IBM used its DeveloperWorks live convention in San Francisco to announce the forthcoming availability of the latest version of its utility server. It claims WebSphere 5.0 is the primary within the business to offer "proper" compliance with rising web features specifications, providing seamless procedure-level integration between J2EE and Microsoft .net environments. large Blue also announced a raft of tweaks and improvements to different products in its ever-widening WebSphere middleware and integration strong.
Context: recent information puts IBM both on degree footing or just forward of its chief rival BEA techniques within the Java-based software server space, giving both companies about a 3rd of the market each and every -- even though huge Blue claims its business is growing to be faster than BEA's.
while the growing to be maturity of the application server market is prompting some to remark that the foremost avid gamers have extra or much less reached functional parity with their items, IBM says its latest efforts reveal it is ahead of the expertise curve. The technology element is only part of the normal price proposition, however IBM believes it newest raft of updates will proceed to apply the drive on its main competitors.
utility server and integration technologies may additionally clear up diverse complications, but IBM claims its differentiator is the convergence of both applied sciences, with the software server as the underlying "engine." hence the rebranding of IBM's integration middleware under the WebSphere banner, which now comprises MQ collection and the company technique integration know-how it got from CrossWorlds.
elements: WebSphere edition 5.0 is with beta clients now and should birth shipping all the way through the third quarter. Key updates include full compliance with J2EE 1.3, the latest spec to emerge from the Java community, in addition to "advanced" net features capabilities.
youngsters IBM claimed WebSphere 4.0 was the trade's first app server to aid net features necessities corresponding to XML, soap, WSDL and UDDI (which BEA would strongly contest), V5 contains whatever thing IBM calls dynamic application interaction.
whereas net capabilities-based mostly purposes are developed the usage of requisites equivalent to WSDL or cleaning soap, the interaction of these applications at a system or workflow level is truly written expressly for either the .internet or the J2EE atmosphere, IBM argues. before, this required added coding to allow internet services to exist in in reality heterogeneous environments. IBM says WebSphere V5 is the first application server to bridge this immediately.
It does this through more suitable integration between Java Message carrier (JMS) and enterprise JavaBean (EJB) environments, which handle the interactions among J2EE accessories and other messaging methods, including these written for .internet. together with advanced J2EE Connector structure (JCA) help, this has the web impact of enabling builders to show J2EE and .web-primarily based purposes and net services as reusable services, which could in turn expose application flows as an internet provider. moreover, business Rule Beans enable company analysts to update company rules without having handy-code application alterations.
"valued clientele are starting to install web functions, however they don't need to make a J2EE or .net determination," says Ed Harbour, director of WebSphere Commerce at IBM. IBM says it is the best vendor that has publicly announced this kind of ability.
In tune with IBM's dedication to pass-pollinate applied sciences in its middleware portfolio, V5 comes bundled with website efficiency management, authentication and access handle application from Tivoli.
Product strategy: IBM also launched new and rebundled versions of its integration application which are designed to simplify the pricing and packaging structure and form a springboard for impending 'verticalized' releases.
New technologies consist of the WebSphere MQ event broking service, an extension to IBM's message queuing family that enables businesses to 'multicast' unique counsel to subscribers in line with their particular person preferences. IBM claims its potential to put up this tips throughout public networks is entertaining, although it admits other multicasting items akin to Tibco's software from Talarian are commonly comparable.
IBM has additionally rebundled MQ and CrossWorlds capabilities to target essentially the most complicated environments present in tremendous companies. WebSphere company Integration 4.1 makes a speciality of automating business strategies, human intervention projects and information transformation and routing, and as such is an amalgam of applied sciences prior to now regularly occurring because the CrossWorlds InterChange Server, MQ Integrator broker and MQ Workflow.
the chief component is IBM CrossWorlds 4.1, which contains a sequence of method-stage connectors for net services and fiscal guidance exchange, as well as extenders for Siebel's software community. IBM will continue to repurpose this expertise for different vertical markets, including retail distribution, telecom, automotive, electronics and insurance, beginning in Q3. it's going to also liberate a revamped set of B2B connectors in June, targeted at inter-company enterprise system integration the use of web capabilities and different transport protocols.
Conclusion: although shoppers may still take it as a since IBM integration applied sciences will proceed to adapt, the announcements this week sharpen IBM's message of being capable of solve company-pushed integration issues via a sequence of chunk-sized modules designed notably for more than a few vertical industries. The deliverables have yet to arrive, however IBM says all the integral ISV partnerships are in area for a launch in the next month or so.the451 is an analyst firm that provides timely, specified and impartial evaluation of news in expertise, communications and media. February four, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan
there are lots of things that one could constructively criticize IBM about when it comes to the energy techniques platform working the IBM i working system. however, in fresh years at the least, a kind of issues would now not be – and will now not be – that the business has no longer accomplished enough to include probably the most crucial aspects of the modern programming toolbox.
basically, the business has finished and increasingly good job of embracing and extending the compilers, interpreters, frameworks, and fashions of the programming languages which have long gone mainstream on the grounds that Java first took the stage at the beginning of the dot-com growth in 1996 as an attempt to carry a simplified variant of C++, dwelling in an idealized, simplified, and importantly transportable hardware abstraction called a digital laptop. on account that that time, big Blue and the IBM i community have labored collectively, regularly with the community out in front with the lively involvement of the IBMers within the developerWorks company, to convey the Apache net server and the Tomcat software server the OS/four hundred, i5/OS and IBM i platform together with programming languages similar to Perl, php, Python, and Node.js, and versioning tools comparable to Git, and other techniques utility which are are simple equipment for up to date programmers.
