WebSphere Commerce Server comes to IBM i

IBM closing week introduced that its flagship e-commerce utility equipment, WebSphere Commerce edition 7.0, will now run natively on the IBM i 6.1 and seven.1 working methods. The flow presents IBM i valued clientele three new e-commerce product alternatives for internet hosting company-to-consumer (B2C) and company-to-company (B2B) e-commerce websites on their gadget i or energy methods servers.

WebSphere Commerce is a respected household of products that permits agencies of all sizes to install and manage their own customized e-commerce storefronts on the around the world internet. The utility, which has received kudos from Gartner and AMR analysis, comes with pre-packaged and integrated capabilities, including search engines like google and yahoo, browsing carts, order management, catalog administration, merchandising, advertising, analytics, and customer and business enterprise relationship management.

edition 7.0, which IBM launched all the way through the fourth quarter of 2009, introduced some compelling new points, such as the capabilities to support consumers the use of smartphones to browse items and even complete transactions. This free up additionally integrates with social media websites to make it handy for sellers to contain product experiences.

New move-channel capabilities in version 7.0 are geared toward establishing communication with valued clientele who, for instance, abandon a shopping cart.. IBM additionally stronger its B2B and B2C “starter stores,” which might be pre-configured templates that WebSphere Commerce clients can use to get going without delay. The starter store templates are in response to AJAX and use Dojo toolkit widgets.

WebSphere Commerce categorical gives a fine building block for groups (with 1,000 employees or fewer) that are just beginning to kind their on-line presence. It’s price noting that IBM enabled IBM i to run the entry-degree WebSphere Commerce categorical product. here is just a little superb, since that AIX is not supported on this product; handiest IBM i, windows, and Linux can run WebSphere Commerce express. express can even be downloaded; other versions must be ordered on optical media.

The skilled and business types of WebSphere Commerce present extra aspects and scalability than the specific version. The expert version adds issues like the earnings center add-on (used for go channel selling in a name middle), a product advice engine, aid for auctions, advertising and marketing elements, go-channel order processing, and Rational software Developer workspaces. (The income core add-on doesn't run on IBM i, however IBM helps operating this software on home windows and connecting to WebSphere Commerce on IBM i.)

The enterprise edition is probably the most scalable, and builds on the skilled edition with elements like aid for application as a service (SaaS) internet hosting, help for contracts and RFQs, aid for business debts and requisition lists, support for “punch outs,” B2B starter outlets, and tools for managing superior roles and relationships.

IBM prices for WebSphere Commerce the usage of its Processor value Unit (PVU) ranking gadget; sub-skill pricing is interestingly no longer purchasable anymore. below its PVU gadget, IBM assigns a distinct price to the individual cores running on a chip, and clients then use that number as a numerous for identifying their last can charge, in line with how many particular person cores they will use to run the application. IBM’s PVU pricing guide displays the PVU scores of quite a lot of vigor, X64, and mainframe processors.

For the WebSphere Commerce express software, IBM charges $299 for every PVU the consumer desires to make use of to run the software. in accordance with IBM’s PVU book, each core on an influence 6-fitted system i mannequin 520 (a extremely popular entry-stage AS/400) has a low PVU ranking of 80. So, by using multiplying $299 by way of eighty PVUs, you will see that it will cost $23,920 to get a license to run WebSphere Commerce express on a single core of a model 520 server, or $forty seven,840 to run on both cores of a single socket. Developer licenses for specific are $four,600.

shoppers working a larger model 550 (with a high PVU score of 120) can run the utility on only a single core, as a result of there is a limit of 200 PVUs for WebSphere Commerce Server, in addition to a single store restrict.

each PVU for WebSphere Commerce knowledgeable expenses $1,one hundred thirty, brining the cost of working this product to $113,000 for a typical processor core rated at 100, comparable to an influence 7-geared up mannequin 750, all vigour four and vigor 5 processors, and some multi-core Intel Xeon Nehalem processors. This edition doesn’t have a highest PVU restrict before valued clientele have to improve to commercial enterprise, however they should be paying for as a minimum 100 PVUs for every particular person web storefront. Developer licenses for skilled charge $21,300 per seat. each PVU for WebSphere Commerce business costs $1,820, bringing a minimum configuration to a price of $182,000 on a standard 100 PVU core.

