PureApplication systems Get Power7+, but now not IBM i | Real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

you might must search high and low, throughout time and lower back once again, to find a more pure utility device than the software gadget/400 and its forebears in the system/3X line and its tremendous-grandchild, the vigour programs platform operating IBM i. but oddly adequate, as IBM announced the power version of its PureApplication converged programs remaining week, the one aspect it did not do is announce a variant of the stack that could guide the IBM i operating system.

it is like blade servers all over the place once again, with OS/400 getting such late and kludge aid that the one client set that could naturally pay a premium for the mixing merits of a BladeCenter chassis supporting a mixture of vigor and X86 blade servers and integrated management were alienated from the market and then invited late to the celebration. You probably understand what i am pondering that huge Blue should do earlier than I even write this story. however let’s go through it just to get the considering clearly outlined and on paper. smartly, pixels.

First things first. there's nothing incorrect with the brand new PureApplication W1700 hardware and utility stack introduced on February 12 when you are an AIX consumer running the DB2 database. Or an Oracle or Hewlett-Pakard store desirous to flow off their respective Sparc/Solaris or Itanium/HP-UX structures. or even Wintel and Lintel retail outlets desirous to stream up or over (counting on how you view the relative platforms) to power-AIX. anything else that makes power superior makes IBM i reside longer.

the brand new PureSystems W1700 appliances are corresponding to the Xeon E5-based W1500 home equipment that IBM introduced back in April 2012 when the Flex gadget modular servers, which merge servers, networks, and storage right into a blade-like and rack-like hybrid. The change is that the W1500 appliances are in accordance with two-socket, half-width Flex x240 server nodes that use Intel Xeon E5 processors and, at the least in response to the inner IBM documentation I have viewed, the W1700 is based on a 4-socket, full-width server node this is in accordance with the Power7+ processor from IBM.

but wait, you say? IBM has now not introduced a 4-socket Power7+ server node for the Flex equipment chassis. correct. now not as a standalone product, and not in the rest that you can examine concerning the W1700 home equipment in announcement letter 213-091 or on IBM’s internet website. And let me say anything right here concerning the decent people of utility group, which can be managing the PureSystems launches. statistics sheets are presupposed to have statistics in them. Feeds, speeds, slots, and watts. this is a hardware and a device announcement in spite of everything. individuals need to be aware of what the server node is, what switches you're the use of to hyperlink them collectively, how the storage is built-in, and the entire facets within the rack that contain the PureApplication equipment. saying it has this many cores, that lots memory and disk, and never giving a cost is not ample.

What i know for certain in regards to the hardware within the new W1700 stacks is that Steve Sibley, director of global product administration for IBM’s vigour programs division, informed me right through a Power7+ briefing concerning the vigour methods iron two weeks in the past that large Blue changed into watching for the Power7+ processor to launch the energy-primarily based variant of the PureApplication stacks in preference to do a Power7 version remaining yr. This probably has to do with the performance, extra cache memory on chip, and accelerated leading memory (both actual and thru plenty-greater reminiscence compression, which now has its algorithms carried out on special accelerators on the Power7+ chips rather than by means of the CPUs) that the Power7+ chips present. This stands to cause, of course. furthermore, IBM needed to lead against Oracle’s Exadata database clusters and Exalogic middleware clusters, which might be in response to Xeons, with its personal Xeon iron. Or as a minimum somebody believed that. If power is so plenty more desirable, and if I have been IBM, i might all the time lead with vigor and have X86 iron as an option.

Anyway, the announcement letter tells you ways a whole lot a W1700 appliance weighs and how loud it is, however it doesn’t inform you what the processor nodes are, how many cores are on the processor, how plenty leading memory may also be added to the node, and it says nothing in regards to the networking that links nodes to storage. One doc I even have considered confirms that it is a full-width node, and that capability it is a 4-socket field and it pretty much actually must be the imminent Flex p460+ server node I expect any day now as a standalone product. The setups come with from ninety six to 608 cores, with memory scaling together with cores. The machines have integrated arrays with a collection mixture of flash and disk that has records protection across distinctive RAID sets (with spare drives) so you can recuperate from storage mistakes. once more, the documents don’t say precisely what type of RAID, and by the way, it matters what kind for each efficiency and availability factors. Anyway, the gadget has arrays with 48 TB of disk and 6.4 TB of flash storage, possibly with hierarchical storage administration. (again, IBM doesn’t say and it should.) listed here are their four sizes, and the expenditures of the completely configured W1700 utility home equipment:

  • Small: ninety six cores and 1.5 TB of leading memory; checklist expense $2.97 million
  • Medium: 192 cores and three TB of reminiscence; checklist expense $5.sixty four million
  • significant: 384 cores and 6.1TB of reminiscence; record cost of $10.73 million
  • high-efficiency: 608 cores and 9.7 TB of memory; record price of $sixteen.seventy three million
  • The techniques run AIX 7.1 and cannot be deployed with Linux or IBM i, in spite of the fact that technically there is not any explanation for it. The equipment is licensed to place the PowerVM hypervisor on each and every node if you desire, and you'll additionally put DB2 commercial enterprise Server version 9.7 on the entire nodes. Ditto for the V7.0, V8.0, and V8.5 types of WebSphere utility Server Hypervisor version.

i was guessing that the small configuration is 4 four-socket p460+ server nodes using six-core Power7+ chips, after which medium doubles it up, and big doubles it once again. The properly-conclusion computer needs to be using eight-core Power7+ chips for the numbers to work, and it has to have 19 server nodes for the processor core count number to work. here's just a guess in the absence of facts. An IBM spokesman told me that the W1700s use eight-core Power7+ processors running at 3.61GHz. this is the midrange half in the p260+ node announced final November, incidentally, and to get the core counts to work, you could have six half-width nodes instead of 4 full-width nodes the use of six-core chips to get there. IBM could even be deactivating cores to have them as means on demand. once again, IBM became no longer clear.

The W1700 machines above can also sound pricey, but consider that an Exadata X2-2 database cluster would cost $4.forty seven million at list price with ninety six cores. (I don’t have Exadata X2-3 pricing easy.) None of those machines are competitively priced, and as a whole lot as IBM talks about it, they aren't truly geared toward small businesses and even most midrange retail outlets. just like Exadatas don't seem to be. The PureApplications latitude in expense from $30,938 to $27,911 per core, wholly careworn, if you do the math. it's much less expensive per core than buying just AIX plus DB2 or just IBM i (which contains DB2 for i) for a huge dangerous vigor 780 or 795 SMP equipment–with out the expense of the iron even accounted for in the SMP machines. So the message is obvious, and one which Oracle has been hammering on for years: if you can run your apps on a virtualized cluster as an alternative of on a large SMP laptop, make sure to.

I even have been saying this so long that i am blue within the face, but i'll say it again. IBM needs to create a child PureApplication system that runs IBM i and makes use of the DB2 Multisystem clustering that has been around forever to attach together nodes right into a single database image because the PureScale extensions to DB2 and AIX do in the PureData transaction processing home equipment. And IBM should additionally make these beefier PureApplication programs obtainable running IBM i with the identical relative pricing to massive SMP boxes that AIX/DB2. Any strategy that is respectable to are attempting to steal Oracle and HP purchasers and grow the AIX/DB2 base is additionally good to continue and growth the existing IBM i base.

The ordinary wisdom is that it takes 10 times as a whole lot funds and effort to benefit one consumer than it does to hold one. We’re down some thing on the order of one hundred twenty five,000 valued clientele–essentially half of the peak OS/four hundred base in 1999. retaining the one hundred fifty,000 they now have satisfied, and giving IBM i stores all the same sweets and benefits, received’t make headlines like taking on Oracle. however sure would make the lives of Oracle, HP, Dell, and now Cisco methods a hell of an awful lot tougher once they are attempting to poach IBM i shops.

"we're running billions of extreme calculations in keeping with Einstein's idea of relativity on the POWER7 blades," noted Gaurav Khanna, professor of physics at UMass-Dartmouth. "running POWER7, i'm in a position to get results as a great deal as eight instances sooner than running the same calculations on an Intel Xeon processor. Calculations that used to take a month to run at the moment are entire in under every week. This potential that i can do eight instances more science in the same timeframe than I could do earlier than."

additionally, the brand new POWER7 programs can give valued clientele with very high levels of server virtualization and consolidation, which may lead to improved fee performance, enhanced power effectivity and decreased footprint size in the statistics middle.