The 2019 version of the IBM i marketplace Survey, which was released in January and which is spearheaded by way of Tom Huntington, govt vice chairman of technical options at HelpSystems, offered some perception into what is going on accessible on the programming entrance. The survey turned into performed remaining October and had 700 respondents, with 57 percent coming from the united states but simplest 2 p.c from Canada; another 19 percent got here from Europe, 15 p.c came from Latin the usa, and the remainder was cut up across Australia, Asia, and Africa. As they have brought up before, here is now not precisely consultant of the precise IBM i put in base, which is more heavily dispensed outdoor of the U.S.; but the numbers are regularly transferring within the appropriate direction as HelpSystems interprets the survey into extra languages and companies such because it Jungle motivate readers to take the survey.
The variety of operating techniques supported on the vigour systems platform and the capability to snap in tools created for Unix-like working methods into the PASE AIX runtime embedded in OS/four hundred and its successors is a key element to the ability to get and use tools that other platforms have. (in this method, IBM preserves its personal advantages reminiscent of RPG company language programming and an integrated relational database administration equipment and grafts on the advantages of different platforms, giving it a form of hybrid energy.) And IBM i stores were embracing that working gadget diversity on the platform and becoming less based on home windows Server machines working on X86 iron in other places in the datacenter, as that you would be able to see from this working gadget distribution from the survey:
only 22 % of the groups surveyed referred to that they have been most effective working the IBM i platform, and albeit, they discover it difficult to believe that this quantity isn't zero % given how pervasive home windows file and print servers are. but it surely is possible to head it alone with IBM i, perhaps in factory or far off retail settings, and it is possible so they will take the survey respondents at face value. what's enjoyable in this chart is that the proportion of windows Server is falling. again in the day, somewhere north of 95 percent of IBM midrange retail outlets suggested using home windows Server alongside their OS/400 and i5/OS machines, and this has been trending down as Linux, each on power methods iron inner of PowerVM logical partitions and on outboard X86 methods, is on the rise. AIX has gained some penetration at IBM i stores, too, each on distinctive vigour programs equipment and on PowerVM partitions on the identical machines operating IBM i.
As you may think about, RPG remains essentially the most standard programming language in use at IBM i stores, with over 84 % of respondents asserting they use RPG to create purposes (or bought RPG functions from third celebration software carriers that do). The SQL database programming language ranks number two, at seventy two percent, followed by using the CL scripting language native to IBM at forty seven % and Java at 41 %. here’s the rundown of programming language adoption:
There are a couple of interesting issues happening right here. First, whereas 68 p.c of shops document the use of windows Server of their IBM i shops, handiest 17 p.c say they are the usage of the .web framework from Microsoft for programming, which supports visible primary and the Java-inspired (that’s the satisfactory means to claim that) C# languages. they would have notion that after two and a half many years, Java would were up there with RPG and SQL as a favored language, but that has no longer took place. The share of COBOL is about the historical trend and tends to be concentrated in the monetary functions and assurance industries where code became ported from mainframes so many decades ago.
agencies have been most likely allowed to place down multiple programming language as part of the survey, and if you add up the entire percentages, you get 320 %, which implies an arithmetic imply of 3.2 languages in use per web page on usual throughout the IBM i put in base. (smartly, as a minimum this higher echelon – through which they imply the lively component, now not the biggest companies or these with the greatest machines – part of the IBM i base. They don’t be aware of the rest about the americans who don’t take surveys and they believe that the statistics that changed into gathered for the 5 years of the IBM i industry Survey are representative of these energetic retail outlets. That capacity those that preserve their programs and operating systems relatively present and that tend to be greater inclined to adopt newer applied sciences, starting from storage area networks to high availability clustering to advanced programming thoughts.) we're of two minds about this usual. First, RPG, SQL, and CL dominate, and mixed they give you a normal of two languages. They feel there are lots of sites that peculiarly use RPG and SQL, principally folks that have third party application software. it is critical to recognise that the survey query become not what languages had been used to create your purposes, however rather what languages are used for brand new utility building. So the base may have much more diverse and an improved numerical distribution of compilers and interpreters than this statistics implies. I don’t believe this is the case, however probably averages more like 5 languages as a result of whether they are aware of it or no longer, there’s likely some SQL, CL, or Java operating someplace within the application stack.
The survey asked corporations about what open source applied sciences they have got deployed of their IBM midrange shops, and trust it or now not the Apache web server, which IBM first commercialized because the kernel of WebSphere back in 1998, continues to be on the upward push and that's probably happening as fewer and fewer stores use home windows Server for software and net serving and more stores go native. That the native Apache web server has only forty p.c penetration tells you what those home windows Server that stay are doing. it's a mix of print, file, web, and software serving plus a healthy dose of SQL Server for analytical database processing that organizations don’t want to installation natively on their IBM i machines. Python and Node.js are on a gentle upward thrust, and the Git versioning device is finding its own stage, too.
