the IBM united states Hardware Announcement 112-162.
Storwize and SmartCloud
meanwhile, IBM has unveiled a brand new unencumber of the software powering its Storwize midrange SAN choices. IBM offers two flavors of the Storwize techniques, including the undeniable vanilla Storwize V7000, which supports block workloads, and the Storwize V7000 Unified, which consolidates block and file workloads into a single equipment.
The big information with Storwize V7000 Unified edition 1.4, which becomes available November 9, is that it allows for users of the plain vanilla Storwize V7000 block techniques to upgrade to Storwize V7000 Unified programs. this can enable them to consolidate their storage workloads, and take capabilities of new features, just like the real-time compression characteristic that IBM has been speaking so an awful lot about.
IBM is also touting the capacity to make use of put in force Converged superior Ethernet (CEE) networks the usage of the Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol, which allows Storwize V7000 Unified systems to connect with a wide range of other methods, including simple vanilla Storwize V7000s for clustering, or to different servers. finally, Storwize V7000 Unified can now authenticate towards a local server, putting off the deserve to connect to corporate listing servers. find extra data at IBM united states application Announcement 212-369.
No large announcement day is finished with out some mention of “the cloud,” and that brings us to IBM SmartCloud digital Storage middle V5.1. The SmartCloud VSC, in case you haven’t heard of it before, “removes the physicality of storage, as well as the complexity linked to managing multivendor infrastructures,” in response to IBM. if you guessed that that means it offers a superset of performance present in IBM Tivoli Storage productiveness center, plus the virtualization, remote-mirroring and FlashCopy capabilities of IBM system Storage SAN extent Controller (SVC) and add in all of the capabilities of IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy manager, then provide yourself a hand.
The big information with SmartCloud VSC 5.1 is that it supports the Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol, which makes it possible for it to connect with, and manage, facts saved in other arrays, such as the aforementioned Storwize V7000 Unified. It also gives automated discovering and provisioning of file techniques kept on Storwize V7000 Unified and the vastly scalable, 10GE-connected Scale Out network connected Storage (SONAS) arrays. at last, it contains a brand new GUI and Cognos-primarily based reports. in response to IBM united states application Announcement 212-185, the SmartCloud VSC 5.1 will work with older equipment i servers, however handiest in the event that they’re operating AIX. windows, Linux, and Unix methods are additionally supported.

IBM last week unveiled a new Power7-based disk array called the System Storage DS8870 that delivers up to three times the I/O as its previous flagship storage area network (SAN) array. Big Blue’s big fall product launch also brought a new LTO6 tape drive that promises a significant upgrade in backup throughput compared to older LTO5 drives. A new release of the Storwize V7000 midrange SAN management software and a new SmartCloud storage offering round out the storage announcements.
The new DS8870 replaces the DS8800 at the top of IBM’s SAN heap, and while the two arrays look very similar from the outside, the internals have been upgraded substantially.
The biggest enhancement comes from the use of Power7 sockets loaded up with four, eight, or 16 processor cores in the enterprise configurations, and two-core Power7 processors in the new lower cost “business class” configurations. The 16-core configurations (that’s a two-socket Power Systems machine) help boost the throughput of the DS8870 by up to three times compared to the fastest DS8800, which launched two years ago with two dual-core Power6+ processors. IBM says performance of both sequential read and sequential write throughputs in the DS8870 has increased by more than 60 percent over the DS8800.
The DS8870 has already claimed a top performance mark with the SPC-2 benchmark at the Storage Performance Council. The SPC-2 benchmark result tests performance across three types of workloads, including large file processing, large database query, and video on demand, with a 70TB (31TB usable), RAID-5 protected machine that cost just over $2 million. The aggregate of these tests show a performance rating of 15,423.66 MBPS and a price performance of $131.21.
Nearly all of the throughput improvement is due to the faster processor complex (available in one- and two-way configurations), since none of the other components have changed much, with the exception of memory (now up to 1TB, a 266 percent improvement). The number of drives you can fit into the DS8870 Model 961 (the base unit) is still 240. Denser drives, however, boost the total usable capacity from 144TB to 216TB. IBM is using the same 8Gb/sec Fibre Channel/FICON adapters in the DS8870, and you can still connect eight of them.
IBM has expanded the number of expansion units (DS8870 Model 96E) that can connect to the base SAN array; it now supports up to three expansion units, compared to two previously. A fully outfitted, top-of-the-line DS8870 with three expansion units, 16 FC/FICON adapters, and 1TB of memory will provide 1.4PB of physical capacity when using 1,536 of the 10KRPM 900GB SAS drives, or up to 2.3PB when using 768 of the 7,200 RPM 3TB nearline SAS disk drives.