"RPM has all the time been an early adapter of IBM technology and the POWER7 chips together with AIX 6.1 offered a large raise to the batch and threading velocity of their items," spoke of Allan Grossman, chief architect at RPM applied sciences. "With POWER7 chips, batch jobs runtimes stronger by upwards of 35 percent and fewer substances had been used. As part of their upgrade, RPM additionally moved to a full virtualized ambiance across two POWER7 sixteen-core P750 machines. This alternate decreased the time and effort to manage the boxes."

Market analysis studies display that more and more shoppers are settling on to run their groups on IBM vigour programs™. in accordance with IDC, IBM extended its lead in the UNIX® servers within the fourth quarter of 2010 by capturing 53.9 p.c salary share of that section, gaining 5.9 features of share over competitors and leading the 2nd-vicinity dealer by way of greater than 30 percent.

"state-of-the-art energy bulletins show IBM's ongoing funding in workload-optimized servers. simply two brief months after publically demonstrating the way forward for computing with Watson and its superior analytical and gaining knowledge of capabilities, IBM is upping the ante with a performance bump within the underlying gadget."

New and more advantageous power methods items include:

the brand new sixteen-core, single-wide IBM BladeCenter® PS703 and 32-core, double-large IBM BladeCenter PS704 blade servers, which give clients an alternative choice to sprawling racks. mp;A With Power Systems Top Brass, Part One

The editorial team from The Four Hundred had a pow-wow with the top brass in the Power and z Systems division within IBM‘s converged Systems and Software Group. Tom Rosamilia, who was tapped to run both the Power and mainframe lines at IBM last August, had been running the mainframe line before that July 2010 reorganization and was in charge of the WebSphere line of middleware within Software Group before that.

Rosamilia brought along his lieutenants, Ian Jarman, Colin Parris, and Linda Grigoleit, and I brought along Alex Woodie and Dan Burger to sit at the round table. Jarman has been the product marketing manager for the AS/400, iSeries, and System i lines for many years and was tapped to be the manager of the entire Power Systems systems software lineup two years ago. Parris was in charge of the systems software development labs for Systems and Technology Group until last August, when he was named vice president and business line manager for the Power Systems business, working directly for Rosamilia. Grigoleit is the program manager in charge of the Power Systems Academic Initiative, which tries to build bridges between IBM and colleges and universities to make sure people have the Power Systems skills that companies need.

Because this is a long interview, we’re breaking it into two pieces. I did most of the yakking at the beginning along with Rosamilia and Jarman, but other people dove into the fray in the second half of the interview, which they will run next week.

We started off talking about the Watson question-answer machine, probably the hottest topic in systems at the moment.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: I was up at IBM Research to see it, and have talked to David Ferrucci, the lead on Watson, a few times, and was obviously very excited about it and somewhat terrified by the idea that this stuff actually works. I saw the medical diagnostics being done by the Columbia University team using Watson, and the Jeopardy! game was one thing, but that really drove it home. I think it is very, very interesting, and I keep thinking that it is a trick, or it shouldn’t work. People went nuts reading about Watson, and everyone is trying to figure out how does it change things. I am hoping it changes things in a good way, but I think there are going to be an awful lot of low-level lawyers eliminated soon as well as people who do the kind of analysis work that, well, they all do here in this room. Some of us may not have their jobs much longer because they can be replaced by a really good expert system.

Tom Rosamilia: I don’t know about job elimination. I think it is really an augmentation for large information bases that are difficult to digest. The medical field is an easy example, and you got to see that. Jeopardy! was somewhat of a contrived scenario in that in most practical scenarios they could be connected to the Internet, and they couldn’t be playing Jeopardy!, and they don’t have to answer a question in three seconds, and they would allow interaction. And so, if Watson only had a 30 percent confidence, maybe you supply some more information and you see what happens as the confidence level goes up. You can actually drill down and see why is Watson so confident, what document caused it to be so confident? And if it is a journal on cardiology, maybe it is a document that a doctor wants to read in addition to coming to the diagnosis he already has. You can actually see the body of evidence that was critical in coming to that recommendation.

The legal aspects of that are a lot more complicated. What is the liability on this? Someone will say, “The medical assistant told me is what it was.” But that is true in so many things.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: That’s true of the current practice of medicine. Anyway, Watson is interesting, but now I want to talk about the IBM i platform.

We got a gauge of how the business was going in the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year. They are all curious about how the IBM i operating system is doing in terms of shipments, upgrades, and what the base looks like. How many people are using OS/400 V5R3, how many are on V5R4? They know V5R4 support is probably going to run out in a year or so. How is the uptake of i 6.1? Do people tend to go in two steps to get to i 7.1, or are they doing it in one fell swoop?