What they will’t know from the first 5 surveys and what they might want to understand within the sixth next yr is what percentage of RPG is being coded within the contemporary free form trend it really is more like what Java does and what percentage remains the use of the older college, more tightly restrained older RPG mannequin. My guess is that for brand new code, it is likely as excessive as half and half, and that's mirrored in the proven fact that about have of the groups surveyed stated that that they had bought Rational Developer for i and have been the use of it for as a minimum some application coding. About a third of the businesses which have RDi say they're the use of it for all of their utility development, about a 3rd say it's around half and half, and a third say it is under half. regular that out and it's averaging around half of the applications at half of the agencies surveyed are completed the usage of RDi, which implies free form RPG.related reports

"Liberty Profile" - IBM WebSphere utility Server V8.5
IBM WebSphere software Server V8.5 Liberty profile is a flexible and dynamic server profile of was which makes it possible for the changed into server to deploy most effective required customized aspects in its place of deploying a huge set of available JEE add-ons.
what is Liberty profile in IBM became?
Liberty Profile is a component of IBM WebSphere software Server V188.8.131.52. It is very lightweight profile of WebSphere utility Server. Liberty profile is a flexible and dynamic profile of became which permits the became server to install only required customized points in its place of deploying a huge set of purchasable JEE components. developers can select required elements in accordance with company requirement and push it to app server. turned into Liberty profile is gold standard perfect for developers working on mission crucial business functions. It may well be even used for construction deployment. latest version of IBM changed into Liberty profile is Java EE 6 criticism and works well for purposes using this Java EE 6 licensed web profile.
Liberty profile is often known as mild weight, down sized edition of changed into starting from eight.5. they will decide to use the same for utility building if they now have constrained and smartly described set of server add-ons.
become Liberty profile architecture
structure part Description
"Liberty profile is a part of IBM changed into Product and it is sent as an in-built core feature of the WebSphere application Server. Liberty profile is not in any respect a separate product. it is a runtime ambiance for application server (changed into) with a prosperous feature set that varies through WebSphere utility Server varied editions.”
How turned into Liberty Profile Works?
If internet-utility requires most effective a servlet engine, then rather than beginning all different accessories liberty profile handiest begins the was kernel, the HTTP transport and the web container in order that builders can rapidly start and deploy the functions.
If an utility wants persistence function in their utility and would like to use JPA issuer element to entry relational data (RDBMS), developer simply should add JPA configuration in XML and Liberty profile will make it accessible persistence within the software.
The set of points which they will outline in <featureManager> tag describes the concrete profile for the configured server particular instance and then those lists of features are tailor-made for the application deployed to the application server. Internally, these facets are a discrete set of JARs which is nothing however the OSGi bundles which can be initialized and began as soon as they are delivered to the server configuration file (e.g. server.xml ). <function> tag is use to outline app specific JEE elements.
the liberty profile works on a dynamic runtime ambiance known as OSGi runtime. OSGi features are used to manipulate JEE based element lifecycles, and the injection of dependencies and their runtime configuration. After this step server technique and contains a single JVM, usual because the Liberty kernel, and any variety of non-compulsory points required by means of the functions. After that configured feature code and lots of the kernel code both runs as unbiased OSGi bundles or OSGi modules inside an OSGi framework (Open device Gateway).
the freedom profile supports a subset of the total WebSphere software Server programming model. It supports beneath forms-
OSGi Framework Lifecycle
OSGi framework follows OSGi Lifecycle for his or her Bundles. under is the standard lifecycle of OSGi.
how to installation become Liberty profile?
There are two ways to down load and set up the freedom profile runtime
Please refer beneath URLs for down load
Why should i exploit changed into Liberty Profile?
There are some key benefits of using Liberty profile runtime which is listed under:
became Liberty profile essential configuration
Liberty profile makes it really convenient to configure their server in a extremely essential and effective way the use of XML file. for example, default server.xml configuration file can also look like below:<server description="test server"> <!--enable points which you'd want to use --> <featureManager> <function>jsp-2.2</characteristic> </featureManager> <httpEndpoint id="appHttpEndpoint" host="localhost" httpPort="9080" httpsPort="9443" /> </server>
As per above default server.xml configuration in reality permits the JSP 2.2 characteristic, which depends upon the Servlet 3.0 characteristic; hence the Servlet feature is immediately enabled. They needn't to call and define it explicitly in became server.xml configuration file.
turned into Liberty profile configuration "Code Snippets"
beneath are some code snippet to configure was Liberty Profile. they will use the same as and when required in the utility development.<server> <featureManager> <feature>servlet-3.0</characteristic> <characteristic>mylocalConnector-1.x</function> </featureManager> </server>
above code will permit servlet-three.0 API and myLocalConnector-1.x for the configured software within the IBM WebSphere Server.<server description= "Dev Server DV 33-04"> <featureManager> <function>servlet-three.x</feature> </featureManager> <utility identification="TestWebApp" location="WebApps/test.battle" identify="TestWebApp" class="warfare" </server>
above code will permit servlet-3.0 API and a elegant war file named as examine.war below web utility TestWebApp.<server description="My check server"> <featureManager> <!--allow jndi api for datasource lookups --> <characteristic>jndi-1.0</characteristic> </featureManager> </server> above code will allow jndi-1.0 version for application. <client> <featureManager> <function>javaeeClient-7.x</function> <featureManager> <software identity="CLIENT_APP_ID_VALUE" identify="CLIENT_APP_TYPE" class="ear" region="clientAppType.ear"/> </client>
above code will permit java customer api v7 and apply this to when installation as an EAR file.