WebSphere Commerce 7.0 is accessible now. For greater counsel on WebSphere Commerce edition 7.0, see www-01.ibm.com/application/genservers/commerceproductline.

IBM e-commerce servers vulnerable to hacks

image

(IDG) -- IBM this week posted an advisory on its Web site that alerted customers to a tool that could potentially decrypt administrator and customer passwords residing on servers that use some IBM e-commerce software.

The tool allows a hacker to decrypt and obtain passwords from sites that utilize macros used to conduct e-commerce transactions. Passwords of administrators and shoppers could be compromised via this tool, said the advisory.

The affected IBM e-commerce servers include Net.Commerce: v3.1, v3.1.1, v3.1.2, v3.2; WebSphere Commerce Suite: v4.1, v4.1.1; Net.Commerce Hosting Server: v3.1.1, v3.1.2, v3.2; WebSphere Commerce Suite, Service Provider Edition: v3.2; and WebSphere Commerce Suite, Market Place Edition: v4.1. The vulnerability is found on versions of these servers that run on several operating systems, including IBM's AIX, Microsoft's Windows NT and Sun Microsystems' Solaris.

According to IBM's advisory, administrators first need to verify whether the site has been exposed to the tool. This involves checking the site log for the possibility of a macro exposure to the tool. If a hack is verified, the next step involves eliminating the exposure, which includes changing administrator passwords and securing the macros used to conduct e-commerce transactions. Other recommendations from IBM include changing access permissions to directories and macros.

IBM said it issued the first security alert on this topic in November 1999. Recently, however, hackers released the tool to take advantage of the existing vulnerabilities, prompting the more recent advisory.

According to the Bugtraq mailing list on computer security vulnerabilities, IBM's e-commerce platforms support macro tools that do not properly validate requests in user-supplied input. If a request to a vulnerable script is made, the server can disclose sensitive system information, including results of arbitrary queries made to the e-commerce server database, according to Bugtraq. The hack also allows a hacker to obtain higher account privileges, Bugtraq said.

The mailing list further states that WebSphere Commerce Suite Version 5.1 is not vulnerable to the hack, as it uses different macro technology.

WebSphere review: Solid vehicle for e-commerce

In the midst of an economic cooling, it can be pretty difficult to justify updating an existing commerce infrastructure. Nevertheless, IBM's WebSphere Commerce Suite Pro 5.1 delivers a solid vehicle for broadening revenue streams by leading global e-initiatives out of the stateside doldrums and across the big blue seas.

WebSphere Commerce Suite Pro 5.1

BUSINESS CASE

This e-commerce component suite reduces time to market for deploying sites. Out-of-the-box integration eases setup requirements, and multicultural features enable global-commerce initiatives.

TECHNOLOGY CASE

WebSphere can be configured with very little effort or training. Building beyond the basics will demand an additional development environment, and catalog construction will benefit from a stronger toolset.

PROS

+ Supports global commerce

+ Provides out-of-the-box functionality

+ Contains many wizard-driven elements

+ Has solid messaging, payment, reporting capabilities

+ Is available in a much less expensive Start Edition

CONS

- Is costly

- Could benefit from more catalog management tools

- Lacks integrated Java toolset

COST

$45,000 per processor, $8,000 per store

PLATFORMS

Windows NT, Windows 2000, AIX, Solaris

IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y.; (800) 426-2255; www.ibm.com

This Java-based, e-commerce solution is an infrastructure for building, deploying, and administering e-commerce sites. It can integrate with existing internal and partnered systems, which can be easily expanded with add-ons to meet future needs.

WebSphere Pro includes many enterprise-level provisions and tools, including support for auctions, business intelligence, personalization, and marketing campaigns. Although none of these additions are particularly new, IBM has done a great job of making these functions sophisticated enough to address the needs of maturing e-commerce.