Customers can mix and match drives in the DS8870 to give them the optimal configuration for handling hot, warm, or cold data. In particular, IBM encourages the use of super-fast 400GB SSDs to handle the hottest data. Other drives offered include a pair of 15K RPM SAS drives in 146GB and 300GB configurations, or 600GB 10K RPM SAS drives. All of the drives support RAID-5, RAID 6, and RAID-10, with the exception of the SSDs, which only support RAID-5. The use of fully self-encrypting drives with the DS8870 is also new. All of the drives supported on the new array will self-encrypt, which will boost security, IBM says. Management of the encryption is handled through the Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager software product.
IBM’s new “business class” configuration isn’t as big or fast, and lacks some features, but it’s less expensive and is fully upgradeable to the “enterprise class” configuration. The business class unit delivers up to 129 TB of physical capacity across 144 drives. It is based on a single Power7 processor with two cores activated, has 32GB of memory, 16GB of cache, and offers four FC/FICON adapters. You cannot attach an expansion unit to the business class SAN, and it also lacks the advanced copy services and I/O Priority Manager software that users of the big storage dog can use.
The DS8870, which becomes available on October 19, features a number of optional software components that can be added, including features such as Point-in-Time Copy, FlashCopy, Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, and z/OS Global Mirror functions. There’s also a new Dynamic Volume Expansion function that will boost the size of storage volumes to adapt to increased application storage requirements, without requiring any downtime. It’s supported out-of-the-box with AIX and z/OS servers; IBM says other platforms can also support it with some work. For more information (and a 14-page price guide!) see IBM United States Hardware Announcement 112-154.
New LTO6 Drive
IBM finally shipped its new LTO6 drive, the System Storage TS1060, which it has been readying since July. The new TS1060 can be used in the TS3500 tape library.
IBM’s new LTO6 drive offers a maximum data transfer rate of 160 MB/sec, up from 140 MB/sec with LTO5 gear. Total capacity with the LTO6 media has increased to 2.5TB (native) or 6.25TB with 2:5 to 1 compression. That compares with the LTO5 media, which offered 1.5TB of native capacity, and 3TB with 2 to 1 compression.
The TS1060 is designed to mount in the TS3500 Tape Library Model L53 or D53, and in 3584 Tape Library Models L52, L32, D52, or D32. It works with all servers that can handle Fibre Channel interfaces, including IBM i servers. List price for the TS1060 is $25,855. For more information, see the IBM United States Hardware Announcement 112-162.
Storwize and SmartCloud
Meanwhile, IBM has unveiled a new release of the software powering its Storwize midrange SAN offerings. IBM offers two flavors of the Storwize systems, including the plain vanilla Storwize V7000, which supports block workloads, and the Storwize V7000 Unified, which consolidates block and file workloads into a single system.
The big news with Storwize V7000 Unified version 1.4, which becomes available November 9, is that it allows users of the plain vanilla Storwize V7000 block systems to upgrade to Storwize V7000 Unified systems. This will allow them to consolidate their storage workloads, and take advantage of new functions, like the real-time compression function that IBM has been talking so much about.
IBM is also touting the capability to use implement Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) networks using the Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol, which allows Storwize V7000 Unified systems to connect to a wide range of other systems, including plain vanilla Storwize V7000s for clustering, or to other servers. Finally, Storwize V7000 Unified can now authenticate against a local server, eliminating the need to connect to corporate directory servers. Find more info at IBM United States Software Announcement 212-369.
No big announcement day is complete without some mention of “the cloud,” and that brings us to IBM SmartCloud Virtual Storage Center V5.1. The SmartCloud VSC, if you haven’t heard of it before, “removes the physicality of storage, as well as the complexity associated with managing multivendor infrastructures,” according to IBM. If you guessed that that means it provides a superset of functionality found in IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center, plus the virtualization, remote-mirroring and FlashCopy capabilities of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and add in all the capabilities of IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager, then give yourself a hand.
The big news with SmartCloud VSC 5.1 is that it supports the Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol, which allows it to connect to, and manage, data stored in other arrays, such as the aforementioned Storwize V7000 Unified. It also provides automated discovering and provisioning of file systems stored on Storwize V7000 Unified and the massively scalable, 10GE-attached Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) arrays. Finally, it includes a new GUI and Cognos-based reports. According to IBM United States Software Announcement 212-185, the SmartCloud VSC 5.1 will work with older System i servers, but only if they’re running AIX. Windows, Linux, and Unix systems are also supported.

Internet Services- New IBM Smarter Storage approach provides for greater performance, efficiencies
- Real-time Compression, LTFS management, and Tivoli upgrades lift storage systems
- IBM makes technical computing more accessible to enterprise customers
- IBM Platform Computing software enables technical computing systems to deliver faster results
ARMONK, N.Y. - IBM (NYSE: IBM) today accelerated its Smarter Computing initiative by announcing a broad array of performance and efficiency enhancements to its storage and technical computing systems - the engines of Big Data.