datasource configuration snippet<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-eight"?> <server description="My check DB server"> <!-- enable aspects --> <featureManager> <function>jdbc-4.x</characteristic> </featureManager> <datasource databaseName="$become.server.dir/CustomerDB" id="datasource_id" jndiName="data/jndi/look up/bank/CustomerDB" </server>
above code will allow jdbc-4.0 API and enable configured database identify in keeping with jndi lookup.
normal JEE specification in was Liberty profile
beneath Oracle JEE/J2EE/JSR specifications are available in stable IBM changed into Liberty profile. builders can configure any aspects using above code snippets based on application requirement.
1. the liberty Profile is free to use which is good but simplest in building environment not in construction atmosphere. If they are looking to move to production with the freedom Profile they are able to anyhow need to pay the usual IBM became licensing can charge which does not sounds respectable.
2. There are different lightweight servers obtainable today in the market which is free even for construction atmosphere so identifying Liberty profile over these options nonetheless deserve to be evaluated.
three. the liberty Profile does not supply any UI like administrative console to function server selected valuable configuration moves like updating the server config or setting up/uninstalling purposes and so on. so they have to rely on Eclipse/RAD/NetBeans editor to replace the server.xml file or they need to manually adjust it which does not look a feasible choice for builders.
4. application builders examine this server to Tomcat and Glassfish which have already been around for decades so it may well be one of the most greatest challenges for relocating to liberty profile.
5. In newest edition liberty profile is arising with lot of new facets so it might be entertaining to see how the liberty Profile handles the increase functionality load with both footprint and size (approx. 60MB).
6. For reduce IBM WebSphere Server versions (5, 6, 7) it isn't compatible which could be a challenge for builders and applications using them.
In a nutshell they will say that Liberty Profile is likely one of the quickest altering and most wonderful app servers to monitor available on the market nowadays. So they should really center of attention on their upcoming releases. New Beta models are developing very at once in the market with lot of latest aspects which can use in their applications with just an easy configuration. IBM should still basically focus on building UI and a few Migration Apps for Liberty Profile builders if you want to impulsively undertake it as examine to different main rivals like Tomcat, Glassfish, Joss etc. It could be basically exciting to see how the newest models of Liberty Profile address the raise performance with both footprint and dimension which is the predominant plus with IBM become Liberty Profile.

While these options exist to store HTTP session and state beyond the life of an application server or JVM, facilitating high availability, these approaches have challenges of their own. The growth and changing dynamic of the e-business applications, have forced application infrastructure to rethink the session persistence strategies. Some of these growing challenges include:
a. Use of runtime real-estate i.e. application server JVM heap to store session, seems inefficient use of resources.
b. Higher administrative and maintenance costs due to increase in user base and subsequent linear growth in application hosting infrastructure.
c. Performance consideration of storing, replicating and managing state of session objects.
d. Performance consideration due to large session objects in some specific use cases.
The challenges around session storage revolve around performance costs due to serialization of the session object to a database or to other Application servers/JVMs across the network. This performance costs coupled with the management of session state such as replication, updates and invalidation as add significant performance bottlenecks to the application hosting platforms.
Figure 1: memory to memory session replication.
Figure 2: Database session replication.
Websphere eXtreme Scale (WXS) attempts to address these performance considerations by introducing a new technological platform that purports improvised management and replication, thus addressing the challenges imposed by conventional HTTP session persistent mechanism. It is to be noted that while WXS also employs the memory to memory replication of http sessions, it significantly differs from the same mechanism employed by the WebSphere Network Deployment. WXS provides features such as QoS, replication reliability and linear scalability, which is non existent in Websphere ND. WXS distinguishes itself from traditional approaches in the following ways:
Figure 3A: WXS enabled grid for session persistence. Here WXS Grid JVMs are Isolated from Application JVMs
Figure 3B: WXS co-located HTTP session persistence. Here Application and Grid are co-located in the same JVM.
WebSphere eXtreme Scale provides non-invasive integration for HTTP session management, so that the application does not have to be changed. It does this in 2 ways:
a. HTTP servlet filter, a standard part of the servlet specification.
As shown in Figure , the HTTP servlet filter intercepts every request, prior to forwarding the request to servlet or JSP. The servlet filter wraps the HTTPServletRequest and HTTPServletResponse objects that the application developer uses to access the request's session state. The eXtreme Scale HTTPSession object overrides the object normally provided by the default session manager. There is therefore no data duplication between the two session managers, and eXtreme scale provided session manager overrides the WebSphere session manager. The filter ensures that the session data is synchronized with the grid. On each request, if HTTP session attributes have changed, they will be written back into the grid. The WXS enabled HTTP filter presents a choice of storing the sessions in the same JVMs as the servlet containers (collocated) or in a separate grid tier of remote JVMs. Each of these options have their merits and demerits, and should one of the infrastructure design considerations.
The synchronous interaction of the filter and the grid, is also an important design consideration. The synchronous interaction between filter and grid ensures that any change to the http session is immediately replicated to the grid. While this may be a desirable option in some cases, it does have a performance impact. WXS allows a configuration (in splicer.properties file) for this interaction to be asynchronous, where the changes are buffered and flushed to the grid, at defined intervals. It is to be noted that this Syncronous/Asynchronos replication between the filter and the grid, while similar in concept, is entirely different from the replication mechanism configured between the grid servers.