Tom Rosamilia: They did see growth in the operating system as measured by revenue in the fourth quarter last year and in the first quarter this year. I don’t know that I would come to the conclusion that they are seeing a resurgence, but it is certainly a level of renewed interest. They are seeing interest in 5.4 to 6.1 upgrades, and in order to be on Power7, people know they have to be on i 6.1 or higher. People have asked us why they don’t just retrofit 5.4 so they wouldn’t require people to move up, and that’s kind of a mixed story in that the number of things they did in 6.1 was designed to take advantage of the Power7 capabilities. So going there would sort of be a toleration of, not an exploitation of, the Power7 systems. So they need people to move to 6.1 in order to take advantage of the features and functions of the Power7 architecture.

And so they have seen more folks moving. I got a lot of noise on this when I first got to the job last August from my sales team, asking why they can’t just get 5.4 running on Power7. And that noise level has really gone down.

Ian Jarman: They have really transitioned now to almost exclusively selling IBM i 6.1 or 7.1. We’re actually withdrawing marketing of 5.4 coincident with the withdrawal of their last Power6 servers in May. And it is typical in that situation for us, in their normal lifecycle, to support 5.4 for at least another year. They have made no announcement about the end of support for 5.4, but they should expect at least a year after the withdrawal of marketing.

People are really moving to Power7, and when they move to Power7, they want to take advantage of the new capabilities, including integration with external storage. Many of these capabilities rely on 6.1 and 7.1, so there’s a natural progression to these new releases.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: Are people going straight from V5R4 to 7.1, or do they do it in two steps?

Ian Jarman: I would say that the majority so far have been going into 6.1, but it is perfectly possible to go from 5.4 to 7.1. And when I talked with Pete Massiello, the president of COMMON and one of the people who has done a great deal of work upgrading people to these new releases, he said that he is now recommending people go directly to 7.1. So I think we’ll see more of that, and there is no reason you would do a transition to 7.1.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: If you have certified an application to run on 6.1, does it pretty much work on 7.1?

Ian Jarman: Pretty much. As you know, the move from 5.4 to 6.1 required retranslation, and it was a little more complicated than the normal release-to-release upgrade. And that is why all ISVs took great care in that certification. However, in comparison, 6.1 to 7.1 is very simple, and there are no barriers to moving between those releases. Typically, ISVs will certify, and the big ISVs have certified already on 7.1. So there is no barrier to moving to 7.1 and they would expect the push into 7.1 to be much more characteristic of a normal release-to-release upgrade.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: And for the i next release [almost certainly to be called IBM i 8.1], will this be a similar pattern, not another requirement for retranslation?

Tom Rosamilia: They don’t anticipate that.

Ian Jarman: They don’t anticipate any future change like that. Technically, the complication moving from 5.4 to 6.1 was that there were still some very old programs that did not have their observability maintained, and once a program has been on 6.1 or 7.1, that will not be a problem again.

Tom Rosamilia: The other thing that I would tell you is that the data shows, from a systems software perspective including PowerHA, PowerVM, and so on, they have seen a tremendous interest, growing much faster than the underlying hardware as the penetration rates grow. A lot of people don’t have these, and you don’t have to buy a new box to put on PowerHA or PowerVM.

So the systems software has been a great focus for us, and they have a dedicated sales force around this now, which they have never had before. And the growth rates for us in the third quarter, fourth quarter, and now the first quarter of this year have all been in the 30 percent range for the combination of all systems software, including the operating system. That’s AIX, IBM i, PowerHA, and PowerVM.

If you think about it, the operating systems tend to be lowering that, so the growth rates would be even higher if I separated out just PowerVM and PowerHA. In fact, they would be up in the 50 percent range. This is exactly what they are trying to do. They want their clients to understand the value of the systems software that unlocks a lot of the power of Power7. So they have people doing more virtualization and doing high availability, whether it is on IBM i or AIX–it’s all good.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: What’s the penetration for PowerVM and PowerHA? I know that Power Systems has a really good attach rate compared to X64 servers, for instance, especially on the larger Power Systems machines running OS/400 and IBM i. And then the AIX guys kicked it in with lower prices and better functionality. So where’s it at now? What is the typical Power 720 customer doing? Are almost all of them using PowerVM?