As part of its ongoing Smarter Computing effort, IBM today announced a new strategic approach to designing and managing storage infrastructures with greater automation and intelligence, as well as significant performance enhancements to several key storage systems and the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center suite. At the same time, the company announced its first offerings that incorporate software from IBM's acquisition of Platform Computing earlier this year. These offerings are intended to help a broader set of enterprise customers use technical computing to achieve faster results with applications that require substantial computing resources to process growing volumes of data.
"Enterprises are dealing with data that is increasing exponentially in both size and complexity," said Rod Adkins, senior vice president of IBM Systems & Technology Group. "The enhanced systems and storage solutions we're announcing today have the performance, efficiency and intelligence to handle this Big Data. This is smarter computing that allows their clients to organize and analyze their data to better understand and serve their customers."
IBM Smarter Storage for Smarter Computing
Constructing and evolving storage infrastructures to better respond to constant social, economic, and business change is critical to the long-term viability of every organization. To do it right, they need a smarter approach to storage - an approach that exploits automated intelligence to increase the efficiency, utilization, and performance of storage systems while lowering costs.
According to a survey of more than 300 global CIOs conducted by IBM and IDC, the most efficient companies have been able to spend more than 50 percent on new projects that were transformative to their business.
By implementing techniques such as virtualization, de-duplication, automated tiering and cataloging, IT leaders are able to reduce the amount of time their architects spend provisioning storage by up to 50 percent as well as reduce the cost by up to 20 percent.
With more than 256 petabytes of client data managed, IBM has been building a portfolio of products and technologies for the past several years toward this end and today announced a formal approach behind it called IBM Smarter Storage. With this approach, customers are able to architect storage infrastructures that leverage such leading edge technologies as Real-time Compression and automated tiering to help get more performance out of their systems, faster and for less cost.
To drive this initiative further, IBM is announcing enhancements to a several key products. For example, it is adding Real-time Compression to IBM Storwize V7000, as well as to the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC), the company's industry-leading storage virtualization system.
Unlike traditional storage systems that compress only "low activity" data, or data not frequently accessed, Real-time Compression on the Storwize V7000 and SVC systems compresses active data by as much as 80 percent, increasing total effective storage capacity by up to five times.(1) In addition to Real-time Compression, IBM also added four-way clustering support for Storwize V7000 block systems that can double the maximum system capacity to 960 drives or 1.4 petabytes.
"From the move to electronic records to the ballooning sizes of medical images, storage in medical centers as large as ours, is rapidly becoming ground zero for Big Data," said Rick Haverty, director of information systems division at the University of Rochester Medical Center. "IBM has recognized the need to start approaching the management of the growing data volumes in a strategic, smarter way, through built-in intelligence, automation, and the cloud, to gain greater performance, reliability and better economics."
IBM added efficiency and performance boosts to several other systems as well, including:
- IBM System Storage DS3500, designed for small and mid-sizedorganizations and DCS3700, designed with high density for highperformance computing environments, now feature Enhanced FlashCopycapabilities that result in 50 percent more snapshots, designed to speedup backups; and thin provisioning, which helps increase utilization ofdisk storage while lowering storage costs by reserving unused pools ofstorage for applications on an as-needed basis;
- IBM Tape System Library Manager (TSLM) is new software that expands andcan simplify the use of IBM TS3500 tape libraries by providing customersa single, consolidated view of multiple libraries. The TSLM works withmultiple generations of enterprise and LTO-based drives and media tostore data into a single reservoir of tape that can be managed from acentral point through IBM Tivoli Storage Manager;
- IBM Linear Tape File System (LTFS) Storage Manager is new software thatprovides lifecycle management of multimedia files, such as large videofiles, to customers using IBM LTO 5 tape libraries and IBM's LTFSLibrary Edition. As a result, video archive licensing costs can bedramatically lowered, as well as video tape cartridge costs.
- New enhancements to the IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center (TPC)suite will enable organizations to better manage big data storagerequirements. With a new web-based user interface, TPC can radicallychange the way IT managers view and manage their storageinfrastructures. Also new to TPC is the integration of IBM Cognos, whichprovides intuitive reporting and modelling that can enable customers toeasily create high-quality ad hoc and customized reports for betterdecision making. TPC offers simplified packaging that providescomprehensive management, discovery, configuration, performance andreplication in a single license.
In addition to these new enhancements, IBM will advance the Smarter Storage approach further in the future when it announces plans to extend its IBM Easy Tier capabilities to direct-attached, server-based SSDs to help customers coordinate data migration between their disk systems and servers. IBM Easy Tier automatically moves data to the most appropriate storage, including multiple tiers of disk and SSD, based on policy and activity.
IBM Strengthens Technical Computing Portfolio for Enterprise Clients