The following steps need to be performed in order to use HTTP servlet filer with WXS:
1. Create the following files and Package it with WAR (Web) Module in the META-INF directory.
- objectGrid.xml :This contains the definition of the grid itself; the maps, locking behavior, plug-ins, etc.
- objectGridDeployment.xml : This contains a description of the grid's deployment; how many partitions, zones, replication strategy etc.
- splicer.properties: This file provides the values used by the addObjectGridFilter script to splice the web module. This is one of the required input parameters for the script that splices the web module with filter declarations. This file contains servlet context initialization parameters such as catalog server host and port, affinity, persistence mechanism, replication type & interval etc. It is to be noted that while this file is not required artifact in the WAR (Web) Module, and only the above mentioned xml files are required, including this file is more for information only.
2. Run the addObjectGridFilter script on the WAR to add the filter to the web.xml file. The addObjectGridFilter script is usually located :
Usage : addSessionObjectGridFilter <location of war/ear file> <location of properties file>
Example: addSessionObjectGridFilter MyWebModule.war splicer.properties
3. When using WXS in a WebSphere ND managed environment, the managed nodes would need to be augmented with WXS (a.k.a XD-DG), and perform step 1 and 2, and deploy the Web Module or WAR to WXS augmented cluster.
b. Use of ObjectGrid client server Topology for embedded applications
This is a variation of the above techniques, in which the application is the client to the WXS grid.
I. Collocating the application with the grid (i.e. same ‘runtime' JVM): This is when the ObjectGrid servers are collocated in the same processes where the servlets run. The WXS session manager can communicate directly to the local ObjectGrid instance, since it is collocated with in the same server process.
When WebSphere Application Server as runtime and grid container, simply place the supplied objectGrid.xml and objectGridDeployment.xml files into the META-INF directories of your WAR files. ObjectGrid will automatically detect the presence of these files when the application starts and will then automatically launch the ObjectGrid containers in the same process as the session manager. You can modify the objectGridDeployment.xml depending on which type of replication (synchronous or asynchronous) and how many replicas you want configured. This step assumes that your have augmented the application server profile/instance with WXS.
II. Isolating the application from the grid (i.e. application and grid in separate JVMs): Unlike the topology discussed above the server process hosting the application is different from the server process hosting the JVMs. This is beneficial for the application with either voluminous HTTP session traffic or relatively larger http session objects. In this case the WXS session manager, which resides on the application server process, communicates to a remote ObjectGrid server processes. In effect the WXS session manager becomes the client, to the Object grid servers, which are the hosts to grid containers.
To use a remote, ObjectGrid, the WXS session manager must be configured to communicate with the catalog servers and grid servers. The session manager will then use an ObjectGrid client connection to communicate to the catalog server and the ObjectGrid servers, wherever they reside. If the ObjectGrid servers are to be started in independent, standalone J2SE processes, then it is advisable to launch the ObjectGrid containers using the objectGridStandAlone.xml and objectGridDeploymentStandAlone.xml files supplied in the session manager samples directory. This differentiation is to indicate that the HTTP session store is standalone and isolated. The core functionality of the file remains, i.e. like objectGrid.xml, objectGridStandalone.xml defines the grid for sessions, and objectGridDeploymentStandalone.xml defines the mechanics of grid deployment.
With WXS Zone based replication, WXS allows for rules-based data placement, enabling high availability of the grid due to redundant placement of data across physical locations. This notion is particularly appealing to enterprise environments that need data replication and availability across geographically dispersed data centers.
WebSphere eXtreme Scale introduced zone-based support introduced in V184.108.40.206. Zone support provides much needed control of shard placement in the grid. Zone support allows for rules-based shard placement, enabling high availability of the grid due to redundant placement of shards across physical locations. This notion is particularly appealing to enterprise environments that need data replication and availability across geographically dispersed data centers. In the past these enterprise computing environments were limited due to the performance constraints imposed by networks and real time data replication requirements. With the inclusion of Zone support, WebSphere eXtreme Scale offers better scalability by decoupling the grid environment. With Zone support, only the metadata shared by the catalog servers is synchronously replicated,
While the data objects are copied asynchronously across networks. This not only enables better location awareness and access of objects, but also imposes fewer burdens on enterprise networks, by eliminating the requirement of real time replication.
As long as catalog servers see zones being registered (as the zoned grid server come alive), the primary and replica shards are striped across zones. Further, the zone rules described in the objectGridDeployment.xml file, will dictate placement of sync or async replica shards in respective zones.
As a general practice, it is recommended that you place only sync replicas in same zone and async replicas in a different zone for optimal replication performance. This placement also would be optimal for scaling across geographies or data centers.