Ian Jarman: It varies by the size of the client and the size of the machine, obviously. And it also varies depending on whether you are talking about AIX or IBM i. In the Unix space, between Power5 and Power6, there was a factor of three increase in the adoption of PowerVM. If you look at Power7, on their high-end machines, the adoption of PowerVM is practically 100 percent.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: Which is what it was years ago on big servers running OS/400 and IBM i.

Ian Jarman: Right. The large users of IBM i are all using PowerVM. And when they ask the people here running it on smaller machines like Power 720s and 740s, it is much lower.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: Is it 50 percent? Is it 30 percent? If you look at the industry average for new server sales of all types, it is only 20 percent.

Tom Rosamilia: Not even. And while that number keeps growing, I don’t think their numbers on those classes of machines are much different from what you would find with VMware. It is growing, but there’s a lot left to do. And that is why the software numbers are outpacing the hardware numbers.

[During his keynote at COMMON, Rosamilia cited statistics from McKinsey & Co that said CPU utilization on servers averaged around 5 percent globally a few years ago, and has doubled to 10 percent of total CPU capacity. “If you are in marketing, that’s 100 percent growth, two times,” he said to big laughs. “We’ve got a long way to go.” Obviously, on X64 boxes, which do not have a subsystem architecture in their operating systems like IBM mainframe and OS/400 machines do, you need virtualization hypervisors to take the place of proper workload management so you can drive the utilization on servers up higher. The penetration of hypervisors on Windows machines, which have the worst workload management, should in my estimation eventually exceed that of IBM i and z/OS machines among SMB customers.]

Timothy Prickett Morgan: Are people generally virtualization Power Systems machines to put on multiple IBM i images, or are they adding AIX and Linux to machines to support infrastructure workloads, too? What does the spread look like now?

Ian Jarman: For IBM i clients, it is primarily to have multiple IBM i partitions.

Tom Rosamilia: And there is the same thing around AIX. I don’t know that they have that many heterogeneous AIX and IBM i environments. It is mostly just cranking out 150 or 200 images.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: The IBM mainframe is the exact opposite. You have a lot of sites that have a lot of Linux and a lot of MVS. I meant z/OS–I will never get that right.

Tom Rosamilia: On the mainframe side, they have around 4,000 customers worldwide. About a third of them–about 1,300 of them–have Linux somewhere in their enterprise. The vast majority of them have co-location of zOS and Linux on the mainframe. They actually seeing the emergence of a small group right now–around 30–who only have Linux and do not have any z/OS. They call that an Enterprise Linux Server, and it is starting to grow and they are seeing increased interest based on the kind of work that can run there.

We’re obviously still in this environment–and you have seen us talk about it–where there are certain workloads that just lend themselves to running in certain environments way better than others. I mean that technically and economically. And so their world is one in which one size doesn’t fit all. They really firmly believe they have great X86 offerings, they have great Power-based offerings, and they have great mainframe offerings, and they wouldn’t encourage people to do to a least-common-denominator and just run everything on one system.

The Watson system is a great example of a workload to run on Power. That would not have made a great system to run on z.

Just a second. There was a squinting of eyes. I just want to see what that meant.

Timothy Prickett Morgan: I was just envisioning what size mainframe would be required to run Watson.

Tom Rosamilia: It’s not so much size. The reason for my comment is that the z system has the fastest microprocessor and the fastest uniprocessor performance in the industry. That is not really what they are looking for in the Jeopardy! system. With that system, they wanted to go massively multithreaded, and the fact that they threw 2,880 cores at it and the ability to support four threads per core gave us the ability to chase 10,000 ideas at a time. I wouldn’t run that workload on a mainframe. Mainframes are run for their high I/O rates. This system did no I/O, and it had 15 TB of RAM and the speed between the RAM and the processors is what really gave us the advantage.

End of Part One. Look for Part Two next week.

Cray’s Scaled-Down Systems Scale Up Business

Business is good for Cray. The company has added customers in Japan, Europe and the United States through sales of its midrange systems, the Cray XT5m and XT6m. Those recently-announced systems are generating new business for Cray in academic, weather, life sciences, and government research and development sectors.

According to Barry Bolding, Cray’s vice president of scalable systems,

The Cray XT5m and Cray XT6m systems are industry leaders in terms of compute density and energy efficiency for x86 systems, and their customers — both new and existing — are finding that price and performance efficiency are compelling fits for their needs.