Version 5.1's improved user-access control and easier administration will help lower TCO, and cookieless session management will address privacy concerns, thereby bolstering shopper confidence.

Although workability of the new catalog subsystem falls short of comparable offerings in Microsoft's Commerce Server, the suite goes a long way toward surmounting the idiosyncrasies of conducting business beyond native bordders and allows broad functionality to be maintained in a single, easily managed site. Therefore, WebSphere Commerce Suite Pro 5.1 earned a score of Very Good for consideration as an enterprise e-commerce platform.

At first glance, they found the setup procedure more streamlined than those of earlier versions. Installing the various suite components, including Commerce Server, Application Server, DB2 Universal Database, Payment Manager, and the HTTP server (IBM's adaptation of the Apache Web server) took just half an hour.

If you prefer, WebSphere can also be configured using alternate Web servers, such as Netscape iPlanet and Lotus Domino, or an Oracle8i database.

There are some sizable system resource requirements to consider, and they found no room for skimping on them. IBM lists the minimum system configuration as an Intel Pentium III 733MHz processor with 512MB of memory, but they would recommend something with more muscle, as response times from this configuration proved slightly sluggish.

Creating and configuring a new store was easy work, particularly when basing it on the sample store provided. WebSphere imports the necessary HTML and JSP (JavaServer Pages) files, catalog information, payment and tax details, shipper information, and more to build a complete store archive template ready for customization.

One of the most impressive aspects of WebSphere is the provision for global-commerce development. It enabled us to design sites that could be easily customized to meet requirements in foreign markets.

Parameters for language, currency, and taxes -- including Value Added Taxes, where applicable -- were easy to select. Other considerations, such as regional shipping guidelines and carrier selection, presented no hassles to their setup. All currency selection and formatting can be automated at run time, providing context-rich page displays relevant to a shopper's point of origin.

Although the revised catalog subsystem provides advantages over previous versions, with capabilities for better product classification and grouping, they actually found the catalog development tools to be one of Version 5.1's shortcomings.

WebSphere provides a utility called Loader, great for importing large catalogs of existing XML data into the repository. But Loader lacks functionality for such an integral part of a site. To improve productivity in first-time catalog construction or ongoing modifications, you should likely plan to invest in another catalog tool such as WebSphere Catalog Manager, an add-on that allows you to import merchandise data from multiple sources and lends tools for editing, proofing, and publishing your catalog.

Because the single sample store provided does not show all of WebSphere's capabilities, be prepared for a considerable amount of custom configuration and interface-integration programming. But that level of customization is precisely what gives WebSphere its edge; it enables administrators to build, integrate, and manage a broad range of back-end connectivity issues and provides open-standards flexibility to meet future needs.

IBM has dispensed with support of the Net.Data scripting language and C++ in favor of a singular focus on a more ubiquitous Java-based run-time architecture, relying entirely on Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), JSP, and servlets. The chosen lingua franca provides a powerful programming and transaction model and is testament to Java's matured position in the marketplace.

WebSphere's JSP-messaging and integration capabilities can speak with a variety of existing systems, including SAP, CICS, MQSeries, as well as HTTP and e-mail. It also provides wireless support for custom notification systems via wireless devices, such as PDAs and NTT DoCoMo's I-mode-enabled devices.

The Pro Edition comes with none oof the Commerce Studio development tools that are standard in the Studio Developer Edition. So if you're looking for a JSP toolkit or looking to develop custom servlets and EJB components, VisualAge for Java, part of the Commerce Studio, is well worth your consideration. The Application Server, however, does sport a number of wizard-driven functions, facilitating tasks from adding data sources to configuring security to deploying EJB.

We found site maintenance and administration easily performed via the browser interface, either on the local machine or remotely. The administration console provides good control over site and store parameters, payment management options, user and group access, and monitoring.

End-user tools also performed well. The Commerce Suite Accelerator is great for delegating the operational responsibilities of an online e-business. Users can work directly on merchandising campaigns, such as up-and cross-sell offerings, build customer lists and groups, and manage auctions.