Since core groups do not span zones, the catalog server(s) are placed one or two per data center or zones, and the catalog servers synchronize their object/shard routing information. A catalog service must be clustered for high availability in every zone. The catalog servers retain topology information of all of the containers in the ObjectGrid and controls balancing and routing for all clients. Since catalog servers play a vital role in maintaining the catalog service and client routing, it is important to understand the concept of a catalog service quorum. A catalog service quorum is the minimum number of active catalog server members required for the grid system to operate correctly (i.e to accept membership registrations and changes to membership to ensure proper routing and shard placement).<zoneMetadata> <shardMapping shard="P" zoneRuleRef="stripeZone"/> <shardMapping shard="S" zoneRuleRef="stripeZone"/> <zoneRule name ="stripeZone" exclusivePlacement="true" > <zone name="ZoneA" /> <zone name="ZoneB" /> <zone name="ZoneC" /> </zoneRule> </zoneMetadata>
Figure 4: Zone meta data from ObjectGridDeployment.xml file, showing single ZoneRule ‘StripeZone' i.e if primary is placed in Zone A, the secondary will be placed in either ZoneB or ZoneC, but not both.
This approach of ensuring the registration and consistency of grid servers is achieved only when a quorum is established between catalog servers. Writes to
the catalog service state are committed only when the majority of the catalog
servers participate in the transaction. Containers that are changing states cannot
receive any commands, unless the catalog service transaction commits first. If
the catalog service is hosted in a minority partition, i.e no quorum established, it
then accepts liveness messages. The catalog servers cannot, however, accept
server registrations or membership changes, because the state is essentially frozen, until the catalog service quorum is re-established.
Figure 5: Two geographically disperse Zones to store HTTP sessions across 2 data centers. Please note that the Catalog Servers are hosted in separate JVMs from Grid containers, and ONLY the Catalog severs are grouped in separate core group. This is done as Zones do not span core groups.
One of the main design concerns of an application and application infrastructure is the session persistence and handling of session state beyond the life of application servers/JVMs. The traditional persistence mechanisms have imposed performance and scalability concerns with growth in business and subsequent requirements. Growth in business usually results in increase traffic, user session and proportional storage requirements. Historically IT organizations have attempted to battle this problem with innovative and complex solutions such as employing various caching layers at the edge for static content, and a separate cache for dynamic content, or by selectively preserving some HTTP Session data and recreating the others. Such strategies while effective in some application environment, have reached maturity level of its growth spectrum. Increasingly complex and de-fragmented application frameworks have compelled the introduction on ‘in-memory data grid' to provide a scalable solution to address the growth of session storage - both in terms of size and volume. The introduction of an in memory grid relieves the constant battle with scalability and provides an isolated layer, whose sole purpose is to store HTTP Session (or any java) objects.
WXS technology enables ‘in-memory data grid' which is essentially a grid of interconnect JVMs, acting as a single cohesive unit, much like a database, without the management and performance overheads. Using WXS for HTTP session persistence is a very non-invasive change to application architecture, as seen in Figure 3, a servlet filer is introduced in the application intercepting requests and connecting to the grid, without any significant change to the application architecture. The WXS enabled grid is policy driven; self managed and can easily absorb growth by inclusion of additional JVMs to the existing grid. WXS thus makes a compelling consideration for HTTP session persistence in the environments that is plagued with performance and scalability woes due to growth in business application traffic. WXS not only addresses the fundamental session storage concerns, but add to the capability of storing session across geographically disperse data centers, independent of WebSphere infrastructure's cell based management boundaries. This capability alone, arms organization with the ability to persist and handle session state across data centers. Such a capability was neither recommended nor technically feasible with existing technologies and solutions. WXS' Zone support thus becomes a distinguishing feature, which sets WXS apart from many competing caching technologies.

Enterprise Manager Grid Control 10g Release 4 (10.2.0.4) includes many new features that add to your ability to monitor and manage your enterprise:
Grid Management Features
System Monitoring: Lights-out, comprehensive monitoring of all components of the Oracle ecosystem. Alert handling flexibility is improved through repeating notifications. This feature allows administrators to be e-mailed at regular intervals until an alert is acknowledged. Administrators can acknowledge an alert as a convenient way of indicating that they have looked at an alert.
Privilege Delegation Providers: Administrative security and flexibility are enhanced through support for privilege delegation providers for executing jobs and patching targets from Enterprise Manager. A privilege delegation provider allows a logged in administrator using his account to be authorized to execute a specific action based on a subset of privileges delegated from another account. Super Administrators can now set up regular administrator accounts to leverage the two supported privilege delegation providers: Sudo and PowerBroker.
Enterprise Manager Audit Framework: Enhanced auditing capability increases tracking flexibility and utility by allowing Enterprise Manager administrators to define custom audit attributes in addition to the standard "out-of-box" attributes. Users can now enter text strings such as a work order number before performing actions in Enterprise Manager in order to have that custom string associated with all the audit records associated with that action, creating a richer audit trail.
Compare Monitoring Templates: See at a glance how metric and policy settings defined in a template differ from those defined on destination targets.
Bare-Metal Provisioning: Automatically deploy new fully configured systems, including operating systems and software images. Clone existing installations and software images (such as Oracle Cluster Ready Services (CRS), Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), and Oracle Application Server).
Oracle Real Application Clusters Provisioning and Conversion: Automatically configure Oracle RAC database instances to dynamically increase database capacity to meet your needs; convert non-RAC databases to Oracle RAC databases.
Cloning: Simplify deployment of Oracle solutions by cloning fully patched and tested Oracle homes to multiple hosts; clone database instances to create backups of important databases; create new single-node Oracle RAC by cloning an existing RAC Oracle home.