Recent customer wins include the Tokyo-based research organization, the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, which will be installing a Cray XT6m to pursue statistical and mathematical data analysis. In Europe, the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany selected the Cray XT6m to support scientific work in chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering.

The Cray XT6m, announced during SC09, is upgradeable from a Cray XT5m. Cray introduced the midrange systems as scaled down versions of the high-end Cray XT architecture to appeal to more users at a lower price point.

IBM: Their appliance servers smoke Ellison's 'phony baloney' | real questions and Pass4sure dumps

IBM is spoiling for a fight with Oracle, as was abundantly in evidence at Big Blue's recent Investor Day at the company's TJ Watson Research Center north of New York City.

Thank heavens – otherwise server junkies might die of boredom.

IBM doesn't talk as much smack as Oracle does – or Sun Microsystems did - but that doesn't mean the egos of Big Blue's top brass are any smaller than the ones that Scott McNealy or Larry Ellison have displayed over the past several decades.

IBMers might not be billionaires who have made (or in some cases, like Sun's McNealy, lost) impressive fortunes, but they are part of a century-old machine that was kicking data-processing ass - and had the antitrust lawsuits to prove it – before Ellison figured out that if he stuck with Bob Miner, Oracle's other (and deceased) cofounder, he would get fabulously rich. IBM was already riding its third IT phase in the mid-1980s when McNealy saw the genius of the workstation that Andy Bechtolsheim wrought at Stanford and made sure that Bill Joy created excellent software for it.

It never pays to count IBM out, even when the company was flat broke and damned near bankrupt back in the early 1990s, after so many missteps in the mainframe, midrange, and PC businesses. That near-death experience transformed Big Blue and the people now running it - including president, CEO, and chairman Sam Palmisano - who lived through that experience and who now aim to guide the company to its 2015 revenue and profit goals.

After Louis Gerstner was tapped to run IBM in 1993, the company changed from one that proactively decided what was best for customers and wasted a lot of resources creating competing and overlapping products, to one that sells people skills as much as a more-focused portfolio of hardware and software - a portfolio that earns a lot more cash than the IBM of old.

Today's IBM knows which markets it needs to walk away from, and which ones it needs to sprint toward. And while its execution is never perfect, the Gerstner-Palmisano IBM is yielding better results than the Opel-Akers one ever did.

It would be stupid, however, to count Larry Ellison out. Ellison has said that he wants to build integrated systems – and Oracle has the money, time, and software stack to take on IBM from the top down. IBM doesn't have applications, but it does have control over a lot of systems churning a lot of data in a lot of the largest companies in the world.

At the company's recent investors confab, the leaders of IBM's Software and Systems Group tried to explain how Big Blue's efforts on the systems front is different from its competitors, and took pot shots at Oracle because that company, more than HP, is more of a long-term threat to Big Blue's systems hegemony among the largest IT shops.

IBM Research has its sights on Oracle, as well – and if you think that the Watson question-answer machine was just about playing Jeopardy!, then you haven't been paying attention to what people are doing with unstructured data that resides outside of the relational databases that both IBM and Oracle know better than any two companies on the planet.

Rod Adkins, senior vice president in charge of Big Blue's hardware-building Systems and Technology Group (STG), didn't divulge too much about the company's hardware plans for 2011. He did, however, say: "We will be doing a lot more work around pre-tested and pre-integrated capabilities."

Yes, IBMers really do talk like that.

Adkins added that IBM would be shifting from "point-type products" to "integrated solutions," and thus the go-to-market sales teams and the supply chain that both supplies parts for and often assembles these STG products will also have to change.

IBM plans to ship the Power7-based IH nodes used in the "Blue Waters" supercomputer being installed at the University of Illinois in the first half of the year. Updates to the Smart Analytic System appliances, which are based on x64, Power, and mainframe machines (depending on your taste) are also due before the end of June, as are updates to the x64 and Power CloudBurst appliances.

In the second half of the year, IBM will put out a midrange (Business Class as opposed to Enterprise Class) variant of the System zEnterprise 196 – let's call it the System zEnterprise 98 just for fun. Adkins also said that in the second half of this year, Big Blue would roll out a new "flexible form factor for systems," which he unfortunately did not explain very well, I think intentionally. It's hard to guess what he meant, and without more data, we're stuck – it could be just about anything.