Customer service representatives can review orders, check status, and manage inquiries in real time. Furthermore, administrators can handily assign and restrict user privileges and access with feature-by-feature granularity.

The latest WebSphere offers rules-based personalization support from two approaches, the Blaze Rules Engine seen in previous versions, and now Macromedia LikeMinds. Blaze requires preconfigured rule construction and event-triggered actions; LikeMinds provides a more flexible personalization alternative. By analyzing a customer's purchasing history and captured clickstream data, LikeMinds can serve up relevant products and real-time recommendations to help improve sales. LikeMinds has been in use since last year in products such as BroadVision's One-to-One Commerce, and we've found it to be a scalable, highly effective means of delivering personalized, relevant recommendations on the fly.

Handy additions such as WebSphere Commerce Analyzer made cracking open the wealth of useful information buried in WebSphere's log resources easy. The Analyzer maintains a separate database of store activity, customer demographics, and products and offers good reporting capabilities with the provided Brio Broadcast Server reporting tools. The insightful analysis offers real-time statistics on features such as marketing campaigns, which allow for fast retooling of strategy to optimize effectiveness.

WebSphere also includes a number of payment protocol options for the Payment Manager, including SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), cassettes for CyberCash, and SET (Secure Electronic Transaction), as well as MIA (Merchant Initiated Authorization) to securely meet your payment requirements.

The expertise necessary to master some of the advanced intricacies of WebSphere might prove too heady for the skill sets of smaller companies, but IBM offers WebSphere in a variety of configurations, including the Start Edition and Developer Edition, one of which will make an affordable fit to improving e-commerce profitability for your business. In the face of an economic cooling, that fact alone makes WebSphere worth your look.

IBM i 7.1 TR5 Updates Come Out, Like Clockwork

Last week at the iBelieve NY event hosted by looksoftware, Allison Butterill, the IBM i product offering manager, was hinting about as strongly as she could without getting into the Big Blue doghouse that Technology Refresh updates for the IBM i operating system were going to be on a regular pattern, like the ticking and tocking of a clock, on a April-October bi-annual cadence.

So it was not much of a surprise to all of us that IBM i 7.1 got Technology Refresh 5, or TR5 for short, right on time as part of the October 3 announcements last week.

Interesting aside: Technology Refreshes are in the same April-October pattern as Canonical‘s Ubuntu Linux and the OpenStack cloud controller, an interesting bit of synchronicity that probably says a lot about when companies are ready, willing, and able to absorb software changes. And something that they should expect other software stacks to align. Red Hat is on a March-November cadence, and seeing as though it wants to be an OpenStack distributor, it will probably stick there, following by a month or so. But this seems to be the new way of things, and it is probably a lot healthier than just throwing code over the wall to the IT department when it is done.

As you can see in announcement letter 212-379, the TR5 update includes support for the new Power7+ machines that Big Blue just added to the product line and that are due to ship on October 19, 10 days after TR5 itself becomes available on October 9. But TR5 is about more than the Power 770+ and Power 780+ boxes and new disk and other peripherals that have been added to the Power Systems lineup. TR5 has a little something for everyone, and as Butterill promised last week, has a substantial number of enhancements for the DB2 for i database integrated within the IBM i operating system.

IBM i 7.1 TR5: A li’l sumpin’ for everyone.

Because the database enhancements apply to all customers, they are probably the most important aspect of TR5. These are very technical new features and many of them are way over my head. But you can drill down into the DB2 for i wiki at the IBM developerWorks to RTFM. In the meantime, I will give you an overview of some of the features, which generally focus on either boosting performance or enhancing the usability of the database. DB2 for i is now using Encoded Vector Indexing, or EVI, which has been around for more than a decade now and which made its debut on OS/400 platforms, to speed up certain SQL constructs such as ROLLUP, CUBE, and Grouping Sets to boost their performance. System Navigator for i, the system admin tool for the platform, is now smarter about indexes and how they ought to be used to boost the speed of SQL queries. The update also has a slew of new database APIs and commands, and supports JTOpen Lite, a new Java toolkit and class of Java libraries that lets mobile devices like smartphones and tablets using client-side Java access with a smaller footprint and better performance than other Java client code. The point is, JTOpen Lite can hook into DB2 for i databases, just like other databases, so you are not at a disadvantage. A bunch of database management commands have been enhanced, too, thus:

  • NULLID package management: Automating the creation of necessary objects, such as collections and dynamic packages, to more seamlessly allow applications using DB2 family database connectivity methods to access data in DB2 for IBM i.
  • CPYTOIMPF and CPYFRMIMPF commands: Enhanced capability for these bulk import/export commands to include or ignore database column names.
  • RUNSQLSTM command includes a new option to provide direct control over the command output file, with no unnecessary spool file accumulation.
  • Automatic updating of program information contained in the QSYS2/SYSROUTINE SQL Catalog when moving or copying an SQL program or service programs (stored procedure or user-defined function).
  • The database updates are in the SF99701 DB2 PTF Group Level 18 or later patches for IBM i 7.1 and in SF99601 DB2 PTF Group Level 28 or later for IBM i 6.1.

IBM Navigator for i, which was previously known as Systems Director Navigator for IBM i and before that System i Navigator, is getting a user interface refresh, with the static tables in the tool being replaced with dynamic ones coded using a toolkit called Dojo. There are a bunch of nips and tucks here, so, for instance, as you hop from tab to tab in Navigator the entire screen doesn’t have to refresh or that users can update their expired passwords from the same screen they were trying to log in from. The navigation bar on the left of Navigator (hence its name) is also now dynamic and updates as you roll into and out of different layers of the tool, making it less cluttered. These Navigator updates are coming on December 15 through a follow-on set of patches. Specifically, for IBM i 7.1, you will need SF99368 HTTP PTF Group Level 16 or later and for IBM i 6.1 you need SF99115 HTTP PTF Group Level 28 or later to get the updated functionality.

Those same PTFs available on December 15 will also include an XML service for IBM i, which is open source RPG code created by the Young i Professionals or YiPs, that allows XML scripts to call IBM i services such as the PASE AIX runtime or SQL for DB2 for i, among other features. You can access this XML Service though RPG, Java, PHP, Ruby, or other languages that know how to kick out or talk to XML.

With the TR5 refresh, WebSphere Application Server V8.5 is supported, as is WebSphere Commerce V7 Feature Pack 5. IBM is also updating the Web Administration GUI that is used for WebSphere Application Server V8.0 and V8.5, as well as with WebSphere Portal V8.0, which has a new installation manager for these programs that can cope with interim patches as well as uninstall the program. The Apache-derived integrated HTTP server that is part of the base WebSphere that is bundled with the IBM i operating system now has a plug-in module that can support files that are larger than 2 GB in size.

And InfoSphere Guardium V9.0, which is the latest release of Big Blue’s database security tool (acquired by IBM in November 2009), can accept DB2 for i as a data source. Prior Guardium releases had supported DB2 for i databases, so don’t get the wrong idea about Guardium, which monitors online transactions and tries to root out anomalous stuff. But in this case, IBM is allowing Guardium to sniff native database accesses as well as those through SQL, and doing so in real-time and, if you want, with filters that only capture the information that auditors want to see rather than the whole firehose.

Backup Recovery and Media Services (BRMS) is tweaked as well with TR5, creating a new construct called an enterprise hub, which is an uber controller for backups and recoveries that can control enterprise nodes. The idea is to let you manage BRMS from a one hub machine at the IBM i 7.1 level and reach out to i5/OS V5R4 or IBM i 6.1 machines and control them from this hub, cutting down on the sneakernet.

IBM has also announced service provider pricing for IBM i and AIX so they can get cloudy without going broke, and I am getting a little more information on that before I tell you how it works. But this is something they have all been clamoring for.

You can see the hardware-operating system compatibility matrix here if you are not sure you can run IBM i 7.1 and therefore be eligible for the Technology Refresh mechanism and the cumulative TR5 update.