Lights-Out Patching: Quickly identify available patches for the components in your enterprise. Find out which have not been applied and which are critical. Bring those components up to the latest patch level with just a few clicks.
Policy-Based Monitoring: Apply consistent, proactive management practices across your enterprise using policies and management templates.
Policy Groups: Policy groups are standards by which targets are measured. The rules within a policy group are managed as a set; that is, they are viewed, maintained, evaluated, and reported in the context of a group. In contrast, policy rules are not evaluated as a set. Policy rules are viewed, maintained, and evaluated as standalone entities. Oracle provides the following policy groups: Secure Configuration for Oracle Database, Secure Configuration for Oracle Real Application Cluster, and Secure Configuration for Oracle Listener.
Security Assessment: Automatically assess the security vulnerabilities in your enterprise using the Critical Patch Facility, which provides notifications and a direct link to Oracle Support. Enhanced security rules harden the infrastructure database and host. Violation score reporting helps administrators prioritize security operations.
Job System: More powerful, feature-rich job system allows you to schedule and run multi-task jobs across multiple targets, as well as receive notifications.
Group Management: Enhanced group management features enable administrators to manage many components as one. Group pages roll up critical management information, such as overall status and group status history, open alerts and alert history, open policy violations and policy trend overview charts, and out-of-box group performance charts. Simplifies common administrative tasks, such as running jobs, executing custom SQL or host commands, and scheduling maintenance windows. A group "dashboard" enables proactive monitoring of status and alerts across all group members as they occur.
Service Management Features
Services: Define services to represent the business functions or applications that run in your enterprise. Measure the performance and availability of these services, receive alerts when there is a problem, identify common issues, and diagnose causes of failures.
Service and System Topologies: Easily define, visualize, and manage key business functions and the assets that they rely upon.
Service Level Management: Allows you to define service-level goals for availability and performance and more quickly resolve problems through rules, reports, and historical monitoring.
Dashboards: Offer "at-a-glance" monitoring of all critical indicators for your services and systems.
Root Cause Analysis: Diagnose service problems quickly using the Root Cause Analysis engine.
Enterprise Reporting Features
Out-of-Box Reports: Easy-access out-of-box reports for all Oracle components; reports on configuration, performance, service level, and audit.
Graphical Report Creation: Easy-to-use tool to create custom reports.
Complete Repository Access: Create reports using any data collected and stored in the Management Repository.
Report Publishing: Proactively deliver specialized management information to users, managers, and executives using out-of-box reports, custom reports, and secure publishing features, with views accessible by any reporting product.
Database Management Features
Oracle Real Application Clusters Management: Enhanced monitoring of Oracle RAC databases and clusters to include Interconnect monitoring, cluster cache coherency diagnostics, CRS monitoring, a graphical topology view; provision Oracle RAC deployments, convert single instances, and add nodes to existing clusters.
Transportable Tablespaces: Allows an administrator to move tablespaces between databases.
Fast-Start Failover: Allows Data Guard to rapidly and automatically fail over to the standby database without requiring manual intervention, significantly improving the degree of availability as well as the disaster resilience for the system infrastructure.
Restore Points: Guaranteed recovery of the database to a particular point in time when used with Flashback Database or Flashback Table.
Enhanced Backup Management: Provides a single view of all backups run against the databases in a domain.
Access Advisor Enhancements: Enhanced to expose more powerful features of the Access Advisor, including template support, tuning of a single statement, journaling, recommendation implementation status, and action implementation status.
Automatic Segment Advisor: Proactively identifies segments that have significant wasted space due to data fragmentation, which are good candidates for Online Segment Shrink. You no longer need to run Segment Advisor to determine what segments have data fragmentation.
Online Segment Shrink Enhancements: Extends Online Segment Shrink capability to large object (LOB) segments and index-organized table (IOT) overflow segments. Online Segments Shrink capability is now extended to all types of segments, further reducing the need to perform other more advanced reorganization methods such as Online Redefinition.
Oracle Streams: Share message information within a database or from one database to another. Control what information is put into a stream, how the stream flows from database to database, what happens to messages in the stream, and how the stream terminates.
Adaptive Alert Thresholds: Computes statistical alert thresholds using either static (user-defined) or dynamic (self-adjusting) baselines. Dynamic statistical baselines can significantly improve the accuracy of performance alerting, while reducing exposure to the "false positives" commonly incurred under fixed threshold schemes.
Application Server Management Features
Extended Middle Tier Management: Allows administrators to discover OracleAS Farms, OracleAS Clusters, Oracle HTTP Server High Availability Groups and OC4J High Availability Groups as composite targets and perform management and administration operations on them. In-DepthIt’s the mainframe’s turn to get the services treatment
But IT shops are now waking up to find that the mainframe still runs the key enterprise applications, and that the mainframe room is due for some “home improvement.”Application development managers are discovering that, when it comes to refashioning mainframe apps as Web services apps, there are many different ways to go. And as Gartner Inc.’s Dale Vecchio said, they may open up a Pandora’s box if the dig too deeply into that legacy code. Developers need to let more -- not fewer -- users into the mainframe world, and some will opt for host-to-Web, GUI extensions and screen-scrapers as the best means to start to bring the mainframe into the realm of Web services.
When the Minnesota Dept. of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Division in St. Paul decided to integrate its legacy mainframe applications with Web services, the division chose to go with the Verastream Host Integrator product from WRQ Inc., Seattle.
According to Judith Franklin, manager of enterprise technology support at DVS, the division’s goal was to improve data quality and accuracy, as well as turnaround time to business partners and the drivers of Minnesota. Challenges were plentiful. To begin with, the system in use was a largely paper-driven environment, based on a mainframe that was more than 25 years old.
When Franklin was brought in, processing a motor vehicle title transfer took between three and six months. It was not uncommon for the processing of a driver’s license to take up to six weeks. Most of the delay, she said, was caused by the amount of time it took for the paperwork to arrive at the DVS and be entered. In addition, there were a lot of data-entry errors.
“Based on their business model, if you needed to get a driver’s license or renewal, or register a vehicle or transfer a title, you had to go to their business partners who could be the cities, counties or private individuals in business for themselves,” said Franklin. “You would go there, do your paperwork and they in turn would send us the paperwork. And there it would sit, a great pile of paperwork that would eventually trickle to the top where their data-entry people would then enter it.”
The DVS system was running on an IBM S390 mainframe with Cincom’s proprietary Supra database, which was proving very expensive to maintain. “We needed to do something dramatically different,” Franklin said.
Franklin found two or three Cobol programmers who knew the system inside and out. As is often the case with legacy systems, there was very little documentation. The screens were typical CICS screens, and could not be released to business partners or to the public because they contained too much information and were difficult to read.
Franklin’s first goal was to do something effective -- and in a relatively short timeframe -- that would allow the DVS to start publishing on the Web and provide a service-oriented approach for doing transactions and real-time data entry with business partners. It was not necessary to enhance the current system because the DVS planned to eventually move away from that database.
“We required a tool with a minimal learning curve for Visual Basic programmers already on staff, rather than having to bring in Java programmers and build up expertise,” said Franklin. “We also wanted a tool flexible enough to fit into wherever they would be doing their core application development as they grew.”
Using Verastream Host Integrator with Microsoft Visual Studio, and running on Microsoft IIS with ASP, the DVS went live with two Web sites for driver’s license applications in less than two months. One site was for the public, while the other was a private authenticated site for business partners.
The DVS built Web apps that go to the Verastream middleware, which then goes to the mainframe and returns data with records that are deployed and formatted for readability. The DVS is also merging its Verastream model with a variety of SQL databases.
A site for law enforcement was then added. “This has been a huge turnaround for the state,” said Franklin. “Our law-enforcement partners say that the services they now provide are the best tools they’ve been given since the mobile radio.”
Prior to Web services, law-enforcement officials had to spread out pages of papers; with the new system, they can access a current, readable driver’s record. More than 10 million photos can be stored using the SQL database, and the records are integrated with the photos.
The division has taken data entry out to all deputies and agents in the state, and has been doing real-time transactions for about a year. “This has allowed us to withstand budget issues that all states are going through, and it has increased the accuracy of their data,” said Franklin. “The DVS has saved some $260,000 in programming/legacy storage costs, and has cut license processing times by 75%.”
But the change was not completely smooth, admitted Franklin. The DVS went from a batch-processing concept to one that suddenly opened up 24x7. There were also bandwidth problems when the DVS started getting more than 27,000 hits a day.
“In many ways, their mainframe people weren’t prepared for the increase in production, CPU cycles and database calls, which more than doubled in the first three months after opening up their mainframe to the Web,” she said. “And they learned that it would all double again during the next three months.”
Also a concern: maintenance. DVS people brought everything down for maintenance one Saturday morning. “It was a one-time job on a Saturday morning, and suddenly the motor vehicle site is down and my beeper is going off,” said Franklin, admitting to some shortsightedness. “The concept is so different now that you might unwittingly let things like that slip by.”
Performance is key
“People are finding that they need to move their applications to the Web to make it easier for their customers and partners to do business with them,” said Scott Rosenbloom, chief strategist at WRQ. “One of the challenges is that some 60%–70% of their information and business logic is stored on legacy systems.”
Companies need to move quickly to the Web, so re-creating business logic and data on new platforms is just not possible, he added. “They’re starting to step back and say, ‘We already have that business logic and information. It’s reliable, and it’s been on the host maybe 15 or more years. Let’s find a way to expose that to the Web to make the creation of these new applications quicker and give them higher functionality.’”
WRQ’s Verastream product is a runtime server with design tools. It works with products like Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, BEA Workshop and IBM’s WebSphere. “We expose the information with Verastream, and that is used to build the actual application,” said Rosenbloom.
The WRQ tools also support setting layers of granularity. Many approaches to integration in the past failed, noted Rosenbloom, because when people started using services like CORBA they did not change the way they viewed the calls, even though they were going over a network where there is a lot more overhead and latency.
“In Web services, you can have this same challenge -- if you just expose the existing API via Web services, you could have very low-level, fine-grain calls going on. For example, if you’re updating a field or a record as opposed to sending an entire document full of many records that you may want to submit all at once,” Rosenbloom explained.
“It’s very important that you implement Web services with the right level of granularity when you make this Web service call because there is a lot of overhead associated with this call,” he added. “You’re creating an XML document. You’re shipping it over a protocol like HTTP over the network, and there are a lot of different things going on; you want to ensure that when you make that call over the network, it will do a lot of work for you before it returns.”
